"Next Year" - Lancashire at Old Trafford

By Farmer White
September 27 2024

It came down to this.  We had just beaten the defending champions in a game many will long remember at Taunton and had come North to play the struggling Lancashire at their place in touching distance of the Championship.  We win this one and we face Hampshire at home at the end of the season with a chance... just a chance of making history. Farmer now takes you through how the last day went.......

County Championship 2024. Division 1. Lancashire v Somerset 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th September. Old Trafford.

Tom Banton was unavailable due to an ankle injury.

Lancashire. K.K. Jennings (c), H.P.N. Singh, J.J. Bohannon, R. Flintoff, M.F. Hurst, L.W.P. Wells, G.J. Bell, G.P. Balderson, T.E. Bailey, A. Phillip, W.S.A. Williams.

Somerset. A.R.I. Umeed, A.M. Vaughan, T.A. Lammonby, T.B. Abell, T. Kohler-Cadmore, J.E.K. Rew (w), K.L. Aldridge, L. Gregory (c), C. Overton, B.G. Randell, M.J. Leach.

Overnight. Lancashire 140 and 398. Somerset 146 and 204 for 6. Somerset need another 189 runs to win with four second innings wickets standing.

Final day 20th September – Championship challenge over

In the end, it was over quickly. Lewis Gregory was gone almost before he arrived, and certainly before I arrived. It is a mile-and-a-half walk from my hotel to the ground and I have had a vicious cold all week. A few extra minutes in bed and a slightly slower walking pace found me halfway around the ground to where I had been sitting at the Statham End for most of the match when Gregory‘s innings ended before it began. Whilst behind the player and media centre, directly opposite the Pavilion, where the players’ dressing rooms are, I heard what I thought was an appeal. It was in fact a cheer. “Lewis Gregory bowled by Luke Wells,” said the announcement and, with Gregory bowled through the gate, defeated by the googly, any remaining Somerset hopes of winning this match had, realistically, been ended.

An over later, Craig Overton, having just driven Wells through extra cover for four, causing the silly mid-off fielder to leap in the air in the process, was leg before wicket to Anderson Phillip to a ball which kept noticeably low. Another cheer and looks of resignation between myself and the old work colleague who had just joined me signalled the final realisation. Brett Randell showed some defiance, or resignation, of his own by pulling Wells three times in succession. The first two crossed the long leg boundary. The third, fuller, went through the stroke and upended his off stump. Somerset 220 for 9. Randell 9. James Rew cut Phillip through backward point for four, attempted to repeat the stroke off the next ball, another lowish bounce, and Rew chopped it onto his off stump which was left flat on the ground beyond the leg stump with the leg bail still in place. The morning had lasted a little over half an hour and the nature of the dismissals of Overton and Rew suggested that, even with more wickets in hand, winning this match would probably have been beyond Somerset.

And so, Somerset’s Championship challenge was over for another year. It had in truth always been a long odds bet. Once Surrey’s season was properly underway, they had always looked the most likely winners with Somerset and Essex trying to keep pace and Hampshire making a late run which, after this round of matches left them two points ahead of Somerset. Even after Somerset’s victory over Surrey the week before had brought Somerset close enough to give them hope, it had always been an unlikely proposition. After this round of matches, shades of the 1950s, Surrey were out of reach of everyone and confirmed as Champions for the third year in succession.

A look at the table showed Surrey had won eight matches to six by Essex, and five each by Somerset and Hampshire. Surrey had won every Championship match at The Oval in 2024 except the one against Somerset in the far distant days of April when Gregory had led a long final day rearguard action. All five of Somerset’s victories had come at Taunton, only one match there, against Nottinghamshire, being drawn, none lost, with one, against Hampshire, remaining. Somerset’s two defeats, both away, had been against Durham and now Lancashire. Surrey’s two defeats had both been away too, to Hampshire at Southampton, and to Somerset at Taunton, a match that now seemed a long time ago too. And so, as that old Somerset cricket saying goes, ‘Next year. Next year …’

Result. Lancashire 140 (K.K. Jennings 56, C. Overton 4-32, L Gregory 4-50) and 398 (L.W.P. Wells 130, J.J. Bohannon 60, G.P. Balderson 47, M.J. Leach 3-57, B.G. Randell 3-71). Somerset 146 (T.E. Bailey 4-36, G.P. Balderson 4-50) and 224 (A.M. Vaughan 68, T.A. Lammonby 49, L.W.P. Wells 4-36, A. Phillip 3-81). Lancashire won by 168 runs. Lancashire 19 points. Somerset 3 points.

Gathering red roses in autumn? - Lancashire away

For anyone going to Old Trafford for the whole match, Lancashire offer a four-day ticket for the price of three days. Their online CC ticket price is:

Adult day ticket £15 - Adult four-day ticket £45 (the prices in red on the site are for group purchases only).

Over-65 day ticket £12 - Over-65 four-day ticket £36.

