Last Women's cricket - S.Africa v Oz and Glammy later
Not the SWALEC
By Grockle et al
July 15 2017
The last women's international before we get our home back from the ICC 'you can't come in without a ticket/credentials' crew. Not a lot to play for in terms of qualifying (and not facing Australia in the next round). The Saffers have never beaten the Aussie women though so there's that. Later we rock up to the 'Big Empty' that is the SWALEC for a Blast match without Corey Anderson (not playing at Uxbridge either) but where Tom Banton may make his first appearance.
An overcast Saturday morning in Taunton welcomes the farewell match of the Women's World Cup to a sparsish crowd of kids and the usual member suspects as two confirmed semi finalists finish off their league obligations. South Africa would just like to win for the first time against the Antipodeans and the Aussies just want to finish on top. The only game with anything in it is the NZ v India match at Derby. Hope the weather is better there.
Here the game starts with the Australian openers Beth Mooney and Nicole Bolton facing tight bowling from Ismail (Pavilion) and Kapp (River) which has the batters at 2/0 after two with a swipe that could have given Kapp a wicket with her 4th ball from Bolton . That is then pretty much it for 20 overs. The South African bowlers make no real in roads and the Aussies just move forward to 50 in the 14th. Bolton reaches 50 at 85 and the 100 arrives halfway through the 19th. Mooney takes her score past 50 at 108 in the 20th. Everything looks pretty regulation until Mooney is bowled at 114. Then we have a mini collapse as Haynes is c&b without affecting the score at 117, then at 154 Bolton cauught by Kapp from the bowling of Luus who then bowls Villani around her legs sweeping on one knee next ball.
Soi the game evens up but in comes Ellyse Perry, a bat of some class, she steadies the ship with a 51 ball 50 with one six and a smattering of fours. The 200 comes up in the 37th and Perry goes to that half ton a little later in an over where Klass is taken off after her secoond beamer (Perry pulled the first one for 4 from above her head). It is very nice to see Alex Blackwell playing on a Taunton pitch - been a while since 'Blackie' has been at the wicket.
Perry goes looking to push on caught by Khaka on the mid wicket boundary. 229 for 5. This becomes 235 for 6 as Blackie tries the same and is caught by Klass. The 250 comes up but with it goes Ian Healey's daughter (married to Mitchell Starc it seems) Aliyssa, also caught in the deep by Daniels. Gardener is not there lon either as the Aussies keep trying to put the Saffer bowlers over the boundary and failing. She gives Sune Luus 5 wickets when she is also caught deep by Daniels at 254 for 8 with 6 overs to go.
It doesn't go to the end though because both the last two Aussie wickets are sacrificed attempting to go over the top and end in early wickets. South Africa need 270 to win.
The Reply
Laura Wolvaardt and Lizelle Lee march out to face the bowling of Schutt and Jonassen and start in a very positive way and despite losing Lee caught by Haynes bowled by Jonassen at 32 they reach 50 off 11 overs. However the Aussie bowling is tight and questioning and the South African batting finds it very difficult to get away reaching only 85 by the 19th over although Woolvaardt a very solid 50 at the start of the 20th off 61 balls with 7 fours.
It is all going swimingly until Chetty is out for 36 at 98. The 100 arrives in the next over (23rd) and at the 30th it is still on with wickets in hand and 132 oon the board with the only fly in the ointment the loss of Du Preez. But from there it all goes pear shaped. Laura Wolvaart goes for 71 at 148 and from then on the wickets fall for very little and very often. 148 for 4 becomes 162 for 5 then 164 for 6, 164 for 7 and 165 for 8. Klaas offers some resistance but is out at 184 and the questions become can South Africa get over 200 and bat out the remaining overs.
Well the answer to the first is that Daniels and Ismail fight to 200 in the 49th (ismail especially with over 20) and we are into the 50th over with both women determined to keep the Aussies out. They have also moved the deficit to only 50 runs. Unfortunately Ismail puts the last ball down mid off's throat and South Africa are all out losing by 50 runs. What do you do? Smack the last ball to the boundary and stay not out or drop it at your feet and accept the defeat?
Ahh well South Africa v England at Bristol on Tuesday then with the Aussies taking on India at Derby on Thursday.

I knew we were in a T20 hole, but hadn't realised it was that bad.
Something has gone very badly wrong.
Grizzzly

Myburgh is out again - has he had another injury?
Hildreth is still in and Steve Davies is not only in, but restored to opening.
Hmm.

