Early Morning Sunday Cricket!! Durham 50

By Grockle et al
July 27 2014

There's something about sunny Sundays and cricket in Taunton.  At the start of the 50 over competition of 2014 the town is its own sleepy self with smallish crowds waiting at 9 o'clock for the gates to open.  But there are worse places to be.  The predicited 4/5000 spectators are certainly NOT making the early journey into the centre but it's a healthy 'smattering' that will greet the sides in about half an hour.

v DURHAM 50 @ Taunton Sunday 27 July 2014

Commentary

TUNEIN APP BBC LIVE EVENT NUMBER 8

Sunday cricket, how I miss it.  A fresh weekend morning, cup of coffee, first look at the wicket and players warming up under the sun.  Can't really beat it.  Though 9 in the morning and 50 overs oer side I'm not sure about to be honest.  Nevertheless it is another competition we have a chance in and that also adds a little frisson to Durham's arrival for the first game.

Marcus returns to the captaincy, though we are yet to know whether he keeps the gloves.  There is little of the razzamataz involved with the 20 over version so we don't get the on field mikes at the toss etc so we are presently waiting for all that.

The side is

Trecothick, Compton, Trego, Ingram, Hildreth, Barrow(w), Gregory, Overton C, Thomas, Groenewald, Dockrell with Jack Leach as 12th man.

So, the skipper has given up the gloves as expected, Compo has retained his new short format opening role, Craig Meschede has been left out, Jamie Overton has yet to convince the selectors that he is ready to return and Leach hasn't broken in yet.

Durham have won the toss and will bat.

An on time start with Alf starting from the OP and Lewis from the River against the Durham one day captain Stoneman and the dangerous Mustard. It's quiet for 12 balls as Thommo gives away 3 and Gregory lets them add another 2. The first boundary comes just before the first wicket as Stoneman drives a low one too close to George who takes the catch.  Lewis has his first at 11 and a good start as Calum MacLeod replaces his captain.

Mustard looks to push it on but the two opening bowlers are operating disciplined lines and it is difficult to get it away.  Tim Groenewald is introduced at the OP for over 7 and his third ball has MacLoed pushing tentatively at a slightly leg side one which goes sharply but low to Colin Ingram who simply picks the ball up before it bounces and Durham find themselves at 25 for 2 before the end of the 7th over.

Out comes Borthwick to partner Mustard against some very sharp bowling from Gregory in particular.  The crowd is filling up all the time and has probably reached close to 3000 after about a half hour.  The new entrants get to see the third Durham wicket as Mustard calls Borthwick through for a quick single off TG, he hesitates and Gregory is in quickly, sends the ball arrowing into Barrow who breaks the stumps with the Durham man not in his ground.  36 for 3 is not where the visitors want to be.

Colly starts to get the Durham house in order from here on but the two Somerset men keep their foot on the throat.  It's the introduction of George that, unexpectedly, loosend the leash a little.  His first from the OP (17th) goes for 10 but then the Durham men seem to take a liking and in the 23rd Collingwood takes him for 17.  Cove is the lther part of the change, coming on for the 16th and he makes the next breakthrough having Mustard caught behind for 40 in the 24th just after the visitors went to 100 with a six off the Irishman. 109 for 4 sees Jennings come in to partner LoL's favourite ex-international as we pass halfway with 'Nelson' on the board.

We then seem to lose the plot I am afraid.  Besides still using George, who went for 54 off his first 7, they seem to have no real answer to Collingwood's particular brand of one day batting and he starts to move the score along at a much faster pace. When the 150 arrives in the 32nd we have run out of ideas it seems.  Marcus uses bowlers in one over spells for all of the overs from 31 to 40; Pete from the OP, Alf, George, Tim, Lewis, Alf, Tim, Lewis, Alf, Craig. It doesn't stop Colly going to 50 off 49 balls, or a 100 partnership between him and Jennings off 14.3 overs.

Finally Jennings is caught in the deep by Dockrell off the bowling of Alfonso in the 39th for 45 at 212 and Collingwood goes to an excellent 100 off the next ball (83balls, 10 fours and 3 sixes). 214 looks a hell of a lot better for Durham with 10 overs to go.

But if Marcus had no real team bowling answer to Colly, he certainly has a personal answer as he simply picks a well hit drive from the man out of the air as if it was nothing to send him on his way at 237.  Excellent fighting ton by the ex England man and a piece of fielding excellence by his ex Ashes colleague to dismiss him.

Durham move over 250 in the 44th as Muchall and Hastings try to get their side to 300 or more, something that looked extremly unlikely after 15.  They need 44 off 6 and look well capable of getting them and more.

