Nick Compton is 60 odd from 1000 runs in May - it hasn't been done since the 80's. Worcestershire offer him the opportunity at New Road. With theories that Somerset are putting all their eggs in the CC1 and possibly T20 basket it is hoped that the poor performance at home in the CB40 on Sunday will not affect the confidence of the young side and we can come away with another maximum point victory
v WORCESTERSHIRE CC1 @ New Road Wednesday 30 May 2012
As people return to the squad from the injury list the competition for places hots up. Poor 40 over performances on Sunday do not help a case when there is someone breathing down your neck and players returning have to hit the ground running to keep their faces in the top eleven. This creates problems for Mr Hildreth, Mr Rose and the rest of the selection committee.
Barrow (opening with Arul), Craig Overton (who has looked good with bat and ball)
That simply leaves one place to fill. Gemaal Hussain would probably be expected to fill it but he was unimpressive in his return at Taunton on Sunday (except for the first couple of balls). His presence will depend on the relative fitness of Craig Meschede and the confidence we have in using both the Overton twins by including James.
Lewis Gregory did not show any real improvement on his poor run of form and Max has not been considered for four day games this half of the season. The rest are still on the not available list so Hussain will probably make the cut.
Comments on this game will be found below and we'll add more as the game goes on. There seems to be no chance of Steve Kirby or Craig Meschede making it to this game and therefore there is even more chance that Gemaal will be the eleventh member of the side. However, it seems that James Overton has recovered from his slight niggle and may pip him to the last place.....
The game started on time and as speculated above Hussain did in fact lose out to Jamie Overton in the final line-up (an indication of how far the twins have come in the space of about a month or how far Gemaal is still off the pace after a very lengthy lay-off perhaps). Worcestershire won the toss and elected to bat.

George Dockrell has not been named for the Irish North v South game on Sunday, despite being in the provisional squads.
Good to see Cricket Ireland take the sensible approach, and recognizing that he is doing far more his devlopment playing (exceptionally well) Div 1 CC than attending that game.

How do we know the comments will be fond? If Sunday is anything to go by and we have a bad day at the office, I suspect they will be considerably less than fond.
New varifocal glasses and not enough time but you are probably right.
If we have a bad first day the world will come to an end just after Somerset cricket goes up in flames as far as 2012 is concerned - forget about 23 December! :-)
I'll sort out the strange textual bits today sometime.
I think I would not rush Kirby back for tomorrow. I'd give him an extra week of building up the quad and netting and bring him back at Lord's next week.
Forecast seems to be bright but showery on day one, then overcast but dry the rest of the way.
Lol
You could be right, but I think a shower or two might hold things up for a while! If we win in 2 days I will disguise my disappointment by helping my wife with some grandson baby-sitting!!
Sounds like AH will be wanting a bit more improvement from our batsmen. He says he thinks last week's Taunton track was so good that either side could/should have made 500 in the Durham game.
I've nothing against Hussein but I hope the team will be unchanged.I've arrived in the Midlands and we are looking forward to being in Worcester for the start.Notwithstanding the "curse of the third innings" I hope we bat first and trust that we shall do considerably better than Leicester did today (199 for 6 in 96 overs!!)
We have had no luck whatsoever this morning. Tight bowling and playing and missing . All boundaries have been edges bar one. Need to stick in here. Tommo is the captain. Hols very quiet.
A big cloud above us. Raining a bit. Trego had massive lb shout last over. We've had 3 shouts turned down already. No lbs in the last game and none here. After barrow kiesy etc in last game I thought these things even out. Obviously not. Nedd to keep plugging away ala last week or it will difficult.
At this rate, excepting perhaps the fact that New Road is a pleasant ground, this first day's play may be joining that at Cardiff yesterday as one that LoL would probably not have enjoyed.
In 1947 Arthur Wellard, aged 47, bowled 1021 overs in 1st Class matches, admitedly a lot of them medium paced off cutters. Perhaps better comparisons are Brian Lobb 812 overs in 1957, Ken Palmer 965 overs in 1961 and Hallam Moseley 661 overs in 1974 plus in Hallam's case all the overs he bowled in the cup competitions and the John Player league.
