The Royal is upon us... A Good or Dangerous future?

By Grockle et al

The second season of dual competitions in domestic cricket both 'supported' by the managing authority and mainstream media, supposedly while in direct competition with each other.  One heavily sold by the ECB and heavily featured on FTA and cable TV involving new 'franchise' teams in urban centres while the other is the one the cricket faithful are interested in and continues first class county progress through a British summer - the Royal London Cup.  Somerset returns to a second captain Ben Green and a second coach Paul Tweddle both reprising roles from 2021.  9 of the first team squad head for 'franchise' wonga along with the head coach and we continue on with a different squad (same name) but this time not as 'debutant' as last year. Meanwhile there are moves afoot to improve membership representation at the strategy and reset meetings through voluntary awareness raising work at the grounds over the next few days including Taunton on Thursday.

The second season of dual competitions in domestic cricket both 'supported' by the managing authority and mainstream media supposedly while in direct competition with each other.

The 'reset' of English cricket is supposedly in semi -full swing with an Andrew Strauss review that is going to take place 'soon' with input from the Chairs and chief officials of the counties adding their views where in 15 cases they 'represent' the views of the membership of their counties.  The Lancashire Action Group have taken a front and centre approach to this asking their management to state what that view is and making sure that it is also the view of the majority of the members of Lancashire.  Other counties are a little more reticent to let their members know what they think the members think about these things!!  After all there's possibly £1.3m in funding from the ECB involved this year (though the ECB have not made any mention of that payment this year specifically in the extended media deal with SKY).So counties have started to put together their own voluntary groups to check and report on what the membership actually think so the officials go to the meetings clear on what the view in their locality is.

Somerset are going to do this on Thursday.  A groups of volunteers will be giving out leaflets asking for member views on the future of first class cricket at the Royal London game against Notts.  They will be canvassing for votes for or against reducing the number of county games and the other initiatives put forward over the last couple of years so that Mr Hollins and Sir Michael Barber can go to the central meetings with the proper voice of the membership ringing in their ears to help the 'Mighty' at Lord's make decisions that Somerset supporters want to see and not those that may support minority views at a county and possibly national level about the future of cricket in the UK.

Look out for these people coming around with leaflets, survey sheets and Ipads and make your view clear to them so they can report that back to the Taunton powers that be before they decamp up to the capital to decide your future.

There is also the Lanacashire Action Group's petition that many are signing up to.  At first it was thought that seperate county online petitions was the way to go but after conversations it seemed to make sense to have one. If you haven't already signed up then the link is in the thread below this piece or you can find it HERE

This is important stuff whatever your view.  If you support the ECB changes then let the people who come around to talk to you know.  If you don't do the same.   These changes have been discussed without your input in the past.  The first time Chairs were asked to vote you were subjected to an advertisiing campaign for the changes from the central authorities packaged to you as an 'Awareness Raising' event by the Chair and the CEO but without any enquiry from you about what you thought.  These officials then went and made decisions in your name and although they now regret some of those decisions they made them against the general opinion of the county 'for the future of domestic cricket' and here we are in the future.  The second time the membership were ignored again because of the spectre of £1.3m which Somerset it seems could not afford to give up and so were effectively influenced into providing their support - again when the membership did not seem to want the result they received which was spun as being decided on with support of the majority of county members.

NOW the future of the county is in the balance even more and the membership has to be consulted.  There seem to be no plans to do this presently at Taunton and there also seems to be little knowledge of what the CEO and Chairman's view of the changes in relation to the county are.  The action groups around the country are looking to report the views of the membership to the officials and force them through meetings and primary data to consider the opinions of the people they work for and represent in these important decision making events towards the end of this season.

The ECB said they would consult the members of the counties before deciding the future of the game.  They failed to do that effectively before introducing the 'Franchise' competition with the complicit co-operation of the 18 first class county officials in the main.  The volunteers around the country are trying to make sure they don't do that again.  If you think it is important please help them to do this by making your views clear to them in Taunton this Thursday.