No Myburgh or Anderson, so pretty much a home grown team.
Allenby, Davies, Trego, Hose, Hildreth, Leask, RvdM, Gregory, Overton C, Groenewald, Waller
Not sure how I personally feel about this side.
Leask gets a chance. Would have possibly liked to have seen Banton or Ryan come in for the gloves and let Steve bat but the young Scot has been seen as a bit if a T20 specialist,
Not sure what else is available so Steve remaining, James remaining and Pete remaining wasn't really a choice was it?
Chasing again. D/L plan?

How long has it been you have been posting here - albeit more often in the past?
Was it the 'Glammy' that threw you?
Ingram gone

We don't have much of a choice seeing as our squad is so limited. You make your bed and you lie in it, because we are at our lowest point for years as a result of a lack of foresight and planning by various D O C's. Maynard is as much to blame as others for not seeing it coming though.
Glad they have given Leask a tryout. He has done well with the bat for our Seconds and in club cricket recently.
Haven't seen the latest score from Cardiff for about 20 mins., but I think that we may well win tonight.
Don't know why, but there it is.
A glass half - empty or a glass half - full?
Regardless, both glasses need filling up.
I bet some others will have equal difficulty.
May as well just have one thread for T20?
Don't ever change Grockle, quite unique and predictable.
Your thread was merged, there was no problem but you have to make the flippant comment rather than just posting on the thread.
We won't change the site - there is no need to.

I think you are right in this format of the game that we are missing resources but we are looking at a squad that is also 3 or 4 down from what we would like to put out there.
Corey was an issue last time he was here and probably too much of a gamble to go for.
I do not understand not signing the second international and if that is an issue of money then we do need to look at those who are highly paid at the end of the season.
Although I disagree with AG about his retrospective view of the forward planning for Elgar we were so strategically poor last season in this format that we needed experience and we haven't got it in the squad.
Myburgh seems to have a larger injury than we are being told. I'd have liked another batsman and maybe not as many slow bowlers on a wet night but Leask is supposed to be a batsman in this so maybe he will come good.
DL may win this o. If the weather lets it. Wonderful crowd at the SWALEC. Can't wait until 2020.

The reason why both topics had to be amalgamated was simply because I did not get away from the first game until 5:30 in a rush and knew I would not be home until after the start of the T20 match. You will notice my first post on this was 7:17.
When I did get home there were simply two posts on a thread started and comments already on the top thread so it seemed easier to just merge the two.
The petulance and pettiness that then ensued is not going to be tolerated here from part time posters with their own long term issues and they have been informed of that. They could have just asked for the reason.
To the posters with something to say about the game. If you want this splitting into two threads then please let me know by PM and I'll try and do that tomorrow but as the report is on the women's match and the comments are on the Glamorgan game I'm not sure it is worth it. We may not get a second half anyway and it might be a 5 over slog. But let me know.
The others... post on the subjects or go home and come back tomorrow with something sensible to say please.

The worst of it is that the batsmen are now certain to get 'one more game,' as they didn't get their feet wet here.
At the moment the only name that might be on somebody's list would be VDM, I'd have thought.
Another absolutely storming caught and bowled by that man Waller again. This time he seemed to set him up for it.

We could do worse than thinking about changing the Captain first - especially if the commonly held belief that he won't be here next season is true.
Let's face it, we were never likely to make huge headway in this competition and it looks less likely now than before the comp started (when it already looked unlikely).
So perhaps we should move forward with somebody new, be it home grown like LG or Max (captained seconds quite a bit) or maybe somebody like Roelof?
Let's face we've very little to lose by making a change. We surely need to win some games because losing everytime in T20 is unlikely to help morale ahead of the CC resumption.
Jim will still have to play so how will this disruption create anything but more instability?
If it can't get any worse and the strategy is from the centre how can changing the captain without changing the strategy create better results? The resources available presently are the same. Do you expect someone thrown into the job on a match's notice to suddenly stumble over the solution?
Surely if it can't get any worse then the way to go is fight to make it better this year and SERIOUSLY this time plan and organise for the T20 next year (our next to last top level competitive version of this format).
Cut your losses on this, blood the young, work on the mistakes and plan for the only meaningful thing left this season which is the CC1.

For the tennis Scrumper?
I'd take him at the moment.

