Craig Overton and Tim Groenewald return for the 50 over match against the Welsh and seem to be the only changes from the T20 defeat at the SWALEC on Friday evening. Mesch is in for the visitors so it's a welcome back to him. It is also the first game for Mahela Jayawardene in this format for Somerset.

Commentary
A grey start to the one day Sunday as Somerset face Glamorgan for the second time in 3 days. The T20 was not a great success for us but the selectors seem to be keen to make changes to the bowling line up and leaving the batting very much as it was. Tim Groenewald returns with Craig Overton at the expense of Davey and van Meerkenen.
The side is;
Allenby, Myburgh, Trego, Jayawardene, Hildreth, Gregory, van der Merwe, Overton C, Davies, Groenewald, Waller
The pitch is the one that was set to be used for the Middlesex CC1 game before Chris Rogers moved the strip and with some rainin the air and heavy grey cloud cover the fact that Glamorgan won the toss might be significant. We stand third in our group, 2 points behind Essex and just below today's opponents so we would like to beat this lot today amd keep the hopes of a quarter final in this tournament alive. I'm not personally sure that this is the side to do that but we need to see how we stand after the innings. Press hopes are not high but it is for Jim and the boys to prove us all wrong.
Wagg opens from the New Pavilion to Johann who goes over the top on ball 2. He is opening with Jim who has a few things to prove. But it is Myburgh who has seems to have been given licence to hit as he puts one in the air, close to a fielder but safe, to the Somerset Stand boundary. 8 after one.
By the 5th it seems to have settled into Allenby anchoring and Johann going for it. 34 for 0 with Myburgh on 23 and Jim on 6 and ominously 5 extras from Wagg and van der Gugten (Hogan took over from the New Pavilion after Wagg's second.
Meanwhile JM goes about his work. He brings up the 50 with a mighty six into the Trescothick with the third ball of the 8th and then sends an even longer one from nowhere to bounce off the New Pavilion with the third ball of the next to bring up 60. By the end of the 10th this has become 63 for 1 as Johann slogs one straight to Lloyd in the covers off Wagg. He hangs his head because he was looking really good. But his 39 has at least got us moving and it is up to Peter Trego to follow him and keep it going.
Pete does take over as the strokemaker while Allenby looks to accumulate. By 15 overs we have 93 and the 100 arrives during the 17th after which Pete puts his ex team-mate actually through the door of an Ondaatje Hospitality box. Welcome back Mesch.
Jim Allenby goes to 50 at 141 for 1 in the 23rd. Surprisingly it comes off 56 balls with 4 fours. I thought he'd had more of the strike than that. Nevertheless Pete has caught him up needing 1 for his 50 when Jim calls him through for a quick single to Rudolph and loses the gamble as the Glamorgsn captain takes his stumps out. Allenby goes at 149 for 53 at the end of the 24th.
Mahela walks out and stands at the non strikers end until Trigger calls him through for the single to take him to 50 off 50 balls with 5 fours and a six. it also brings up the 150 and a possible 300 score is on the cards with 25 overs gone. Rudolph looks to put the press on now that the Sri Lankan is at the wicket so he introduces Ingram and spin in the 29th. it is 190 at 30 overs and Peter deposits the ex Somerset man to the top tier of the Botham to bring the 200 up. This pairing looks like it might nuold on the base setup until Trigger steps up the wicket and flips the ball straight into the hands of Hogan who is there for the shot. With 80 to his name and a ton on the cards Pete has been stupid and walks off with his eyes to the sky!! 215 for 3. The run rate has fallen as James gets to bat with Jayawardene and we all hope that these two can see us through to the end of the overs and take this over 300 to about 330 st the same time. With 36 down we are on 'double nelson' and need 100+ off the 90 balls left in this innings.