Thanks for providing the link Grizz I hadn't got around to sorting this one out

The Lancs Action Group are very front and centre on this issue. They pushed their own club to get membership representation on the management - via an EGM I think

They were checking out opinions at the Southport game and as a result of that they have now pushed this petition forward. It doesn't take long to fill in

One thing that did come from this was that a 'review' of the nature of cricket in the UK should have consultation with the first class counties and as 15 of the first class counties are membership based organisations, it should require those counties to check with their memberships before they respond to Mr Strauss' review body. I don't see an awful lot of consultation going on in Somerset and I expect it isn't happening in large amounts elsewhere - we have been here before and we got shafted then as well.

Article in The Times today by Elizabeth Ammon say that it’s increasingly likely that the Championship will be split into two next season. A premier league of 12 teams and a feeder league of just six.

Also likely that Championship games will be reduced to just twelve, two of which could well be played abroad.

In other no doubt entirely separate news this week, Sky’s new TV contract, negotiated by one T Harrison, has been extended until 2028, apparently guaranteeing the future of the 100 for the entire duration.

Have a nice weekend everyone ! I think I need to find the sick bowl !

Within that extended deal, the commitment to pay non franchise counties the £1.3m yearly to allow it to go ahead is missing in any written form according to the Cricketer

So Harrison leaves in the manner he managed... without a principle to his tarnished name while counting his ill gotten gains.

The review was initiated before the start of the domestic season, with one of the aims to address the problems of the England test side. It was then 1 win from 17 matches.

The recent spectacular success of the test side should mean those rumoured changes to the Championship are not required

Unfortunately SLLL the article specifically quotes Andrew Strauss as saying that the changes are most definitely needed, notwithstanding the welcome resurgence of England this summer.

This is a link to Andrew Strauss's ECB blog on which the article is in part based.

The fourth bullet point (some way down the article) is worth a read, if only because it contains the term 'best v best' which I seem to recall Tom Harrison using in his meeting with members in 2015 which presaged the eventual onset of The Hundred.

I note Strauss claims that they “haven’t even discussed,” some of the options for the county game that are being speculated upon in the media.

If it is going to be 12 Vs 6, then the question, in the event of relegation and assuming that they even use this year’s tables to decide, would be whether it would be the whole of CC1 plus the two sides promoted from CC2 at the end of the year OR whether the approach would be that the two relegated from CC1 must start in the so-called “feeder league,” with the teams third and fourth in CC2 being sent up to the top league. Should Notts finish either third or fourth in CC2? The latter option would clearly be taken. I don’t know how much they do or don’t care about Middx. Should Warks finish in the relegation places instead of Somerset? Relegation would be cancelled.

If the Div Two table finishes as it stands today?

I'd imagine that the "12," would just be the existing CC One counties plus the top two finishers in CC2, with the other six counties cut adrift as "feeder fodder."

Jon Stephenson Essex CEO / acting chairman speaking to Paul Newton commentating on live feed.

CEO's have been summoned to meeting at Oval next week (Aug 3rd?) to hear ECB plans on county cricket restructuring. Jon Stephenson not aware of any detail at present. The non-franchise chief executives (category B/C ?) had a meeting last week to prepare for this and are all "fairly aligned". Rob Andrew at Sussex and Tim Bostock at Durham were mentioned in conjunction with this.

Soundbites from Jon Stephenson on potential ECB changes as follows:

Take stock for a couple of years, bearing in mind commercial rights cycle starts again in 2028. Haven’t got enough time to react by 2023 e.g. new membership models. Financial models at Essex mostly done for next year, if less cricket next year there would not be enough time to restructure.

Agrees with Andrew Straus that there has to be change. Need to listen to ECB who are paymasters, but also listen to members and respect our great county game. New personnel at top of ECB should be allowed to be part of process.