It's worth a go, anyway, and anything is better than the definition of insanity..
I dont believe at the start of the summer we thought this. We were told Elgar was our 2nd overseas. But knew full well he could only play games 12 13 14. And thats only assuming he comes straight back to us not ordered to rest or have a recovery camp.
Unlike most i fully trust Matt and accept unlike many he has more knowledge and contacts in county game than i do.
I just can not believe if offered chance of Amir McCullum Tahir Marsh he'd say no he doesnt need them. He is judged on results and would want strongest T20 team possible. I also dont believe its money as we have had Gayle on mega bucks and are constantly told we in top 3 or 4 in country on player salary spend.
We have known how poor we have been in at T20 for past few seasons and the interest it creates in sell outs or near sellouts every home.
We were told we had a new plan this year but i cant see what. Very similar 11s going out in same order with same captain just with less overseas help.....
You are right though. Very little seems to have changed from experience and that seems crazy looking at our performances last year

We have had Gayle.
We have continued T20 sellouts.
We have fantastic accounts each year compared to many counties.
Plus we just must be a more attractive sell as a club than Derby Leics Glos Kent Northants etc.
Yorks have just signed Safraz last minute. An Aussue A tour just been cancelled. Glos just got Perera. Essex signed Tamim. It may not be easy but its not impossible.
Plus we have known Elgar misses first 11 since pre season.
It just doesnt all stack up for me.
We are a professional well run club.
All players are trying 100% and Matt must want the best possible side on the feild.
Plus wins helps Guy & Nash PR wise etc
We have a large wage bill so I assume we are constrained by the cap? This probably means we need some internal pay restructuring before we can just pop out and buy anyone from the external market.
As I asked earlier on another thread. Who is actually available on this kind of notice who has been missed by everyone else or wasn't in the market earlier?

Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2017:07:16:10:54:15 by Grockle.
I think we need to have an idea of which is our best T20 X1 and stick with them, rather than putting individuals under pressure to perform.
I don't know why JA is in team, as he no longer seems to bowl, isn't the most mobile and surely we have better batsmen.
I'm afraid we're a bit of a shambles and other teams seem to take a fancy to our bowling.
Attributes we certainly don't lack are courage, commitment and desire.
How can we be 'chopping and changing' when we've just played our third game.
Who is the better batsman on hand to replace Allenby presently - we could replace him with a more useful bowler perhaps.
Who do you suggest would captain in this mess?
You are talking about our bowling in the 3 T20 games we have played I assume.

Don't forget that all of our three Eng Lions' pacemen have received extended and (presumably) improved contracts in recent times, plus Steve Davies probably did not come cheap.
I think we'll find that with the retirement / departure of some experienced faces at the end of the year that, all of a sudden, Matthew won't be talking about how difficult it is to find overseas players next year....
I suppose the NC and CK wages came off the books but I strongly suspect that there has been a net increase in our wage bill over the past 18 months or so.
We spend vastly more on playing staff than at least 10 other counties who are all fielding overseas players.
Gayle was afforded last 2 years on presumably top dollar.
We are under the salary cap too so not constrained by that.
We have very very healthy accounts.
I just dont accept its money & we cant afford it.
Theories to me are pretty pointless on here. I like factual information.
We are not stupid. We are not intentionally trying to lose every game nor spent all winter planning for that to happen.
I as none of us on here are in possession of facts.
Im not going to slaughter Maynard or the players but would just like to understand things.
Some players are probably locked into contracts with wage structures that simply wouldn't happen nowadays.
Seeing as we are talking about money, I'm sure the club have sums set aside for further ambitious ground improvement plans, floodlights etc.
Perhaps the playing budget is restricted by this also.
A glass half - empty or a glass half - full?
Regardless, both glasses need filling up.
In fact the young changes have probably happened earlier than expected because of the CC1 issues. I'm all for the new boys. I'd like to see Ryan or Tom B in today behind the stumps. We need to look at Leask or let him go.
Interesting change in slant. I thought MM had ultimate cricket say in buying? Now you suggest he might be hamstrung by others. Are his signings his or not? This wasn't your view earlier in the season when others suggested he didn't have carte blanche to sign.

Arem't the central boys going to cover a lot of the floodlight costs? Though I'm not sure what the point is given the probable future of Taunton as a premier venue.

I agree with you that MM has an important input into the signings but I'm glad that you now admit that he is not the only voice or the single arbiter of who we have or have not signed in the past and that sometimes his views can be overruled by others.
Maybe we can now get rid of this myth of the 'Mayynard' signings and deal with the reality of the entity of Somerset County Cricket Club of which the DoC is an employee responsible and at least in conference with other aspects of the management.
Baby steps.