At 257 we get another piece of luck as Hastings chips a high full toss straight into George's hands.  The 300 may not be looming, then again given the poor quality of our bowling after the Hastings dismissal it would not be surprising.  In the 47th we see three boundaries to almost the same spot on the fence as Lewis gets his line horribly wrong. 300 does arrive in the 49th courtesy of another Lewis full toss to...wait for it  GARETH BREESE. I would like to point out that LG hasn't been the poorest bowler at all.

Last over at 303, bowled by Thomas. The field is extraordinary with  a ring of 5 on the off side halfway to the boundary and four fielders spaced around the legside boundary.  No pressure on the Durham pair at all really and they finish on 311 for 7.

They have a decent total, we gave them about 75 runs of it and ourselves a mich harder afternoon than it really should be.

The Reply

Gets off to a bad start against Rushworth and Onions as Marcus never really looked anything like comfortable with one very streaky four to his name before he is ajudged LBW to Onions.  Then we have a struggle to get the ball off the cut strip for 13 balls before Nick feathers a Rushworth ball to Mustard behind. 12 for 1 becomes 17 for 2 and after 5 overs we have staggered to 19 and look unlikely to pass 200 let alone 3.

It is time for an inspiring Ingram Trego partnership to get this match back on some kind of competitive track.  But that isn't to be, as the man who should be at the Rosebowl gets one to move away beautifully and Pete is on his way back for 3 caught behind at 22.  An early finish looks very very possible as James Hildreth strides out with no record this year for getting the advantage back in games that are getting away from the county.

By the 10th over we have moved on to 43 against Onions and Rushworth and the 50 comes up halfway through the 11th by then Collingwood has taken over at the OP and Onions is about to step away in favour of Hastings.

With considerable rebuilding to do, Colin Ingram and James Hildreth start to reconstruct the Somerset innings.  Ingram seems to be a confident, no nonsense batsman who accumulates while waiting for the bad ball.  He's not afraid to hook or pull but will keep on putting the scoreboard to work if those types of runs are not available.  Hildreth we know much more about but I doubt anyone watches the man with confidence that he will hold it together.  We all know however how good he can be and pray this is the day he WILL get it sorted.

By the 15th over we have moved on to 68,  not exactly streaking along but we don't really have to.  The 50 partnership comes in the 16th at 71 and prompts the introduction of Breese from the River. The Somerset men reset and continue to push the score along with singles and twos mostly and reach 97 by the 20th with the 100 coming halfway through  the 21st.

Just as you think Hildreth is out of his own personal danger zone, it is Ingram who fails, looking to sweep Breese, he is ajudged 'stumped' at 103 and holds the kneeling pose for quite a while before trudging off, unusual decision but it is 103 for 4 however you want to look at it.  Alex Barrow leaves the question marks over his first team quality as he comes in, fails to trouble the scorers and is caught behind off Rushworth at 106.  Is he up to this?  The jury is still in conversation I would say.  Lewis Gregory replaces him at the crease.

Hildreth passes his 50 at 113 just before the halfway stage (67 balls with 5 fours) and he has worked hard for it. At the 25 over mark we are still ahead of the rate at 114 v 111 but we have one less wicket left. Durham look to stem the tide by re-introducing Onions from the OP but the change of ends does not seem to work for him as James produces the first six of the innings into the Ondaatje almost immediately.  The bowling is also changed at the River end with Borthwick taking over the workload there.

Before we reach 30 overs, Somerset pass 150 and Gregory gets into the act of removing Onions from the attack as he takes another maximum boundary off him to add to a four in the same over. The 50 partnership between these two also arrives at 156.  This effectively takes Onions out as he is replaced by Jennings as Somerset move to 196 fof 5 at 35 and take the 'dangerous' batting powerplay!!

The 200 comes up at 35.3 overs before the momentous 37th over where the 100 partnership comes up at 36.1 (at 10 an over for the second 50).  Lewis then goes to 50 off 40 balls with 4 fours and a six at 36.2 with a boundary and then James hits his ton with a square drive off 104 balls with 10 fours and a six to the same place as Lewis. These two have started to put the hammer down a little as their work also starts to produce some dropping heads on the opposition side.  However good this is though, it is not over yet by any means.

But from then on in it is a procession of shot after shot from both men.  James plays the second fiddle for the last part allowing Lewis to not only score his highest List A score but make that into 3 figures AND win the game with 3 successive boundaries to go from 93 to 105 and take us over the line with 20 balls to spare.  The highest List A partnership against Durham and the highest 6th wicket List A partnership ever of 209.

The boys won it almost on their own.  Good day after a bad start and we move on with, hopefully, middle order confidence.

Congratulations to our very own WJD on scoring the first century in the competition.

Poor old Middlesex seem totally shell shocked at Cardiff after yesterday evening's defeat at Taunton.