*My* overall impression was that Jon Stephenson (and perhaps the other non-franchise county CEO's) accept changes need to be made to the domestic county structure, but would prefer to kick the can down the road

The numbers Grizz. If they are your main short term objective then cricket in the county is secondary. CEOs who aren't there for the game only look at the numbers its why Sports CEOs MUST embrace the sport and its fans to be succesful. It has to be at least part of the consideration. Not sure Mr Hollins is there and it is in the ECBs interest that he not be

Actors do it a lot... never admit you can't do something. Worry about it once you have the job. He wouldn't be the first Somerset appointee who saw us as a stepping stone to a central job.

Mr Hollins? No idea what he thinks. Annie Chave thinks he's genuine but I don't know enough about him I'm afraid.

I’d imagine, Grizz, that the ECB - in its ideal world - would have succeeded in getting its former employees (those who have drunk the ECB kool-aid) into the CEO posts of all 18 counties. What better way, after all, to ensure that things would be seen “their way.”

The media must be getting very confused. They are not allowed to say “Batsmen or Man” yet the dreaded 100 is now being called “The Hundred Men”.

Today's match. From the BBC

The Hundred Men
Southern Brave Men v Welsh Fire Men

Re: The Royal is upon us... A Good or Dangerous future?

hahahahah

And they can't make the argument that "ah - ha, but this is a match involving men so that's why we've used ""men"" ," because otherwise folks would counter than, in a man's match, the batsman is, er.................a man and so could be called a batsman!

So the ECB have definitely messed up by having the men's competition known as "The Hundred Men."

The Lancashire item posted above has received scathing comments on the Lancashire forum. The general consensus is that it means the exact opposite of what is said. So the last consideration will be player welfare. Another comment was along the lines of what on earth has the number of county games got to do with Ben Stokes being tired? They’ll be claiming that Jos Buttler is stressed out at the thought of all the Lancashire games he is missing next.

Seems to be a few little issues up in Lancashire as the Action group move for 100 signatures for an EGM and the county start banning members for misogyny

[cricket.lancashirecricket.co.uk]

There are issues when people tweet as we all have experienced in social media .. humour, sarcasm & irony are difficult to get across so if you are looking for it and want to take stuff out of thread context it is always possible. There are a couple here in that sense and one that really should have been a 'count to 10 and then don't post'.

But the bottom line seems to be that Lancs feel threatened so they've gone after the LAG. Not sure its going to stop the events but it will make the EGM 'spicy'.

I read somewhere earlier a suggestion that the Lancs action group plan an EGM and special vote which they claim would then *bind* the Lancs officials to voting against the ECB’s changes. I assumed that this was fanciful, to say the least. But if Lancs are going after the LAG like this? Maybe it’s true?

They needed 100 signatures for the EGM and had 88 on Friday so I doubt they are going to fall short. Suppose if they put forward a 'binding motion' and it gets the votes it becomes policy. Though would assume it requires a larger than simple majority for something like that.

It's all a waste of time.

The 100 isn't going anywhere. Fact. It isn't.
Give it a few years there will be 10 teams & it will be 5/6 weeks or longer.

I applaud the sentiment but those in charge don't care about counties or its members.

Gordon said very little of interest Thursday but he could not have been clearer, the hundred is here to STAY.

Gordon has this line something like "what is non negotiable is we need world class cricket at Taunton"
I think he thinks that if that was a south west hundred team that would be success.
If so he is totally misreading the situation.

Members want 7 or 8 red home games & all matches in all formats with their full squads available.

The fact we will have a made up south west smashers 100 team with 1 or 2 Somerset players in it at best really isn't going to satisfy people.

Re: The Royal is upon us... A Good or Dangerous future?
Posted by: Grockle (IP Logged)

The fact that an ECB event is here to stay ( is it more likely if its in capitals?) does not mean it stays in its present form or is 100 balls long . The expectation from those commenting years ago was that the alteration was a marketing ploy to suggest difference and that soon after being established it would become nothing more than a name and the format would return to T20.

If the plan is to undermine counties and the counties 'don't care' then let's get that out in the open and at least let members know what they are paying for. The ECB need a consuming public and the 'new' fanbase is not enough. If they want to @#$%& off the county memberships then cool. Lets make that clear. But members may kick them harder than they thought (though apathy may prove that they don't have to care as well).