Tom Banton to debut
Where does that leave Ryan Davies?
If the situation is anything other than the above then MM would be a mug if he tolerated a situation where non cricket people are making decisions as to the merits of new signings...and I see no reason to suppose that non cricket people overrule MM viz players that he wishes to sign.
As for my 'not mentioning a budget'?
Some things are so obvious that they do not need to be mentioned. Even Warren Buffett probably 'has a budget.'
Our overall T20 performances have been so poor over recent seasons that something fundamental is wrong. Not easy to put a finger on the precise issue, but losing (as much as winning) becomes a habit, and unfortunately one which we have become all too good at.
We have to break the seeming inevitability of coming second every time.
I too wonder whether JA is the right man to lead the team. He isn't inspiring with performances, so what is he there for ? (Dare I suggest the same could be said for MM).
Would Lewis be an option as T20 Captain I wonder ? He certainly came up with the goods in the Championship at Scarborough.
I also wonder whether we have the balance right between on & off field spending. There doesn't seem to me to be much point in having a whizz bang ground if we don't have a decent team to perform on it !
So, there will be plenty of stuff to be discussed at the next member's forum with MM, (whenever that is - presumably not until the next Championship game). But, unless our season improves markedly, the marketing team are going to have one heck of a challenge on their hands trying to sell membership's for next year.
Best of luck to Tom today. Let's hope youthful exuberance rubs off on some of his senior colleagues.

Much as I would like to see a team of home grown players, but with most of the other Counties bringing in overseas stars for the T20, I think we have been very complacent in expecting to progress in this years T20 competition with the squad we have.
While it seems we have sold out for three of the Home T20's, we might well struggle to fill the ground for the remaining games based on our performances to date, and doubts about Corey Anderson's fitness will not help.
If we had named Two quality overseas players early in the season it is highly likely, even with this seasons increased capacity that all seven matches might well have been sold out prior to the start of the campaign.
Replacing Corey may be an option if we can't take short term measures to get him back on the pitch in line with those desired by Kiwi cricket.
However, there seems to be no real conversations being had about a second T20 player and that horse has pretty much bolted now if we don't start winning some of these games anyway.

Complacency is a dangerous option, for years the club has lived on its success
Off the Field, this might well be not the case in the future.
Our new C.E.O may well face a few big decisions sooner than later I feel when he takes over in September, along with our Chairman, as I really cannot see M.M changing the way he prefers to operate.

But plans may change I suppose.
Seems a pointless plan given the probable future of the County Ground as an occasional outground for annual franchise T20 matches and the home of a non franchised out of favour provincial side playing in the second rate Blast tournament without international stars and CC matches of some type if allowed as one of the remaining non bankrupt clubs by 2025.
Not exactly site investment heaven I would suggest.

Grockle, No I don't think M.M. will bring in an additional overseas now.

I have always respected Roger’s comments as possibly emanating from somewhere nearer to the corridors of power at Somerset CCC, than most of us lesser souls have access to.
Therefore, I find myself intrigued in trying to read between the lines of Roger’s final paragraph above.
If MM is reluctant to “change the ways he prefers to operate” I sense (but only sense on the basis of this one posting) that the hierarchy of the club may be growing increasingly impatient with him, and the results that he has achieved.
It may be nothing of the sort of course in which case we wait to see what takes place at the end of this season.
I am just intrigued – that’s all!
Matthew Maynard has always struck me as an intransigent sort of man, and that can be a weakness in any aspect of life.
Remember the fable of the oak tree and the willow tree.
Clarence Parker’s thought for the day.
I would not be in the least bit surprised if expenditures such as installling floodlights etc have knock-on effects on on field investment.
Roger - viz your second para re: complacency - I might be completely wrong but I suspect that realism/defeatism (depending on your point of view) might be at the root of only hiring one T20 player ....that far from 'expecting to progress with this squad,' we instead expected not to progress and so weren't going to throw money at the T20 unless, perhaps, we thought we could find somebody so amazing that he could win multiple games almost by himself. I certainly take your point viz ticket sales for later games, however.
In his pre-season interview Jim did not exactly sound bullish about our T20 prospects, and with good reason. Having lost our final 7 last year it would not have been unreasonable to conclude that we were unlikely to be a team that would be 'there or thereabouts in this competition,' and therefore in a position where getting a top overseas would be likely to take us from, say, 4th best to winners.

I love women's cricket.

An Australian lady I got talking to while watching a women's ODI at the County ground two years ago described women's cricket as "the purest form of the game" and I think she was absolutely right.