The Chief is expecting 4000+ at Taunton tomorrow. The press presence last night were not so optimistic and seemed to think this competition was going to be a 'damp squib'

Mr Nash tweeted that as of Friday we had presold 4500 tickets for Sunday!
I would never disbelieve our Chairman, BUT..... I'd be amazed if we have sold 4500 tickets to general public?
I think more likely is we have sold about 1000, and Mr Chairman is adding a generous estimate of our membership on top of that to get to 4000!

I'd be shocked if we even sold 4500 for T20's in advance?
If our seated capacity is 7,100 i'm guessing we have a big chunk of platinum and platinum plus members so not sure we'd have scope to sell 4500 to public?

I agree with press, I think crowds will be way down on 40 over stuff last year.

Tomorrow may be better given nice weather and our recent lack of Taunton cricket. But the midweek ones I think may struggle to make 4 figures.

The T20 crowd will not be interested, no music, far less excitement in runs and wickets. 50 overs is a LONG LONG time to sit and watch, its 3h30m per innings with a 45 minute break, so 10.30am start will mean scheduled 6.15pm finish.

At 10.30 I think it'll be very sparse, by 12/1/2pm it should fill up but can't see it even getting half full I'm afraid.

If Mr Nash is correct and we get over 5000 i'll happily eat my words.....

Three quarter empty stadium at best for the Lancs / Yorks derby does not bode well for this tournament

Saturday crowds are always poor, even we struggle.

Holidays, shopping, family stuff, club cricketers, pre season footy freindlies, so many reasons why people don't/wont watch on a Saturday

There are never a very big crowd for the longer format (40/50 overs) it normally does increase as the competition progress.

Im bringing 2 guest so that's 5003!

Squad of 14
tres, alex, compo, George, lewis, tim g, hildy, colin, jones, leach, cove, jove, alfie, tregs

I reckon Jones, Leach and Jobe to miss out

So, tres, compo, tregs, ingram, hildy, alex (wk), lewis, cove, tim g, alfie, George

only gives us 6 bowlers but should be ok, think alex will keep as 50 overs doing it every few days is a hard ask of our skipper.

No second spinner (unless Ingram does something). Leach 12th man. Barrow in with the gloves. Compo opening with MT. Full side on front page.

Certainly NOT 4500 here for the start.

Durham won the toss and will bat in front of about 1000ish.

I'm also keen to see Leach get some cricket, full stop.

Why on earth are we starting so early? If I remember rightly 50 over cricket used to start at 12:30 or 1pm?

The Hants game is starting at 2 so it can't be a case of needing to start at 10:30 to get the game in?

If we get dewy mornings then these very early starts will just be yet another part of the format of cricket in this country that mitigates against spinners!

Where do they expect (or even hope) to get another Swann from?

We've let them back in this one a bit as Colly goes past 80.

Marcus has used Pete for the 30th, Alf for 31, Dockers for 32 (who is getting murdered - first 7 went for 54), Tim for 33, Lewis for 34, Alf for 35 and back to Tim for 36.

No present answer as they approach 200.

Well if this is any kind of portent of things to come in 50 over cricket then it sounds as though Mr Nosworthy will have us progressively further away from the line in 50 over cricket this season compared to last, as has already been the case in T20.

What's the story of the track, Grockle?

The two scorecards so far might imply that it's lively with the new ball, then flat?

If so, we may still be in with an outside shout, albeit that there isn't a lot of experienced one-day batting in the hutch, unless we count Alf and TG.

Nothing to do with the track I'm afraid. They have bowled better than we did. We got a bit this morning to help us but then just let it slide. Durham simply haven't and we'll lose this one by about the amount we gifted them unless Hildreth decides to be inspired today.

Our batsmen are the only ones who can win this for us, our bowlers gave it away through poor consistency.

One thing to mention about the pace of this pitch if it is of any help is that on three different occasions today against three different bowlers, the slow ball has been so obvious that batsmen have had time to check their intended stroke and improvise something else.

Hilda 146 off 134 balls with 13 fours and 3 sixes

Lewis 105 off 71 balls with 13 fours and a six

The highest List A Somerset partnership against Durham for any wicket beating Tres and Justin at CLS.

A standing ovation for Lewis, a Man of the Match award without doubt for James to come and the first two points in the bag.

How many were here? Don't care. Those that were got their money's worth of pain, anguish, enjoyment and victorious satisfaction in the end - if they were locals.

Sounds churlish to say (but at least it's being said after a win) but we can still improve a lot as a team in one-day cricket based on today.

We crossed the line thanks to an amazing partnership, but I hope we'll also look at our shortcomings today, namely a lot of our bowling and the top order batting.

We can't always rely on a 200+ stand to win matches! I hope once the deserved praise and elation fades a little bit tomorrow, our coaching staff will not be complacent enough to not be a bit critical of some of our play too.

Please don't mistake this as a doom and gloom post..it's not! That was an incredible win today and can only give us confidence.

Any others since?

Wow! Went out at 4pm and get back to see what looks like a win at a canter!?