Angell Face In 1947 Arthur Wellard, aged 47, bowled 1021 overs in 1st Class matches, admitedly a lot of them medium paced off cutters. Perhaps better comparisons are Brian Lobb 812 overs in 1957, Ken Palmer 965 overs in 1961 and Hallam Moseley 661 overs in 1974 plus in Hallam's case all the overs he bowled in the cup competitions and the John Player league.
But it may be more relevant to note that each of those mean were, presumably, used to quite a heavy bowling workload?
Pete has already said that his body is feeling it a little bit. At this rate, he's probably on course to bowl twice as many overs as he has ever bowled before (in a single season)?
Yes, Angell Face, and in 1953 Alec Bedser, who bowled at about the same pace as PT does, bowled 722 overs for Surrey and another 265 in the Ashes series for England.
However, the bodies of the players of that era were conditioned to bowling large numbers of overs. Quite a number of people on here feel that Peter has been under-bowled if anything in previous seasons. So it's not too surprising if he's feeling a bit tired and achy.
Tumbles I'm guessing it's a terribly slow wicket with little in it for the bowlers? Certainly doesn't look like either side will get many bonus points.
Then again we said that last week against Durham.
Well chances/half-chances going down must obviously not be helping.
The Worcs' batsmen have said that it's been swinging around, apparently.
But does sound very slow and game could be similar to last year's although we did get a Tres double-ton last time and he's obviously not here this time.
Can't see anything official on website, but I thought BR had said last week that James would carry on as skipper. He certainly has been doing OK as far as I can see. I wonder whether James has deferred to Alf on his return or has it been taken away and returned to Alf by BR?. I wouldn't have thought James's form has been adversely affected by the responsibility. Could it be a money matter?? More money for captaining and Somerset didn't want to finish up paying for three skippers - Tres James and Alf. I don't know and am just speculating. On balance I can't think it will help team spirit if it has been taken away from James, but IMO OK if it was at James' initiative?
Think the wicket is slow. Two drops just before tea. Solanki both times. One a flashing cut which hildy did well to get a hand to off dockrell. Then dockrell off trgo which he should have taken. Worcester trying to bat is out the game. Doin a good job. Bowles have all tried but lack of firepower is evident. Need a spark from somewhere.
Pete certainly looks strong in those areas where fast bowlers are traditionally said to need to be strong!
As a footnote to the statistics of AV Bedser, he also bowled 55 overs in 3 other first-class matches, including bowling for the Players against the Gentlemen.
I hope no one thought that I was inferring that PT is doing anything other than putting in a bowling performance which is very courageous. I was just interested in the comparisons. I doubted whether those calling for him to be given more overs were on the right track but I'm more than happy to be proved wrong. Let's hope he keeps fit because I can see him having to do a lot more bowling before the season is over.
I am well, thank you Bobstan. I'm hoping to drive up to Worcester tomorrow but it will depend on the weather forecast.
I'm all but sure, Old Boy, that I read that Brian had said that James would continue as captain up until the start of T20, at which point the situation would be "reviewed."
I said then that I suspected that Alf would then be announced as T20 captain, given how well the side did in the CL.
Normally if a player decides to give up the captaincy it's either because his form is rubbish or the team is getting hammered every week? Equally, though, you could say the same about the reason(s) why a player would lose the captaincy against his will?
Maybe James was told in advance that Alf was going to be T20 captain (after the Hants game) and so James told Brian that it would be better if Alf was captain in both formats, so as not to confuse matters?
Either that or there has been a furious reaction to the manner and/or margin of the Hants' defeat. It did rather sound like one of our poorest performances for several years. But, still, surely not sufficient to prompt a change of captain given how well the CC has been going?
I can't believe that we would ditch a captain after one bad team performance. I don't normally speculate on these things because I'm not close to the action but it seems more likely that Alf was given a match without captaincy duties to get him back in the groove and to let him see how the youngsters were performing. This is the sort of issue where it would be useful to have a comment on the official website.
I agree that that would usually seem more likely. But it makes Brian's comment about reviewing it "before the T20," look a bit mystifying unless I have imagined it.
From looking back at old posts, I see that comments to this effect apparently appeared in something called the "Sunday Independent."
I suppose now is "before the T20 starts," but then so was last week. Perhaps Brian never meant immediately before the T20 starts but just at A N Other point before T20?

According to BR in today's Sunday Independent Gemaal almost certain to play, Fonz if they think he is fit enough/recovered from jetlag.