And what happens? Completely out of character in the 36th Mahela looks to hoick Hogan over midwicket and loses his off stump. 223 for 4. He had slowed down at 37 and now it is up to James to control the back end to get us over 300. Lewis is lookimg to get on with things though and with 10 overs to go we have 250. Then the 43rd over arrives and Hogan gets Lewis plumb LBW at 263 and then Hilda in exactly the same way two balls and 1 run later. 264 for 5 and Reolof and Craig have the job now. With 5 to go we have 279. 51 to the 330 target.
Apologies for the fact that this story seems to have halved and changed format overnight. The full story was here and then simply wasn't as it reverted to an earlier report for no apparent reason that I can fathom.
The Somerset wickets kept falling quite regularly and the final push toward the 50 overs was left in the hands of Craig and Ryan Davies who, nurdled scrambled and simply ran their hearts out to get the total to 322 leaving Glamorgan 323 to win.
The reply started well with Lloyd and Rudolph pushing past 50 before Rudolph went to RvdM via the hands of Hildreth. Roelof got the second as well when he bowled Bragg at 96 with 17 overs gone. But Glamorgan bat a long way down and this just brought Colin Ingram to the crease.
However the wickets just kept on coming and before we got to 100 up Lewis had Lloyd caught by Craig Overton. So with 18 overs gone the Welsh weren't at three figures and we were on their last big partnership as Donald came in to partner the ex Somerset man. Allenby put the 'press' on early but Max struggled to keep it tight and the two 'Glams' settled into their task. By the 28th they were moving past 150 and it required Craig to return to get first Ingram who managed to get the bat on a high bouncer but without any control and he fell in the deep to Myburgh in front of the Caddychack and then Donald some 10 runs later caught by Gregory in the deep on the other side. 176 for 5 made it a game for us to lose.
We had some rain about 4:15 and were off until just before 5 when the game was reduced by 3 overs and the target went down to 313 but they visitors were well behind the D/L for most of the game.
Wallace and Wagg looked to set up for the run in and had added 20 to the score to move it up towards 200 when the third member of Somerset's wicket taking trio stepped in. Gregory had Wallace caught by Max at 197 which brought the other ex Somerset man Mesch out to try and get his new county home. Unfortunately for them he came up the wicket very early to RvdM missed it and was competently stumped by Davies. 202 for 7. Craig didn't have a good game to be honest.
So they still have 110 to go 14 overs to go. It's the wickets left that is a problem. Wagg is no slouch but he was the man to do it now with Salter who can hit a ball. So it becomes total v overs v wickets. We need tight bowling and no morale giving deliveries for the batsmen to build confidence on. We also need wickets so Jim keeps with the pace to try and get through them. It works with Wagg who snicks Cove at 223 and is caught behind but when he replaces him with Tim at the New Pavilion, it most certainly doesn't as Salter takes him for 20 odd bringing the runs needs down below 50 with enough overs to go to see the light at the end of the batting tunnel. Why didn't he bring himself on and take the pace off the ball? It is mysitfying to me that an experienced medium pacer in control of the team seems unwilling to use that weapon in times of problem.
Salter is looking to take this game away from us even at 260 up with less than 5 overs to go. We are looking decidedly nervous as Lewis holds his nerve and has the dangerous batsman caught behind at the end of the 44th wth 274 up. Ther last two bat manfully on and we all breathe in when Tim changes ends and is broughton at the River. No worries, Tim comes back and does the job having van der Gugten caught in the deep by the excellent Waller and the game is over, a 33run D/L victory to us and we are second in the South table.
We nearly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and need to thank Johann, Craig, Lewis and Max for their excellent outfield work keeping the ball inside the boundaries and turning fours into singles and twos. Max went one better when he slapped a certain six back onto the field saving four runs.
Good solid performance based around Trigger's 80. Some questions and possibly some changes in selection on Tuesday but a win is a win is a win.