A not dissimilar shape to either innings. Both bowling sides must have fancied themselves strongly at half-way, especially them what with having the runs on the board?

That knock should do Lewis's confidence with the bat a power-of-good.

And a first decisive innings of the season from Hildreth. If he could have a good 50 over campaign then it could kick on into his final quarter of CC stuff, hopefully.

As for possible improvements? One wonders whether JL might get a chance vs Kent, ahead of GD?

Very true. This was unexpected but hoped for based on performances this year it was the first but on the potential of players the hope is always there.

The bowling strategies were unfathomable at times and Jack Leach has to think he has something of a chance for the next game. With the good there was the bad. Alf and George were as bad as Tim and Craig were decent.

Marcus and Alex looked out of sorts while this was the day James produces at least once a season of effortless and chanceless glory. Whenever I wonder about him I get one of these days when he is just sublime to watch. Lewis was even better than him on the ground at times.

It's not a finished product by any means but this may have dispelled some issues for players that T20 might have put in their minds.

50 overs gives us time to muck it up but also time to sort it out.

Terrific win by Somerset, Durham fielding fell below standard at times once we had passed 200, but that's what happens when a side sees the match slipping away from them.

Not sure even the most optimistic Home supporter would have given us a chance when Alex Barrow was out, but we came through with a result.Obviously several of our batters will be unhappy with their own performances, but pleased to see Hildy hit top form, followed by Lewis Gregory with his top FC score.
Good knock by Paul Collingwood, but felt some of our bowlers could have been better,(Thomo & George)not sure we have seen the best of George at all this season.

626 runs in a day and enjoyed by a quoted crowd of 4200.....what a great game Cricket is at times.

Wasn't able to arrive until about 4:00pm so claim the credit for the remarkable turnaround!!

A soon as I arrived (at 68-3) it looked like the Emperor and Colin I were actually getting the better of exchanges. When Colin went after perhaps dragging his foot onto the whitewash there was the temporary blip from Alex but the two centurions got their heads down and batted with great sense.

What a delight to the Emperor back to his best. Question - is this his first ton since his daughter was born??

And Lewis looked what he has occasionally promised - a very good batter who hits the ball with real power into the gaps. He stood comparison to the Emperor in his pomp today.

Great win.

What dismal bowling at times from Alfonso and George in particular and well done Cove and Tim G. Fielding was quite ordinary as well apart from a couple of great catches, a particularly special effort, rather like picking cherries, by old man Tres!

Special batting, quite devastating at times from Hildy and Lewis. I nearly went when we 5 down. I'm sure many did, but fortunately I took my place on the football terracing and Tractor proved the inspiration we needed, though I wonder if his brother (he came too) knew how vocal he is!

At one point I heard Tractor and AVT discussing when he could bowl at Grockle, at least I think I did.

Had a nice tweet from Steffan Jones, referring to his mate TG.

I think the stewards are now more friendly and a lot more professional.

In the end I enjoyed my return to the CG, but if limited overs stuff doesn't return to Sundays, my money will be staying in my pocket until I retire.

All so predictable. The serial glass-half-empty brigade on parade right from the start (even knocking the size of the crowd now). Yet coming back on the thread at the end with the familiar `so glad I was wrong` line. Where is the website equivalent of the politicians` lessons will be learnt?

Not a mention at the end either (apart from post by Botham) for the turning point of the match - not the stunning twin centuries (brilliant though they were) but the captain`s amazing catch at cover to dismiss Paul Collingwood just as he was in his pomp. Another half dozen overs of Colly and Somerset could have been chasing 360/70.

There was a tied game vs Worcs maybe 5 seasons ago under lights. A 40 over game in which I think it was either 270 each or 280 each.

I think Hick and Davies both hit tons in reply to a Somerset total that I think also included a ton - maybe Pete or CK.

Always great to read threads like this after the event. Still amazed how many on here (and it's way worse on the Club's facebook thread) slag the players off from so early in a game. No, it wasn't looking good at halfway or when Barrow was out, and there's still a lot of improvement for the team to make - but can't take anything away from a great, great win.

Delighted for the players, club and crowd, most especially for James and Lewis - unlike Smith and Jayasuriya, both home-grown smiling smiley

Sorry we can't all be totally and perfetly balanced like you CJM...oh wait a minute.

Today James and Lewis filled a half empty glass from their own secret store of good stuff they've been hoarding for a while. 8 hours of cricket? We were good for about half

You are quite correct about Marcus' catch it was stunning but it didn't really turn the game because Collingwood had already done the damage and it didn't end after he went as Muchall and his partners kept the pressure on up until the end including a number of consecutive boundaries off Lewis as late as the 49th over I think (74 ish off about 8 overs). It's all in the report.