Jos may be ready for the one day match but Kirbs two weeks away and Tres even longer sadly.
Hildy to continue as vice captain but review before T20 starts.
I am not at Worcester, but in the first instance I would not be totally influenced by where the asterisk, denoting a side's captain, appears on the 'Cricinfo' scorecard. Their errors have been numerous in the past.
Secondly, from past experience Thomas certainly likes to direct field - placements when he himself is bowling (as opposed to his captain doing it for him), and this has always been the case.
Even as vice - captain under Marcus, Alf could often be vocal in his calls for changes to the placing of fielders.
I wonder who went out to toss up with the Worcestershire skipper?
I repeat, I am not there and respect the opinions of those who are, but if Alf has taken over the captaincy in a County Championship game, then that would be a mystery to me I am afraid.
Waiting until someone tells us something might be the best policy I suppose. There are many innocent reasons why things are the wy they seem so adding 2 and 2 and coming up with this is some criticism of Hildreth may not be the actual answer.
Here's my summing up of today. We stuck at it but nothing went our way. How that Hughes got to 50 is beyond me. He was nicking it all over the place. Overtones were tidy without being threatening. Alf bowled well in the morning but disappointed me a bit later. Don't know why he is the captain. He's too far away from play. Thought hr looked a bit uninterested if I'm honest but maybe that's just me. Man of the day-PT! Bowled and strove manfully all day.deserved his 2 wickets so much. Worried about his workload though. If there are restrictions on both the twins bowling a certain amount of overs then why not pick hussain leave one of them out and relieve TRego a bit. Horses for courses? Fielding was ok but nothing startling. I overheard tres say that this was how the corresponding game went last year. We have a long job to make the same result happen and suspect WOrcester will want to bat us out of the game. The way they went about it today suggests they might just do it. We have to improve in the morning.
Yeah, Ronnie. I think Kirby is meant to be back next week. If not, with Lord's much more likely than New Road to have pace and bounce, then I suspect Hussain may get his chance.
Not a great Day 1 then. The radio (when they talked about the cricket in front of them) gave the same impression. We weren't lucky and the Pears were.
Maybe Ron is right and we need to rotate the bowlers we have - it must be a bigger briden for the young guys as well. Is Hussain so far off the pace to not be considered?
This is the same issue as last year - a lack of front end penetration. Now Philander has gone we seem to have lost that early edge. Come back Steve we need you. Good run rates from the guys but a load of overs for not much reward. Impressive that they stayed with it though and didn't let Worcestershire get away.
Grockle Waiting until someone tells us something might be the best policy I suppose. There are many innocent reasons why things are the wy they seem so adding 2 and 2 and coming up with this is some criticism of Hildreth may not be the actual answer.
If the Beeb are right about who was captain (I suppose Alf could have tossed up because James was on the khazi?) then it's a little surprising that nothing was said with the squad announcement for this game.
Guys tommo was definitely captain. That is unless hildy was handing him bits of paper with his instructions on it. Don't know why that was but not sure it's for the better of our future cricket. It's roasting here and no air con in hotel. Hope it freshens up for a good nights kip ready for the morrows action!
Ronnie's summing up is pretty spot on.How they got to lunch with all wickets intact wasa miracle for so many balls beat the bat. Alf led the team out every time and JH was usually last out but the body language was fine. Pete was magnificent and no body gave up.Dockrell's chance was more than a half chance but James' really wasn't a proper chance at all.
The outfield is slow and we did well to keep them below 350. Some of the LBW shouts looked very promising. What worries me is that we have to take 6 wickets in 14 overs for full points.I~ think we stand more chance of that than do Worcester of scoring 130 in 14 for full batting points.
And... the cake in the ladies pavillion at tea time was as good as ever
We saw the disadvantage today of the retrictions on the number of overs two of our bowlers are allowed in one day.
All five bowlers used before lucnh were totally excellent on an unresponsive wicket. As ronnie s has said, the 50 from Phil Hughes must have the least impressive by any championship batsman this season - it was easy to see why he has fallen out of favour with the Aussie selectors.
After lunch, with Peter again putting in a trojan effort, we continued to bowl with accuracy and spirit. But around about the tea interval and beyond, both the Overton twins suddenly tired and Solanki, who earlier had been beaten by the best ball of the day by Jove, began to look far more assured.