Lancashire faithful said the LAG actions were 'futile' seems LCCC are not so sure. An uncomfortable ECB and franchise 'cabal' is a pliant ECB and franchise 'cabal' and if this is where they want cricket to be then lets be honest about it and we can all move on knowing how valuable our contributions are to the argument.

If 'they' don't give a toss and opposition is pointless then let's see 'them' say that and if they won't willingly then I see no problem in forcing the issue.

Lancashire cricket don't recognise the action group.

They have banned several of its members from attending old Trafford and disassociate themselves with everything about it.

They are doing their own members meeting, as Gordon has promised.
But we have been here before.
No Somerset member voted for the HUNDRED but Somerset did. Dress it up as you like, that's what happened.

If we have a members forum it will not have a jot of difference in what Somerset vote for, it won't.

Gordon reels off the money income from India, the players schedule etc.
County members wanting 7 red ball home games & a first team 50 comp means nothing to them, not when it really comes down to it.

It's sad where we have come to really.
County cricket really is at a tipping point.
What 99% of those few hundred at the QA want just isn't going to interest those making decisions.

Members feel they are important, Gordon tells us members are important, but it's words.

They don't think they need us, maybe they are right.

Members aren't valued at Taunton. Count the complaints, facilities, catering, banned from members bar, hospitality imposed on everything.

Those above feel there is a new audience out there who will pay more & loyal dedicated long standing members are dispensable, we will soon be finding out who is right.

The only thing certain is how things are now will only get worse in the eyes of current county members and what they want.

Re: The Royal is upon us... A Good or Dangerous future?

My take would be this.

The ECB failed to copyright the T20 format, which they invented.

They’ve been sore about that ever since.

So they invented a new format in the hope they could syndicate it and flog it abroad. If there are no significant takers for it? The Blundred format Will get ditched and the ECB Will tell the counties they’re not allowed to play T20 anymore as - from now on - we will have only “franchise T20.”

Re: The Royal is upon us... A Good or Dangerous future?

There are some obvious issues with the Blundred - most especially the most “valuable,” customers in KA-ching terms remain the lager louts with little interest in the cricket. They do NOT mix well with the “family audience,” that was the rhetorical target of the Blundred and the lager louts will not attend if it’s cold and drizzling etc.

Of course, one ironic element was that the ECB said a shorter game was needed as fans don’t have the attention - span for 120 balls! Okay… so what makes the ECB confident fans will pay enough attention to stick with them once the novelty factor wears off? I mean I expect the Venn Diagram of people who have short attention spans and people who are fickle, probably has a substantial “intersection,” area.

Lancs will face an EGM whether Lancs recognise the LAG or not

If Hollins consults the members then that's progress because Nash and Lavender didn't and neither did Cooper (I think or was it Cornish?)

Don't care if it goes nowhere but highlights the hypocrisy of saying members matter if they don't. Then it is up to members to make their own decisions as 10000 Lancs members have done in the past years.

Not sure what the point of saying 'The situation is@#$%&so do nothing about it' is. At least when you know what their position really is you can't say they fooled you.

But you sit on your hands if you want WSM. Others can decide for themselves I'm sure whether they need your history lesson or not.

The easiest way to ensure the ECB and certain counties do what they want irrespective of member views is to simply do absolutely nothing. Hell of a plan there.

It's worth emphasising here, most county cricket clubs have a co-op ownership model, the distinguishing characteristic is that they are owned and run for the benefit of their members, rather than outside investors.

A supportive membership is vital to run these 'mutuals', for example many Somerset members donated their membership fees and some made additional donations during the pandemic

My view is that whilst it’s very likely that opposition will ultimately prove futile, since the ECB are such absolute @#$%&, it’s still worth people being as difficult as possible to try and make things difficult for the ECB.

I fully support anyone standing up for their views, and supporting county cricket.

But I'm equally realistic to know it won't even register with those that make the decisions.

It's all about money.

Sky wanted the hundred, they didn't want the blast.
Sky get what they want.

They have a big new deal, which big shock DOES NOT guarantee the £1.3 bung to counties beyond the initial first period.