Thanks ever so for classifying me in the 'half empty' crew as well! That's the second time in a couple of months. I've said I say it as I see it and people accuse me of wearing the Rosey specs and being the 'company man'. Love it when I get pigeon holed for being miserable with the rest.

The cricinfo data man said it was the highest 6th wicket List A against anyone for Somerset and the best List A partnership for any wicket against Durham. It may be more because it was flaming high. The 6th wicket against Durham that it replaced was only 123 I think.

Made it to HQ today (well after 40 overs of the Durham innings !), to see a truly magnificent perfomance by James & Lewis. Got my timing right for a change !

Beyond the pretty accurate reporting earlier on this thread, my thoughts, in no particular order:

1) Why do bowlers persist in bowling short dross on a pretty unresponsive wicket ? (Alf bowled two half way down the pitch as soon as I arrived & got duly despatched). No idea what was going on there.

2) After a (very) scratchy start, our midde order fired spectacularly. I can't recall James giving a chance in his 146 n.o. & he made it look ridiculously easy at times. His Partnership with Lewis G. (who played with fantastic maturity) was a joy to watch, as was their mutual delight in getting their respective 100's, and finishing things off.

3) Mustn't overlook the important effort of CI, who steadied the ship at a very shaky time.

4) So nice to see us coming from behind (after the first few overs when we were 33-3, the D/L guideline showed as needing 111 !), when so many times in the past, our speciality was snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

5) I thought the ground looked generally terrific, aside perhaps from the outfield looking a bit patchy in places.

6) Good to leave the ground to the sound of SCC (I presume) singing the Blackbird Song !

Enjoyed the day immensely. May not be able to make it on Thursday, but hope the good stuff today continues (if we can score 300+ with our top three out for 20 odd, just think what we could do if we really do get it right !).

No, there wasn't much criticism of the players earlier, other than:

- we've let them back in
- we are bowling half-track rubbish
- start the car mother, we're home early tonight
- bizarre captaincy, seemingly no plan
- gone backwards as a one-day side
- our bowlers gave it away

Seriously, I can see that much of the above appeared valid when it was written, and we don't appear to have been very good for a lot of the match - but we were calling the game very early, and it's this rush to post something when there's still a lot of cricket to be played that I find irritating - especially when it is so critical of captain, players and team who haven't given up, but are still trying to win a game, let alone a competition. The facebook site is a LOT worse, and verges on the unreadable - I am trying to stop myself from doing so during games as I'm easily provoked!

"We've let them back in" and the "bowlers gave it away" aren't 'criticisms'. They were statements of the facts of the game at the times they were written.

I'm afraid I can't answer for the others except the 'start the car' comment which was written after Alex Barrow followed Colin back in after, as Grizzz said, Ingram had steadied the ship a little.

Again no 'criticism' of anyone just a comment on what I personally expected to happen next which was the collapse that I challenge you to argue was not the more likely option given our record in these positions recently.

I think if you check the other Grockle posts at the time I did also say that the only way we could get back the 50 to 75 runs we had given away to let them back in was if James was inspired. No comment on the accuracy of that assessment it seems?

I understand it is hard to read but it was the way the game was at the time.

'Slagging' it certainly wasn't so I personally would appreciate it if you did not put honest reporting of the game as it progressed in the same pot as (and I agree with your assessment) the comments made by our glorious FB posters.

Chalk and cheese is putting it too lightly.

To be honest, I've no idea what folks people think should be said by posters who are sat watching the ball be pummelled into the middle of the wicket by our bowlers to no effect?

Is the idea 'If you've nothing nice to say about the bowling, then say nothing?'

I suppose we could try that and just have vast tracts of silence whenever the cricket is of a low standard. In the case of yesterday I get the impression that radio silence would have had to be maintained for a period of something like 40 overs, representing the final 20 overs of their innings and the first 20 of ours.

There is, however, the point that some of those who are not at the game and who, for whatever reason, are not able to listen on the radio, may like to be able to log-in to this site to read some detail about 'what is going off out there?' as Mr Trueman would have said.

If posters want more 'balance,' during in-match comments then may I suggest that all posters desist from the superstitious practice of not posting when a good Somerset partnership is in progress? Because it truly is THAT more than anything that causes an imbalance whilst games are in progress.

Mike - re your posts on the subject:

I'd suggest that perhaps yesterday's 6th wicket stand was the highest in any one-day match between two first-class Counties (or possibly even teams)?

Your report of what the radio said would not be incompatible with that, given your finding of a massive stand between Kent and Cheshire.

It may depend on whether you think the threads need filling regardless of what there might be to say. Any fule can see* when Dockers or somebody is going for ten an over that he might not be bowling well...it might be more useful if those lucky enough to be there could find something more positive to write if the threads need populating. It's like a dropped catch: the negative side is that the catch was dropped, the glass-half-full is that the chance was created.