We will need to work out just how we are going to `manage` the Overtons, in view not just of the bowling restrictions because of their age, but also their unfamiliarity with long days in the field.

I would agree with Ronnie, Geordie M and others who have posted from here at Worcester today. Tough day with very little luck (like the top edges) falling Somerset's way.
One thing I would add - Alf was doing a lot of stretching in the field today. I think all this Championship cricket has been a bit of a shock to the system after his relative IPL inactivity. He's going to have to catch up quickly if he's taken over the captaincy until Marcus is fit again.
Hildreth stood up as captain when Tres was injured. I believe he has done a very good job, particularly considering the rapidly diminishing squad due to injury and having to bring together a bunch of youngsters into a cohesive team - not to mention the teenage bowling restrictions. I suspect he may be a little relieved to be passing the baton on to Alf.
Good question mike. What will we do? I suspect all the bowling is affecting his batting too. Really need to watch what we do with him. Suspect they are trying to get to the. T20 and then a month of bowling about 40 overs or so will help him recover. Then hopefully kirbs, dibble etc will be back to bowl unrestricted overs in the day.
With restricted bowlers all around him, the youngsters and suggestions that Alf is not at full pace yet, the burden does fall on him.
Even if Kirby does return before the T20, he probably won't be fully ready to start. He'll just get up to speed and find himself sitting out games again - not sure how much of a bonus he will be in the T20 when he isn't at full throttle and has just returned from extensive injury

Yes, Grockle. I do not think that I would want to risk Steve too much in T20.
It's a huge shame that Adam Dibble is unlikely to be ready for it, given his performances in the CL. Would probably have been ideal to play him instead of Steve.
Just logged on. What has happened? Swinging around corners this morning? Change in pitch conditions?
I would say have we just bowled well, but then we did that yesterday? or has it simply been that the luck has turned and now they are nicking everything?
Surely would need either a ridiculous last wicket stand or 200 run opening stand by Arul/Alex? (or rain, I guess)
Having read Nick's column in the Cricket Paper, I'd say he will be extremely nervous and I would not want to be batting with him because I think the running between the wickets may be even more "eccentric," than usual.
The Cricinfo County Cricket blog have said that the Worcester ground staff have been primed for action all morning as there is a constant threat of rain, so it is possible he may not get to bat.
Frome Exile Another magnificent effort from the mighty BoBo!
He's not bad for a third change seamer, is he?!
All of this does rather make one wonder what will happen if we ever do get to the point this season when all of the bowlers are fit?
There does not appear to a be a very persuasive case for taking Pete away from new ball duties at any point this season? Kirby, although excellent overall, did not do that much with the new ball last season. Alf seems to prefer to bowl first-change (and will be in charge for the forseeable) and Hussain isn't yet proven as a Div ONe bowler.
So, Pete should presumably continue with the new ball all season?
Now we need to try and keep them in the field for as long as humanly possible so that they are mentally tired and (hopefully) in signficant arrears when their second dig starts.
Stunning morning here at new road. And I'm not talking about the weather. Ball moving around under cloud cover. Trego brilliant again and a bit of luck too. Word of caution. It will be difficult to bat here and anything up their score will be a great effort. Rain around the place too,but it has missed us all morning.
Thanks, Ronnie, let's hope the clouds lift a bit, then.
Even if we end up in deficit - even possibly quite a large one- we'll still be in with a shout, I believe, simply because Worcestershire are used to losing (far) more often than not - so confidence and killer instinct are likely to be absent.
Excellent. All the lack of luck yesterday seems to have appeared this morning.
What another stupendous effort from the man of the season so far Peter Trego (I haven't forgotten Nick) - I agree about the new ball - he does seem to have something and we did suffer last year from a lack of 'it' whatever 'it' was?
Thanks for the update Ronnie - it's been cold and cloudy here in BS3 this morning but has now got warmer and clearer. Lets hope it's doing the same where you are.
Missed this on the cricinfo blog this morning, sounds like Pete was fired up!
Peter Trego got himself into a lather when he thought he'd got Vikram Solanki leg before on his overnight score of 82. The appeal was turned down and after fixing the batsman with a long stare not once but twice it took a conversation with umpire Trevor Jesty to calm him down.
Worcestershire have lost a couple more wickets, Trego taking a decent catch at second slip off Trego to remove Cameron and then trapping Matt Pardoe in front.