The ECB haven't the balls to get rid of any counties, it doesn't look good. But they can make it happen by killing off the monies they hand out & devalue the cricket they have on offer to sell to the public.

And there you are back on the usual mantra the moment people put up a coherent opposing view to yours. The people doing the surveys are also 'paying' members just like you and your seemingly inviolate 'elite' live cricket watchers.

I'm not a member as I've been out of the country for a decade. But I'm also a 'live' watcher and the only thing your 'paying' allows you to do that I can't is vote in your membership events. I personally respect that people pay for that right.

You choose not to take action? That is fine.

But the fact that you 'pay' does not add value to your opinion that puts it above anyone else who involves themselves in county cricket so maybe give it a rest. It simply gives you another area to have a say in a forum you seem to 'pay' for but don't see the point of... ahh well each to their own.

You seem to slap that in posters faces as if it means anything. But here I'm afraid it has as much value as you think member action will have on the future of cricket. Sweet Faith Arkwright

😁👍

I have never once said my opinion has any more value than anyone, paying or not.

It is quite often more informed by nature of being at matches and seeing, hearing things but in no way ever makes me "more right"

I am just realistic in my views & the effect a few names on a petition is likely to have on the decision makers.

Counties don't make money.
Members do not pay enough to make themselves financially sustainable.
It's the plain truth.

Sky pay the money which keep us as a county afloat.
If they want a 7 week hundred with 10 franchise teams that is what will happen.

At Gloucs the membership have apparently been told that it would cost £750 per year as membership fees to replace the Blundred income (WSM is correct that there’s no current promise to give the counties anything from the new Blundred deal BUT said promise was surely withheld so that they can promise the counties money from the new deal in return for their vote in favour of moving themselves closer to oblivion by voting for blazer Strauss’s reforms).

But surely that is based on the lack of revenue coming in from a full second white ball tournament and a premier one located at the wrong part of the year with mass media competition from the managing body. A different scenario with those things dealt with would decrease that yearly cost

Well maybe WSM don't throw the 'I pay and watch live' chant about when you can't persuade someone you are right a little less often perhaps?

It isn't really a case of whether action will have any effect. It's a case that there is a symbiotic relarionship between ECB, SKY, counties & members. The ECB need counties to provide resources or their franchise dream is stillborn. The counties need the investment to run their infrastructures and support external community structures. SKY need the content and the money they are willing to.put in suggests its a little bit more important to them than they make out.

BUT they need consumers and consumers MUST either be manipulated to believe they want the product or be listened to about that product. Personally I'd rather they made an informed choice rather than just drank the 'Koolaid'. I think that way cricket may stay not 💩 a little longer.. If the short-termism of the ECB & their media partners is left totally unfettered then I give the majority of the game less than a decade and I'll leave what is left behind well before that and I won't be alone. Whether I'll be in the majority or not is irrelevant. It will just decide the rate of terminal decline as a meaningful 3 format sport

You wanna bury it early be my guest. I'd rather make the greedy motherless sons wriggle a bit first however small their discomfort is.

I'd also like to see liars in the system be shown to be what they are rather than pillars of the cricket community local or national.they make themselves out to be.

Idealist? Probably But so what I'm allowed to have ideals and even principals and I'm still allowed to demand that others justify theirs if they say they have some... as long as we don't vote in another bunch like the last lot at the next General Election or is that opposition pointless & futile as well?

Interesting that, per WSM, Gordon Hollins implied that the 16.4 represented “World Class,” cricket;

If it was truly “world class,” then the teams should be a match for the top international teams, should they not?

Let’s look at the top six for “Manchester,” that played yesterday:’

Jos
Phil Salt
Wayne Madsen
Andre Russell
Paul Walter
Laurie Evans

A “world class,” top six? I think not since only Jos (definitely) and Russell (maybe) merit that description.

Otherwise you have one borderline England player and three that are probably nowhere near the England white ball sides.

The debate on this thread pretty much sums up where domestic cricket is now. In one hell of a mess with no clear way forward.