Have to agree whole heartedly with this post and especially your comment regarding the facebook site it really is unbearable to read - some of the criticism is appalling and the comments made at times re disgusting.

You highlight the comments made on his site and I feel the comment we have gone backwards as a one day side perhaps questionable (I know not said by you). Yes as a 20/20 side this year we clearly don't have the batting power we have had in previous years with no KP or Jos together with an out of form Tres and latterly an injured Keis but as for the longer form I'm not so sure. KP didn't play, Jos had limited success for us in this format and with the likes of Lewis, Cove, Mesch (and I like the look of Ingram) I feel we have a good young team at this format. Would like to see Max play as I feel he is a better one day bowler than Dockerell and his energy in the field is first class. Perhaps I have missed something but what injury does he have?

I stand by my comments about going backwards as a one-day side (which were balanced out by huge praise for our CC efforts) which I made based on the T20 campaign, our first in 6 seasons (I think) in which we've not got out of the group.

Yes of course there were valid reasons for it, which you list, but it wasn't a good T20 campaign with 7 defeats.

Re the 50 overs competition, no reason why we can't mount a good challenge and the next few weeks will tell. Great start yesterday, although of course we did also win our first T20 match this season!

As I offered the opinion yesterday, I hope the great stand between JH and LG won't simply paper over the cracks, and we examine areas of our game that weren't so good (Alf and George's figures, the top order batting etc). Get this right and we could have a very good 50 over campaign!

Yesterday was simply brilliant, one of those days we will all remember during the colder darker days of winter. Despite the brilliant return to form of Marcus in the CC, and Alf's great 4 day bowling, Lewis has been my player of the season so far.

I had to go out yesterday just after PT was out and so was not especially hopeful, which made the news all the more delightful when I read it in the evening.

When are the "experts" going to notice that Gregory is perhaps the best young all rounder in English cricket? SCCC still remains off the radar for much of the time, it seems: in today's section of the front page of Cricinfo dealing with yesterday's 50-over matches there is a headline about Maxwell scoring 146 in the first innings of a match, but not a word about a similar (undefeated) score by The Emperor in a far more testing, second innings situation.

As I said to my Surrey-supporting friend yesterday when he bemoaned the fact that "only" Roy was in the England Lions from the Oval (hilarious), if Hildreth had played for Surrey, he'd have 50 Test caps by now (rightly or wrongly). As I was reminded all-too-maddeningly-briefly at Uxbridge and in the Cricinfo article from last night, he is fantastic to watch when on-song.

In a selfish way, I'm happy for our young players like Gregory to stay off their radar - esp if they're gonna mess with our pace bowlers.

Shepton

My "job" at the game is to tell you what is happening and what is being said about the place. I'll happily answer questions posted in and I'll look for good and bad where possible.

My "job" is not to sugar coat the bad for you so that it is palatable to the reader of a sensitive disposition or look only for the candy when mostly all around is @#$%&.

We probably saw some of the best and the worst of our one day season yesterday.

I gave you the worst when an ex-international spinner was asking for the reasoning on why a present international spinner was being given another over after being pummelled only to continue to be pummelled in the same manner

I hope I also gave you the superb other side of it when two Somerset players indulged in one of the most historic partnerships of any pair of Somerset batsmen ever.

I'm sorry the first seems to offend you while you only want the second but that is certainly NOT my "job" and not the reason why I gave it to myself to do.

However I will not sit silently while you bunch the more extreme FB rantings of the uninformed with the speculation of those who have rights to non positive opinions here and the actual reports on the game and classify it all under the term of 'slagging' if it has any negative tone.

The people some came on yesterday to berate are not presently on Grockles.

They have too little to 'slag' about and can't really do it for their desired long period of time because we aren't having too bad a season.

Some presently only come on occasionally when things are slightly bad and make the odd comment (but become a little skittish because their allies are not present) then disappear when anyone offers balance.

Others haven't been present all year because they have nothing to say when there's nothing bad to continue on about.

There are even those who seem to have seen the light and now seem to see themselves as allies of the positive fraternity.

If you don't like the level of balance then come on and redress it yourself, you will be most welcome. Debate comments that you feel are over the top on the wrong side of a debate with other posters. But please try and avoid insulting other posters just because they don't fit your own definitions.

We try to be about searching for 'balance' but we can't do that if we start to define what it is within some narrow parameters based on our own particular view which no-one should then be allowed to deviate from. Balance moves from side to side and totters about the middle. It is never really defined as this or that for very long (if at all). It is certain that no one person or group have a monopoly on it at any time.

Personally I quite like it that way, it provides a dynamic element to discussions on here.

Careful Lol!! Don't get the ECB start thinking we've got a couple of gems in Lewis and Cove (the Emperor is prob off their radar for good sadly).

I'd rather they plied their trade this year with us and didn't get 'Developed' by the national team!!