Even more super human it seems he not only was bowling but in the slips simultaneously. Is there no end to this man's talent?
These are pretty much the same conditions that Compton has got most of his 941 runs (before today) this season, even down to the early wickets at the other end.
Yeah perhaps the only positive is he'll play with freedom tomorrow. He was on Sky a moment ago saying if they get back out he'll really go for it. Rather in a way he stayed in the same mode he's batted all season than get caught at long off for 30 something.
Just returned from an enjoyable 2 days at Worcester.
As i understand it the change of captain was the choice of James, it was not a case of being replaced or removed.
Hopefully this isnt a longer term choice as i think he is/was the obviouse long term candidate as Alfie nor Tres are going to be around all that much longer (35 and 36 respectively)
James certainly didnt seem adversely effected during the 2 days, he was encouraging the bowlers, chatting to everyone and seemed his normal self, and took a good sharp catch today off GD to remove Andrew during the morning session.
Tremendous effort by the sounds of it. Huge respect for that effort by Pete Trego. Hope he gets chance to rest before he needs to bat.
Unlucky for Nick, but I'm sure he will be focussed on getting a ton anyway, (as well as trying even harder to get 1000 before the end of May next year !).
Worcs in recent years have employed policy of trying to get 4 or 5 wins to stay up, hence they go for results.
I think they could well be up for setting a target on Saturday seeing how game is poised tomorrow evening.
And i hope in turn we wilkl take up a decent chase too.
We will not win this thing with 12 draws, i think we have to be brave, 16pts is a huge reward, and with respect we shouldnt be worrying about Worcs getting them should we try and fail.
I thought Surrey were awful the other week in giving up at the target they had at the Oval, opportunities to win are not there every match, if you can get a chance you need to go for it i feel, he who dares.......
Splendid day, what there was of it.Trego awesome again. His conversation with ump looked good natured. It involved some pretend batting to try to understand the decision.Sorry for Nick but we'll see what tomorrow brings. I hope for an interesting Saturday but Worcester scored so slowly that they have taken a lot of time out of the game. We will have to sacrifice batting points to get a result, with agreement.300-350 on saturday would make a good chase. We are 313 behind. Score 200 tomorrow in 55 overs. Worcester bat for 40 overs , start 100 ahead and end up 300 ahead after 10 overs on day 4. We have 80 overs to go for 300. They have 80 overs for 10 wickets. Gives PT time to play a winning knock!!
As has been said gamble the draw for a win
Agree with wsm fan and gm. We won't catch Warks and Notts with draws, even though we have a bonus points advantage. But I would be inclined to bat normally today until mid-afternoon and see where that leaves us. We don't want to end up bowled out quickly miles behind.
Nick Compton was particularly unlucky in two ways yesterday afternoon. Worcester was the only one of the seven first-class grounds with matches where it was raining, and it was the sort of mizzle that almost certainly wouldn`t have seen the umpires go off if it had been a one-day game.
Martin Bodenham, who is standing at Worcester, is particularly known for keeping the players on if at all possible in limited over matches.
If Nick had joined the rarified list of eight players who have scored 1,000 runs before the end of May, he would have been the only non-Test player to have done so.
Perhaps in a year or so, he will have qualified on both fronts!
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2012:06:01:09:22:09 by cricketjerry-mouse.
I won't be thee today but hopefully batting will be a little easier today. Compo would have found it really difficult to get those runs yesterday. If we can get to near there score we can skittle them like last year. Need to be careful not to get bowled out cheaply. One other piece of news I heard yesterday is that both Somerset and Worcester appear to have secured games v the Aussies next summer. He was extremely chuffed. Don't know what length but he did say 4 dayers but I may have picked him up wrongly.
Given how difficult batting was yesterday, then I rather think the first thought should be saving the follow-on, rather than worrying about some kind of contrived run-chase later on? (should that become necessary.)
My view is that if we get within 70-80 runs of their total, then Worcs will probably fold in their second innings and we shall probably win the game anyway.
Neither is a team of the calibre of the Durham team that won back to back titles - not even close, IMO.
Notts, especially, may prove vulnerable in the second half of the season as they do not really have a spinner worthy of the name (sorry, Samit.)
In such a long season, all it could take is one bad result (affecting confidence) or a loss of form of one or two key men for either of those sides and we may find that we can indeed close down the gap on them, without resorting to gambles in the first half of the season.