This it the squad for tommorrow's game.
Fact; We still have a chance to qualify for the 1/4 final
Fact ; We are low in confidence and need someone to step up and produce a match winning performance.
Fact ;We have an opener who is in the form of his life.
So what do we do. We play MT in a one day for the seconds on monday,A win tommorrow would go along way towards progress. Sorry but I just don't get it,

Ahh we will see how they use Mahela tomorrow.
Here I'd leave him out I'm afraid. He isn't a fast enough scorer to open and if he is simply going to bat he is not worth his place in a 50 over side.
I know we have to support the side they put out but presently that isn't the strongest one we have if Jim is in it. He is a busted flush presently as a captain and not in my strongest eleven if he is unwilling to play as an allrounder.
If he bowls I'll be happier but unless something happens that is different tomorrow I no longer have faith in him to lead a Somerset side.
There ya go. Who listens to us anyway. I'll go and see what we make of it and hope Jim makes me eat my words.

But unless Tim Rouse is going to come in or Roelof is going to be tried a little higher up the order, then we have picked yet another white ball squad that looks a little light on batting to me - though I suppose the picture changes if Allenby and Trego fire. Neither has generally impressed with the bat in white ball cricket this season. If they don't fire, the top three looks uninspiring, as a unit. And then the rest of the order after Hildreth would look questionable too. We may be relying on a strong start from an in-form JM and then a long, long partnership between Mahela and JH.
Personally, from that squad listed above, I'd leave out Cove (definitely) and TG (more to keep him fresh for CC in view of JO injury than any other reason) and then after that I'm unsure as to who else to omit.
However, I suspect that management will leave out Max, VM and Rouse.
Still, at least Josh Davey figures to get an opportunity.

Considering the next best player named in the squad - Hildreth - has less than half the runs (78) at a strike rate of around 86 I think its wrong to talk of discarding Jim at this stage. I don't expect him to bowl much - seven overs in the four matches suggests he'll use himself sparingly (incidentally one wicket at an average of 42 pleases my ocd side).
I'm ever the optimist - plus my T20 spectacles are rosier than most having watched two wins out of three. Yes Jim's form in recent T20s has dipped, but that didn't stop him making an important contribution in the recent CC match. No reason why he can't do the same today.
If they can't even accurately tell us what the weather is doing by means of looking out of the window, then I shall disregard the rest of the forecast (which seemed a reasonable one).
The Quantocks are clearer here than they were when I was in 'em half an hour ago and it's grey but dry.
Thanks for the info about Jim's batting Bag....maybe I am disillusioned with his captaincy to such an extent that I've no time for him at all when I ought to let him at least show what he's made of with the bat. I certainly wouldn't have him as captain and I would have liked to have seen something a little bit more than our T20 side with Tim and Craig back in and Josh and the Meerkat.
Glamorgan won the toss and will bowl...good one to win.
Side is Allenby, Myburgh, Trego, Jayawardene, Hildreth, Gregory, van der Merwe, Overton, Davies, Groenewald, Waller with Josh as 12th man.
Even Maynard said there was no excuse, given how experienced the side is, for the consistent failure to have done so.
Pete has just put Mesch into one of the hospitality boxes actually through the door!!
I think that one of the two currently at the crease should probably look to hit the acclerator now as we want MJ to have scope for a long innings and can easily afford to lose another wicket at this juncture.
It sounds like a predictably good batting track, and we shall probably need a total north of 320 to be confident of winning, I would imagine.
So one imagines that Max/VDM may well prove key.
I wonder whether the fact that Mahela essayed a shot like that implies that he believes we are off-the-pace on this particular track?

Don't know how it's missed you.We *may* have a reasonable chance of defending that and Cooke being out should be helpful. One would think we need to get INgram early.
Still have NO IDEA why you would continue to offer them pace when they are going for it and you have medium pace available.... In other words, why did the captain NOT bowl himself?
It is beyond me I have to say.
But as Essex have probably lost we are joint top. Same points poorer run rate
1) Won nicely, and remain well in competition for honours in this comp..
2) The useless Captain that is JA performs equally nicely and gets a 50.
3) Over the hill Trego gets 80.
4) The super hero Craig M., that we apparently so foolishly let go, goes for 8 1/2 an over and is wicketless, also contributing a monumental 3 whilst batting.
Funny old game.

Probably Allenby, having bowled very tidily up-front, under-bowled himself once again - certainly MW's four overs proved costly. One wonders whether, for future home games in this competition, Josh Davey is liable to get the nod ahead of MW? I would say we could add in an extra batsman, such as Tim Rouse, but with Allenby bowling himself only sparingly and Peter Trego apparently no longer a consideration with the ball, then I suppose we cannot do that.
But perhaps that's what MM should do to make Allenby bowl himself more - take away one of his bowling options!?

Well the game I watched suggested the Captain batted and bowled well. Myburgh got us going. Trego had a good innings and the Sri Lankan jawa did ok. We caught our catches and bowled well as a unit. Well played Somerset. Oh and we are second in the table.
Wingers have fun with yourselves.
But it was far closer than any other game in what seemed - from a competitive stand-point - to be a dismal slate of games. Warks and Middx had oppo in early trouble then cantered home with the bat. Otherwise the side that batted first sprinted off into the distance and was never seen again.
It will not be acceptable for a test match next year.
I know you started a thread about removing Rosey and there's Maynard. I assume you demanded that Nosworthy be kicked out as well. Just put "Out" as your footnote and add the present DoC as appointed... It would save you time.
Unless you do some research perhaps and possibly suggest a candidate that would fit your demanding standards. Then you could post an "In" instead.
You know 'gardening leave' is another way of effectively sacking don't you? Gardeners rarely come back to their jobs.

