Lewis Gregory is the only change with a 'minor hand injury' in comes Tom Lammonby to face Surrey at the Oval. Looking to build on the excellent first win against Essex.

The Somerset side makes one change with the captaincy going to Craig Overton as Lewis Gregory is out with a small hand injury. Tom Lammonby takes hhis place. Somerset won the toss and have decided to chase once more.
Therefore, Lawrence and Evans come out to face Craig Overton from the non-pavilion end. A tight first ball is followed by a ramped four but before they get into their stride Evans whips one to Tom Lammonby on the boundary and an easy catch send him back at 7 for 1 with a score of 4.
Riley Meredith takes the second and Lawrence tries to go big off his first ball. Enter Tom Lammonby with his second catch and Surrey are 11 for 2 with Jason Roy and Captain Ollie Pope at the crease 7 balls in. Roy is hit by Meredith just after this and carries on though there is some time taken to make sure he is OK.
COve takes the third and Roy opens his shoulders to send himto the boundary. Unfortunately he does it once too often and gives Lammonby his third catch while Surrey slump to 28 for 3. This brings their new 'wunderkind' Smith to the crease and he takes a lucky four of an inside edge first ball followed by a poor choice single where Tom Abell nearly sends him back run out... very close.
The captain is on the money with his third and he goes for a 6 to Smith off his last but has only conceded 19 off 3. They save Meredith for later and Jake Ball takes the sixth. Surrey finish the powerplay on on 50 as Smith starts to motor. The skipper bowls himself out and he ends on 1 for 30 thanks to Smith who has moved to 27 off 13 balls.
We look to change the nature of the innings with spin as we introduce RvdM but Smith takes a liking to him and takes him for consecutive sixes in the second half of the over as he goesd to 41 off 17 and the score is 77 for 3
Ben Green starts his evening with the ball and ends it on 85 for 3 while Smith goes to a quick 22 ball 5 in the next with 4 sixes, they'e got it back. Ball takes us to halfway and Surrey are near the 100 at the end of it. It comes up in Roelof's 11th after 2 balls. They need shot of Smith as Meredith is re-introduced to try and break the partnership but that doesn't happen and during the 12th Pope and Smith go to a hundred partnership with Smith providing 73 of them in 31 balls
The 14th sees our 'Dutchman' back on with 3 runs off his 2 so far. First ball he comes roaring back getting Pope playing on for 40 off 32 and the score at 139 for 4. In comes Jordan Clark.
Ball takes the 15th and looks to keep Clarke on strike and Smith away from it. He toes one and gets away with it but we hae brought it back a little with about 5 to go. But Smith is still there!! The 150 comes up with a Smith 4 and Ball fights back and that is the score at the end of the 15th.
Enter Ben Green for the 16th, Clarke keeps finding the dead areas with swipes but he doesn't in this over and he goes to a catch from Sean Dixon at deep square leg. Curran comes in and gets a single and then Greener inswings Smith - excellent yorker. The Surrey man goes for 87 off 38 and we have them at 153 for 6. He then sends Curran back caught behind and 3 in the 16th for Mr Green.
Meredith is back for his last, he takes the pace off against Abbott and bowls him to make it 156 for 8. Excellent spell from him.
Green returns and pairs with Dixon at deep square again to send Atkinson back and take Surrey to 158 for 9 and his final figures are 4 for 32 with Steel and Johnson at the crease. Brilliant bowling.
Ball takes the 19th and rolls his fingers over the seam to keep the last 2 guessing. The tail get to 163 before Jake bowls the last man. What a comeback that was after Smith took the game back after a great start.

Tom Banton and Will Smeed face Surrey's Spencer Johnson who is left handed and exciting. He bowls a maiden first up. Atkinson takes the second and Will is off the mark with a single before Banton follows him with a boundary. He follows this up with a second and it's 10 for 0 after 2.
In the next over, Banton gloves one and is strangled down the leg side with some good work from Smith behind the stumps. 16 for 1 with the keeper out for 11. However Smeed starts to look for shots and puts one almost out of the ground. Unfortunately Johnson bowls him in the 5th at 31 and we hae two men at the crease with no runs between them. A rebuilding exerccise for TKC and Tom Abell.
As TKC starts to move, the 50 arrives with Kohler-Cadmore on 18 and Abell on 4.
Abbot takes the 7th and gets Abell who holes out to Burns on the boundary at 54 for 3... not good. It gets worse when, with the lights on and Dickson at the crease, TKC is run out brilliantly by Abbot going for an easy 2nd, hitting one stump on the run. He was just starting to get the feel at 25 off 1 61 for 4!! Does not look that good as Surrey put their 'foot' on the visitor's 'throat' and their lies are running out (mixed metaphors?).
The halfway bowling is done by Sam Curran with the Somerset pair both on 6. He continues the Surrey onslaught by bowling Dickson at 8 for 5 without a significant addition to the score. Ben Green and Tom Lammonby may be the last hurrah as they move to 86 for 5. In the 12th bowled by Lawrence, Spencer Johnson makes a very creditable attempt at a diving catch. However, he is not fully sure he took it (i think he got it... just) and so refuses to appeal for the catch. Excellent professionalism in the game. It ends at 91 for 5
Curran continues into the 13th and there is a near run out early on. Surrey are good at hitting the stumps when it matters! Not only that but Clarke drops Lammonby at cover almost immediately afterwards. It doesn't matter though because Green is bowled next ball 93 for 6. The 'press' is on and Somerset are wilting under it.
Craig is dropped by Curran just before the 100 comes up but the demand is now really hard with the bats we have to come. At 103 Lammonby skies one to Johnson off Lawrence and leaves with 19. RvdM is in but he cuts, also to Johnson, two runs later 105 for 8. Ball is in and out caught by Curran off Abbott 106 for 9 followed by Burns catching the Somerset skipper without another run being added. All out for 106. That went pear shaped pretty quickly after TKC was run out. We fell apart after Surrey fell apart but we were further away from 164 than they were when it happened
We lose by 58 runs.

Sad he won't be there for those last few overs.
This prompted me to look for the USA v Canada opening match... to see Monty Panesar playing for the Yanks!! I thought he wanted to go into UK politics for Reform!!

Surrey lost their last six wickets for 11 runs, and Somerset their last five for 13. The difference was that Tom Abell was within a varnish-width of running Jamie Smith out when he was still in single figures, but Gus Atkinson did hit the wickets to run out Tom Kohler-Cadmore when he was looking dangerous.
I must admit I was disappointed by the women's match, for some of the fielding was very sloppy and the bowling often much too short - though its slowness allowed my ancient eyes to follow the progress of the ball from the bowler's hand which I can't always do in the men's game. The match was redeemed by some classy batting by Sophia Dunkley and Schofield for Stars and fighting innings by Monaghan and Southby for Vipers. We were sitting in the front row of the second tier of the J M Finn stand, right in line with the wickets which ensured excellent viewing.
I was also disapppointed by the men's match. Surrey started by losing three quick wickets, which raised my hopes and then suffered an astonished collapse from 152/4 to 157/9, but I should be barred from watching any match involving Jamie Smith playing agaist Somerset. Yet again he batted magnificently, striking the ball with glorious authority, and was probably the difference between the two sides. Gregory was much missed both as bowler and batter, but I was pleased and not surprised that his replacement Lammonby batted as well as anyone on our side, as well as catching the first three Surrey batters in the deep. Somerset's reply never looked like having enough momentum to carry the team to win and it all ended in a bit of a whimper.