Yes, Tumbles - I think all the earlier talk about declarations and run chases is probably a bit premature. We may still be able to get to a fourth innings chase via the 'natural' method.
A bit disrespectfull to Worcs I would say. We need to grt close as we can and see where it goes.
If we get a run chase then Kieswetter has got to come to the party. I am quite disappointed with his batting save for 2 innings this season.if he wants England as badly as he says he does he wont do it this way.
I'm not sure he's as in the frame as you seem to think AG.
KP taking over must have said something and there is no reason why the ECB might not go with someone else and bring in a batting keeper other than Craig. Names come to mind who are in the England view presently.
My understanding, based on what I have read is simply that keeping KP happy was considered crucial and so Flower moved KP up to open in an attempt to maintain KP's interest in 50 over cricket. So may not directly reflect on Craig K.
Great to hear the New Road crowd giving him such a good round of applause too.
Commentators are talking rot though - a "struggling Somerset side". Do they not realise we could have won nearly every Championship match we've played this season?!?!
Good to see Jos getting some well needed runs. All we need is a Trego 150 off 15 balls Special after tea and we'll bowl them out for 60 tomorrow morning.
Looking at Trego's 1st innings bowling analysis, bearing in mind that he got 4 of the top 6 batsmen and his economy rate, that must be the best individual performance of our season so far. (He will, of course, better it in Worcs second innings!)
Looking at where we've got to now (200-4) I would bat on. We have to commit to getting a lead and bowling them out quickly in the 2nd inns. That looks like the best chance of victory, wouldn't people say?
Chinaman Looking at where we've got to now (200-4) I would bat on. We have to commit to getting a lead and bowling them out quickly in the 2nd inns. That looks like the best chance of victory, wouldn't people say?
Absolutely.
Worcestershire are used to losing. If it's close on first innings totals and if it's dry for the rest of the game, then I expect SCCC to prevail.
If we are to win the Championship, we have to take chances. Playing it safe on the premise of ensuring we don't lose won't do it. Remember the Kent match a couple of years ago ?
We have the talent, flair & determination (hopefully) to win it, so if we lose one or two along the way so be it.
Good to see the Worcester crowd giving a generous reception to Nick`s 1,000th run.
They did exactly the same three or four years back when Justin Langer passed Don Bradman`s record as the leading Australian run-getter of all time.
Believe it or not, a large contingent of the Don Bradman Appreciation Society travelled to New Road that day especially for the occasion. I met one who had come all the way from Australia.

A good day to be at Worcester. We have had 208 overs instead of 288 so that's the best part of a day lost. Excellent knock from Nick on a difficult day and a good innings from Jos, spoiled by a churlish refusal to acknowledge a very good ovation from the crowd as he left the pitch.
So, where does tomorrow go,in the 96 overs left. We are 63 behind. If there is no agreement then probably a draw. If we bat on to 300 (if we can) we shall take 10 overs out of the day and still be 40 behind. Worcester can't bat quickly enough to set us a target that they could bowl us out in so the only chance is to rip them out ala Durham in 40 overs and chase 200 at 4.
and irrespective of the date it was gloomy at 5.00
Arrived late due to a puncture! Unfortunately our arrival at the pay gate coincided with cheers as James was lbw, and more immediate hoots as CK apparently went first ball. We then proceeded to watch wonderful knocks by initially JOS and then NICK carrying the innings forward. I didn't notice whether JOS acknowledged the applause as he went off, but I feel he isn't the sort of lad to ignore it. He didn't seem particularly upset when he was out after a very good innings.
Nice to meet the 'grockle' crowd along with the SCCC president and his entourage!
I was impressed with the Worcester crowd's warm and generous applause for the various good things achieved by the SCCC players.
I would hope that Alf declares immediately in the morning and backs himself and his other bowlers to bowl out Worcs leaving a gettable target for the late afternoon!
Well if you bat on for the extra point surely you have to make sure you get it. Seems pointless to me. Unless we can skittle them quickly it looks like 7 points. You can get more in a game and lose it.
Not able to get down today but the prospect of a full days play seems remote. I assume no agreement has been reached and it will take exceptional bowling to win it from here.
Wickham AG: Cove dropped what was apparently a fairly comfortable catch at second slip off the first ball of the innings, bowled by PT.