The 100 may, or may not, (depending on your viewpoint) have brought in new fans, but it is also tearing the game apart, setting fans and counties against each other, all compounded by a governing body utterly divorced from the sport it is supposed to represent.

It feels like the Miners strike and brexit all rolled into one.

As regards the ‘100 isn’t going anywhere mantra’, which is commonly thrown around these days (including by GH - hardly surprising given his prior role and given that he was an architect of the damned thing), I fear that may be entirely accurate.

However, just because a product continues to exist, doesn’t mean it can’t change or evolve, perhaps even into some kind of beefed up County based T20 format.

Similarly, TV contracts can be re-negotiated, tailored or amended, if all parties see mutual benefit.

Maybe I’m dreaming, but at least the new ECB Chairman seems to place a lot of value in the County system and the importance of building on existing infrastructure, rather than tearing it down.

Fingers crossed he can build bridges.

And soon.

The problem also seems to be that the powers like the polarising nature of the argument because it pushes the positives of the franchises while highlighting the negatives of their competitors. The Blast is not perfect and neither are the franchises. There is a system that could bring in the best of both worlds but the present management seems disinterested in anything but their view and that isn't going to end well.

Has anyone ever seen a governing body more determined to antagonise the fans of its own sport?

I can only assume that their data and surveys indicate very little overlap between County memberships and/or those who watch the CC games and those who go to see England games. I say this because the England games have been the headline money-grabber for the ECB so - even if you thought the Blundred was going to be a money-spinner eventually , you wouldn’t want to risk hacking off those who would otherwise attend your existing money spinner. But the ECB, like a pound shop Tory party, seems absolutely hell-bent on a “culture war,” through which it wants to rid itself of a good slice of cricket’s traditional supporter base.

We might have a chance of a win at the Oval next week.

As I recall it, when we played Surrey last year at the Oval, they had a reasonable side out - with Stoneman, Patel, J Smith, T David and R Clarke etc

Looking at their team for the game vs Leics the other day - only Patel was playing, with a bunch of second team players and so their batting looks - on paper - even weaker than ours.

According to the SCCC facebook page the volunteers who were at Taunton last Thursday will be there again tomorrow

My understanding is that their leaflet has a statement adapted from the Surrey version and the people collecting signatures were asking for support based on the following;

"To oppose reducing the number of first class cricket matches and ask that the SCCC board commits to vote against any plans from the ECB to do so."

They'll be collecting signatures or talking to members again but they did say that after last Thursday they had over 200 supporting signatures already so the possibility of calling a Special General Meeting would be there should that be necessary.

My understanding was that a representative was going to meet with Mr Hollins first to see what his reponse was to the findings - that was planned for the week of the 14th I believe and I think he has already agreed to consult members over the changes when it is clear what they are planned to be. That may be enough - but I'm not sure how much the membership trusts the CEO on this issue so they may move to call a meeting anyway.

The activity in Lancashire is getting national media coverage in the Torygraph and Cricketer over the last few days - the twitterverse is all over it and there are moves for the same kind of action in Surrey and Essex. The "Lancashire Action Group" have already applied for an SGM with their 100 signatures. So it's kicking off...

Interesting times.

The new ECB Chairman (albeit not formally in post until Sep One) is supposed to be not only an elite businessman but an ultra-adept people person unlike (in that second respect) C Graves, T Harrison and, dare I suggest, G Hollins.

One wonders whether the ECB May plan to deploy the man in some kind of long overdue charm offensive (all charm having been utterly absent from the ECB since the moment Graves first darkened its doors). As somebody who opposed the Hundred (albeit with his brown cap on) he might, possibly, be listened to.

This is getting rather off topic - my fault and I apologise. However, in my inglorious cricketing career I batted in just about every place in the order. It didn't seem to make much difference whether I opened or went in at No 11. However, I found batting at No 11 the most stressful, knowing that if I got out that was game over whereas, earlier in the order, my wicket was not quite so terminal. I therefore have a natural sympathy with any No 11 batsman - or batter, indeed.

I'm feeling a bit tired now and need to go for another snooze!