Agree about the lack of SCCC media awareness.

If the ECB took ANY notice of me, Compton and Hildreth and Trego and Gregory and Cove (and Kieswetter if not injured) would all be playing at Southampton today. Perhaps happily they don't.

Even after a fantastic win like that I see nothing wrong in saying a bowler did this and he did that. Even while I was watching I even thought that at times our bowling was not good enough, and it could be even said the same for the Durham bowlers.

What came across my mind was that both innings were very similar in that both teams lost early wickets and when both balls got older batting became easier.

Really don't want to fall out about this or go over the top on it. I don't think I "insulted other posters" in any way at all, and that was certainly not my intention. I thought I was debating - I certainly wasn't aware of the "ex-international spinner ... asking for reasoning" - not sure how I could have been. I can't really join in on comments during play when I'm 100 miles away and often out of contact with the interweb until the evening.

We all have different definitions of both "fact" and "balance" - mine (which I'm happy to admit are not shared by everyone) tend to err more on the side of being generous to those fighting on our behalf and not giving a game up until it's over - that's not sugar-coating, in my book.

It does seem correct that "We probably saw some of the best and the worst of our one day season yesterday", and I'm glad that the best, in the end, overcame the worst. My rose-tinted glass remained full.

And long may they remain that way because others will not stay in place and sometimes the view from them has to be provided as balance to that.

Here's the thing, SP.

Any 'fule,' may indeed guess that if GD is going round the park he might not be going well...

...BUT, if somebody came on here and said 'looks like Dockrell is bowling rubbish,' they would probably find themselves immediately challenged on the basis of 'You're not there so what's your basis for saying that?'

But if somebody who is there describes the actual bowling in what they believe to be honest and realistic terms, they too get moaned at...

...Folks can't have it both ways, I'm afraid!

And, as I say, the common practice here of not commenting when SCCC batsmen are going well INEVITABLY leads to a lack of balance in terms of in-game comments. If folks are going to moan about negative in-game comments, then they need to make personal effort to redress those comments with some positive ones of their own...including about our own batting! (When there is something positive to say).

For my part, from this day forward, I shall no longer be observing the unofficial posting policy of medieval superstition and shall now post during our innings if I think there is something good to say about an innings in progress, rather than waiting for the batsman to be out or the match to end...

..I somehow doubt that this will cause a sudden rash of SCCC batsmen getting dismissed in the 30s, 40s and 50s..

FWIW, IMHO, etc etc, the only type of posting which really gets my goat, is when the "start the car, this one's all over" type comments appear during the first or second session of a four day game, or before the powerplay's even finished in a short game.

You say "But if somebody who is there describes the actual bowling in what they believe to be honest and realistic terms, they too get moaned at..." - that's a fair point, but my rejoinder would be that the comment doesn't HAVE to be made, certainly not in a negative way.

"Dockrell is rubbish, waste of money, never will be any good" is what you'll see on the facebook threads - less likely on here.

"George has just bowled an awful over, hope he pitches it up more next over or Tres will take him off" is the tone I'd prefer to see (not saying that's right or wrong, just my preference).

"George has been off-colour for a couple games now, let's give Jack a go in the next game" can come after the game has finished, allowing time for GD's next over to have been a brilliant double-wicket maiden.

It's largely a matter of tone, patience and generosity.

And acceptance in some cases as well.

A comment like the above is so much better than using the word 'slagging' to universally group three categories of people when you don't actually mean it except in reference to about 40% of the people you group.

We are all guilty of this and need to be willing to accept that when others may point it out despite CJM's dislike of people who are prepared to do that.

Well said, AGod. We are sometimes absurdly superstitious on this site, thinking that what we say or do a million miles from the action will have any impact on it. Indeed people are beginning to notice that my vow not to change my underwear until Somerset win the championship is serving no very useful purpose.

Re: yesterday's bowling and the short stuff.

Those of us that were there (and some that weren't) may remember the 40 over QF at Bristol last season:

Somerset deliberately bowled short at the end of their innings and we were informed afterwards that the reasoning was that the square boundaries were far longer than the straight ones.

On that occasion the tactic worked well.

Clearly, yesterday it was not effective but as the long boundaries on our ground are also the square ones then it logically follows that we may have applied the same rationale.

Personally, I'd have no problem with somebody coming on here to criticise negative comments about us bowling short if the criticism was based on something such as 'The straight boundaries are short and they have strong front foot players who had been effortlessly driving the ball to great effect.'

I don't know whether the above had already happened yesterday or whether we went to a pre-conceived 'short,' plan and then failed to try something else when it did not work?

Tres changing the bowling 11 times in 12 overs implies either that he was very unimpressed with the bowling OR that he considered conditions to be so loaded in favour of the bat that constant rotation was the only hope of keeping the runs down.

It seems to me that both sides were overwhelmed in the field once the batting side went on the offensive.