So Craig dropped an easy catch!!
Hands ANY cricketer who has NEVER dropped an easy catch!!
Lets not destroy the lad's confidence. This afternoon he may get his revenge and run througfh the lot of them!
Duck your heads!! MAX would be useful this afternon!!!
No surprise at all to see George running through them.
Question is will the light hold off long enough to allow us to knock off whatever they leave us? Said yesterday morning that I expected to win if we got within 70-80 of them on first dig.
Re:James - if he voluntarily surrendered the leadership then does that suggest that Pete maybe our best bet, long-term?
So far the captaincy issue has not been mentioned by the club at all to my knowledge since the start of this match, hopefully Brian will shed some light on things in his column tomorrow.
Move this forward 11 days, we play Warwickshire at Taunton STARTING at 5.40, so conceivably finishing around 8.30/40 if it goes to the wire.
There is absolutely no chance in the world that even if it was pitch black they would contemplate going off for light before the end.
With what 7000/8000 mostly paying spectators, all eating, drinking and spending money they will play in any light, and quite often light drizzle even.
I appreciate the red ball may be slightly harder to pick up in gloomy light but it will be a totally different case for 20-20 and the crowd and money that comes with it.
How dangerous is it facing Arul and George, i may be wrong but isnt the issue physical danger? bad light itself isnt the problem its the danger it poses (or not) for the batters and fielders???
One of you guys always seem to come up with the answer.
What is the official position ref light??
Are there strict rules laid down and umpires are not allowed to deviate from them? Do they have any discretion? Are they allowed to use their commonsense?
If their hands are tied then they shouldn't be criticised!
If they have discretion they should be sacked or demoted to the twelth ladder of the cricket pyramid. I think Bodenham used to be a football referee and Jesty should know better!
Play with a bloody luminous yellow ball if you have to!
There's also an obvious issue of an uneven playing field in the CC with the Test match counties (apart from Middx) being able to simply put the floodlights on to avoid coming off for bad light.
The decision is one for the umpires alone to make.
3.3.3 Suspension of play for adverse conditions of ground,
weather or light
a All references to ground include the pitch. See Law 7.1
(Area of pitch).
b If at any time the umpires together agree that the
conditions of ground, weather or light are so bad that
there is obvious and foreseeable risk to the safety of
any player or umpire, so that it would be unreasonable
or dangerous for play to take place, then they shall
immediately suspend play, or not allow play to
commence or to restart. The decision as to whether
conditions are so bad as to warrant such action is one
for the umpires alone to make.
c When there is a suspension of play it is the
responsibility of the umpires to monitor the conditions.
They shall make inspections as often as appropriate,
unaccompanied by any of the players or officials.
Immediately the umpires together agree that conditions
are suitable for play they shall call upon the players to
resume the game.
3.3.4 Floodlights
At matches where the home authority has confirmed
prior to the commencement of the competition that
floodlights are available for all days of all matches at that
venue, if in the opinion of the Umpires, natural light has
deteriorated to an unsuitable level, they may authorise
the home authority to turn on the floodlights so that the
match can continue in acceptable conditions.
Be a little careful chaps - not just the bowlers " propel " the ball - if the batsman wallops it towards a fielder who cannot see it coming clearly then he could be injured. Same applies to snicks to the slips which take your face out before you see them.
Just a devils advocate view to think about !
I was talking to a neutral at the Oval the other week and he said the light when Somerset batted on the Friday evening was farcical and should never have been allowed, especially when they came back on when it was dangerous, Philander was hit badly on the hand. And he was a paying member of the public with no bias to either team. Do things even out?
I used to jokingly refer to the curse of Jesty, when anything bad happened to Somerset CC, batting collapses, wayward bowling, unlucky string of LBWs, as being down to him being at one of the ends. This followed on from his days as a player when he always managed to score runs. Of course it was a bit of fun but a work colleague did find on several occasions (this was when we were in Div 2 and dire) that there was some truth to it.
Clarence Parker A risk to safety, it appears to be!

Thanks CP. On the ball as usual!
Just one more point!
Do the authorities indicate how the umpires should judge the light? I presume they no longer use light meters, or the lights which use to appear somewhere when light got bad?
That's my understanding Mike and one would think that that reading tends to relate to the amount of light rather than some vagues and ambiguous opinion of a man in a white coat.