Having watched quite a few games in fist half of the season, at Taunton, Lords & the Ageas Bowl, our scoreboard stands out markedly as being the slowest by far, as well as featuring regular errors.
The scoreboard(s) seem(s) to have been an issue for some years now. No idea why, but surely with all the investment made in the ground, we ought to be able to get it right.

It would be good to have a system like the Trent Bridge one but I think we'd all settle for one that was accurate and up with play.
There was a minor glitch at the start of the Glamorgan reply but that seemed to be the major one - were there others as well?
Good batting display, contributions all the way down.
Bowled and fielded very well too.
Great all round performance, fielding was top drawer which always goes down well.

I thought we were about thirty runs short of what we needed, but in the end it was enough.
When Andrew Salter hit a six in the 44th over it looked like we had better tighten the bowling a bit.
Ryan Davies is about to stump Craig Meschede off the bowling of Roelof van der Merwe.
Ryan Davies desperate to catch this ball, Mark Wallace didn't get any bat on it.
This was such a brilliant catch by Lewis Gregory to dismiss Aneurin Donald off Craig Overton that all the players within a hundred mile run to congratulate him.
Colin Ingram got to much of a top edge on this and Johann Myburgh caught him off the bowling of Craig Overton.

Roelof van der Merwe bowled well today seen here bowling Will Bragg.
Mahela Jayawardene was bowled Michael Hogan after looking like he could have got a big score today.
Our top scorer Peter Trego had a bit of luck when he top edged a ball over the wicketkeepers head for a four.
Johann Myburgh seems to deal only in boundaries he hit 32 out of 39 in boundaries, this was a six.
I am still undecided about Ryan Davies wicketkeeping! The only other disappointment today was Max Waller's bowling, no fault with any of the out fielding.
The boundary commitment in our bowling session was outstanding with Max, Craig and Johann noticable
And that was about it. I think he is the one who Pete put into the Ondaatje pavilion through one of the Hospitality doors.
The stats suggest that he would not have a) played consistently here b) made a significant difference c) been loved by the critics of Somerset as the answer to their dreams for the club's future. Even though he is used as an example of the club"s poor decisions and managent.
So I suppose the answer to your question is yes from a personal point of view.
We vary in opinion as to the loss to Somerset, and that we will never know.
Kids in for free may have helped the size of the crowd, in saying that it was a very good crowd for a fifty over match.
I am surprise the extra seating has been removed, I wondered if the extra seating may be needed if we get home matches in the QF & SF of the competition. Fifty over match support always seem to increase has the competition progress.
When it was announced Craig Meschede was coming on to bowl he received a very good clap from the crowd, read into that what you will.
I think he made the right decision and carving out a place for himself in Cardiff was his best option even though that will also be a fight.

He will gradually up the order (he and Wagg regularly save the top 6's blushes in the CC. What has disappointed me is his bowling, he needs to get back some of what he had a few years ago.
I don't think 1 game determines whether or not it was good for him to go or not, although he has been disappointing throughout the 50 over stuff.
I personally hope he goes on to prosper at Glamorgan, if he becomes good enough I'm sure we will at the top of the queue of clubs trying to pry him from Glamorgan.
But I don't think he will ever be the top six batsman that he wants to be.
He asked for that chance when he went to Glamorgan. They started him at eight and he made some runs there and they then moved him up the order (very possibly because they promised him that he would be given a chance if he did well at number 8) but he was there for 3 or 4 CC matches, did nothing, and was promptly returned to the number 8 slot. Since being returned to the number 8 slot he has not really been able to repeat his success there that he had prior to being moved up to number six.
At present, I would regard him as a fairly marginal member of Glamorgan's CC team, given his lack of success with the ball.
Unfortunately he did have one thing in common with the mighty IDB..... more often than not when the game was set up for him to take it home he didn't.
The absolutely glorious innings of Blackie tended to get us very little.