Re: Early Morning Sunday Cricket!! Durham 50
Posted by: SheptonPaul (IP Logged)

Is it also possible that he was responding to criticism that he tends to have a preconceived plan to bowl bowler A for 5/6 overs, then bowler B for 5/6 overs, then introduce bowler C ect ect, regardless of how they're bowling or the runs they're going for, the batsmen or the conditions...?

One-over spells are a bit mad, some might say, but they are a legit tactic for putting the batsmen off and show a certain degree of flexibility which Tres hasn't generally built a reputation for! winking smiley

It certainly seemed to be that MT had no bowler who could take control of the batsmen when they were on the offensive. As I said yesterday the wicket was very slow, the one day usual slow delivery was almost totally ineffective as batsmen seemed to have enough time to reset before the delivery arrived!!

He did rotate, Graeme Smith used to do it in T20's in 05 to keep the batsman unsettled, and looking back on it today I'm not sure what else he could have done with George and Alf being taken out at the time. I did honestly think that he'd decided, this is going to continue until someone gets a wicket!!

Durham had a much bigger problem because they weren't bowling badly, we were just batting sublimely and no bowler was safe no matter where he put it.

Listening to James this morning I have to agree that the defining moment of the game was much less Banger's dismissal of Collingwood and far more the innings of Colin Ingram who took the panic out of our reply and set the base for Lewis to come in and play his game.

The other great thing was how keen James was to get Lewis over the line for three figures. He asked him if he wanted it? Took a single to let him have a go and then had his hands in the air before the centurion when Lewis hit the second boundary to reach it.

The last time I saw a partnership with that kind of cameraderie was when Ponting played second fiddle to a younger batsman at Scarborough as he put the Yorkshire bowling to the sword. The younger bat? Mr James Hildreth.

A brilliant victory, which was all for the more cheering because (surely) it was, for much of the match, so unexpected.

I followed much of the Durham innings and the second half of the Somerset innings via the radio commentary - on the basis of which, I reckon that the great majority of comments on this thread were realistic and reasonably expressed. One point about Dockrell's bowling on which Blackwell commented was that he appeared to be bowling more slowly than has generally been the case. Perhaps this, and the relative small amount of bowling he has done recently, contributed to what seemed to be a surfeit of full-tosses. Blackwell also suggested that JL appeared to be struggling when he had seen him bowl in a recent second team match.

The Emperor could almost certainly have bettered his highest score in this format. But instead, he selflessly allowed Gregory the opportunity to reach his first century in any first-team match (though, contrary to one comment above, it was not, of course, a first-class match).

Both Gregory and Cove appear to be genuine all-rounders in that they deserve a place both for their bowling alone and for their batting alone.

Ian made some worrying comments about Jack during the day, not criticisms of his ability but about his present situation and uncertainty about how to proceed with him.

He also asked a number of questions about differences he saw in George's bowling, especially the speed of delivery and looking at the video of play, it seems obvious that George is frustrated by his own performance.

Do the guys need some mentoring perhaps?

I'm a bit worried to hear about IDB's comments about Leach.

They also surprise me a bit because JL seems to have had decent figures in most of the recent games for the seconds, with the possible exception of one or two T20 games.

Re: Early Morning Sunday Cricket!! Durham 50

His decent figures aren't getting him a look in in the firsts at the moment so it may be a discussion about how to make that leap.

Munday had some very decent figures in league and seconds cricket and never worked that one out.

If he can't make the leap he really has to consider making a move of a more permanent type because if George is still getting the place even when Max is injured where is Jack's place in the grand Somerset scheme of things?

On reflection I feel just the same. No need for great analysis, so as long as posters aren't being rude or offensive, say what you feel and try and be balanced.

Our bowling was generally very disappointing, with few exceptions and Marcus must have been tearing his hair out - fancy having to ave words with Alfonso, who didn't seem to take any notice.

Two brilliant catches, mundane batting from our lot until LG came to the fore and the rest is history.

Did miss the comfort of the member facilities and the presumably free wi-fi.

Love to know how the ECB came to the decision to play most limited overs cricket when the public are working?

Colin Ingram might not agree with your assessment of his innings being 'mundane' as he put 80-ish on with James.

Not sure there is free wifi in most of the areas of the ground unless things have changed - there is pretty limited wifi for latecomers to the Press Box to be honest and that isn't going to change until the new pavilion is up and operating.

Can anybody confirm what happened early in the Durham innings, I was looking through the camera at the batsman at the OP end, Marcus was the only slip fielder when the batsman edge the ball towards him, because Marcus was not in the picture I can only go by the crowds reaction it sounded like he missed the catch but I don't know for sure.

Marcus immediately put a second slip into the first slip position (I think it was JH) and he moved to second slip, several people in the OP below me said “it's a bit late now”