One would assume the days of umpires simply making arbitrary decisions has gone to some extent so I think in this case you probably need to blame the guidance on readings that I assume the umpires refer to.
I doubt the batsmen were the people they were worried about though 2 in the afternoon with spinners on suggest the light must have been particularly awful or the guidance needs revising.
My understanding was always that the umpires make a subjective opinion that it is too dangerous, and only then take a measurement using the light meter. That measure then becomes the standard for the rest of the game, if it above that level they play if it isn't they go off.
I'm almost certain that is how it works in Test Cricket, so I assume it is the same at FC level.

So, as I thought - no discretion and no commonsense. Why bother with humans - have a couple of lego men as umpires - press the button and away we go. The paying public have no input - takes us back to the stupid Morgan Report!
My initial impression yesterday when they went off for bad light was that the light was even worse at 3pm when it was drizzling with much darker clouds overhead. If the umpires had taken a reading then (after stopping play) perhaps play would have carried on.
However, after chatting with Nick at the end of play, he disagreed and said that it was worse at 5pm. He said that he did not see the ball that dismissed him very well. Also there had been an on-going dialogue with the umpires about the light beforehand.
Hindsight would suggest that if they had gone off before Nick was bowled, the chances of getting 4 or 5 batting bonus points would have been greatly increased
We lost to Notts in the title race on the split tie rules 2 years ago. Let us hope we do not miss out by 1 or 2 points in the title race this year!!!
It surely can't be a subjective issue. If it was why provide the umpires with light meters at all? There must be some level of light that is acceptable and some level of light that is not and the meter provides that information. As I said earlier, if you want to blame anything, blame the boundaries provided by those meters within which the umpires make their decisions.
To infer that the umpires in this game had some kind of agenda other than playing cricket on the information provided is a little unfair to the officials.
A bit of frustration at having another fixture decided by the elements rather than a deep seated belief that these two officials did an unprofessional job of handling this match to our detriment (?) perhaps?
Never mind the umpires, they were probably just doing their job as best they could. I agree with Grockle, it was the weather what got us (as per usual).
Nevertheless, a solid performance, continuing a good series in the four-day stuff. May it continue.
I was only half-joking yesterday when I suggested a bright coloured ball to help enable play to continue.
Can't they get some non-chip paint and apply a luminous colour?
You'd need a selection of balls of diffferent ages, obviously, so academy and second XI players would have to spend time in the nets with the bowling machine facing 60 balls with ball one, 120 with ball two, 240 with ball four etc so that you'd have a luminous ball that could replace a red one during poor light without introducing a new ball.
It shouldn't be on the wit of cricket ball manufacturers to produce something?
Worcs were collapsing to George, only for bad light to rescue them. When play finally resumed the pressure on them had been greatly reduced.
They are brittle, psychologically, and lose most of their CC games. I think they'd have folded from 60 odd for 4. Without Alan Richardson, I think we would probably have knocked the runs off.
However as you rightly say on the other thread, as unlucky as we have been with our own injuries, we have been fortunate in facing some significantly weakened opponents. No Woakes or Rankin for Warks. No Onions for Durham in 2nd game. No Adams for Notts. No Richardson for Worcs.
Can't really properly debate this because nobody will ever know! I'd have hoped we could have chased 250 to win but we were never really on the front foot in this match so...
Something for us to work on, getting a better start. We didn't take a wicket in the first session in either of our last 2 games.
To add to the other point, looks like no Finn on Tuesday!
It would be farcical if umpires did not consult a light meter BEFORE going off for bad light.
A person's eyes alter with the level of ambient light (the iris opens/closes) so making a judgement of light is at best judgemental. Ask any photographer (eg:MikeTA1) and they will tell you that the light can alter by around 2/3 stops and the average person will barely notice the differnce!!
Surely to goodness they should be given a light meter reading which is the trigger for all umpires on all grounds for the decision on bad light.
Think you are right LB this game was never really there to win when they got the start they got. One of the 5Live guys said we need one of the experienced men to be back with the Overton's so that they aren't bowling with each other and working with them off the pitch to show them how to stay match sharp as the tiredness and pressure mounts.
We are missing Steve in that light on the pitch because ALf hasn't been here and is probably starting from scratch with the boys while I would assume Sk has been with them fromt he start of the season, off the pitch if not on it.