Scroll to the bottom of the page for the four-day ticket option and click on 'see product details': Here is the link:

[tickets.lancashirecricket.co.uk]

The link works on my laptop but do check it takes you to the Somerset match ticket page.

You can also access it via the Lancashire CCC website, but as with many a website, it takes a bit of navigating.

I haven't checked the Lancashire regulations, but I have bought my ticket on the assumption that if the match only lasts two days I will not get any money back, if it last three I will, break even and if it lasts four I will be in pocket.

I wish you a good trip Farmer and any other away supporters and I hope Cross-Country trains treat you better than they did me in both directions to and from Taunton. It really was their worst performance ever and that takes some doing. My complaint may take as long to write as your report on the Surrey game.

LOL has ordered me to go to support Somerset but I dislike Old Trafford so much nowadays that my support will be on You Tube. I always thought that I could never want anyone to beat Lancs but I think it is in Lancs interest ; they need to go down and even then I don’t think it will result in the removal of enough personnel to make a difference . Gloucestershire have proved you can recover post Benkenstein but he is one of a few who needs to go and Bungle says his job is safe. The hapless DOC Chilton even says it is the work that Benkenstein did last year that has improved Gloucestershire..

At least the weather is set fair I gather . Hope injuries from Sat aren’t too serious . I think you will at least break even Farmer ; surely even Lancs can’t lose in two days. I know strange things happen in cricket but everyone who goes thinks Lancs look a demoralised rabble. I think the Hampshire game could be the tough one.

Lancashire, who have lost their last three matches and are second from bottom in the championship, give a second game tomorrow to West Indian quickie Anderson Phillip. He was been signed for the final three matches of the season and took 2-101 in Lancashire`s innings defeat by Durham at Chester-le-Street last week.

Somerset have travelled without both George and Josh Thomas, who are playing for the Seconds in a four-day match with Hampshire 2nds at Taunton Vale.

Banton obviously out, but it looks like everyone else is expected to be available for OT - the club says Tabell “will train”, whatever that might mean.

I’d leave out Randell, Ball and either TKC or Goldsworthy from the named 14, though I doubt that’s what will happen.

Personally I'd have George Thomas in the squad, and the final 11 with all 4 of Shepton's suggested omissions not playing.
I'll wait now for TKC to be included and score a ton or two (hopefully)

Lancashire introduce 20-year old batsman Harry Singh, son of long-serving Indian Test player R. P. Singh, into their 14-man squad for the first time. They are without Phil Salt and Liam Livingstone, away with the England ODI squad against Australia, and pace bowler Luke Wood, who is playing in a 10-over tournament in Africa.

Squad: Jennings (c), Aspinwall, , Bailey, Balderson, Bell, Bohannon, Flintoff, Hartley, Hurst, Phillip, Singh, Stanley, Wells, Williams.

Meanwhile, Durham have confirmed that captain Scott Borthwick will miss this week`s key match with Surrey at The Oval with an elbow injury. They have signed Northamptonshire opener Emilio Gay on loan in his place. He was due to move to Durham next summer.

The squad for tomorrow is
Lewis Gregory, Andy Umeed, Tom Lammonby, Tom Abell, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Archie Vaughan, Lewis Goldsworthy, James Rew, Kasey Aldridge, Craig Overton, Josh Davey, Jack Leach, Brett Randell and Jake Ball.

One would assume they will continue with Archie and probably Andy Umeed as openers (TKC really hasn't done that job). Tom L and Tom A will be there with a Lewis G either side of James. One would then assume it's Craig, Josh Jack and Brett

Jake may be in for Josh TKC for Lewis G Jr maybe?

Well the side chosen is;

Umeed, Vaughan, Lammonby, Abell, TKC, Rew, Gregory, Aldridge, Overton, Leach Randell

If everyone is fit I find Kasey's choice over Davey a puzzle. They were always going to pick Randell because they've signed him to perform home & away. But if Gregory is semi crocked a consistent Davey would be a desired option to me.

Also I understand with Banton not available I see why TKC would be on a sheet as the 'shot maker'. However, at the moment, he simply isn't. Tom B has developed a variation of style in terms of format & TKC has less variation now than he had when he was signed He needs a winter of work of he is a white ball only option

At least Lewis is bowling early and we have a wicket though there was a drop first ball and we could do with saying 'goodbye' to Jennings early.

Of course we’d probably all prefer Kasey and Josh ahead of Randell.

Don’t start criticising Kasey because of his catching - he’s a superb fielder - that doesn’t change because he’s dropped one catch.

I'm all for Kasey playing but only if he is consistent with the ball as well as the bat which presently is a bit of a gamble. Good when it comes off, watching through the fingers when it's not and it's not a little too often presently when he might be your third seamer.

We needed to win this game.

We are in a great position to do so after day1

What we did t need was a bore draw.

19pts keeps us right in the mix.

Lancs produced a result pitch which we can't control.

How good is it to be still in the race with 7 days to go.

Enjoy the fact we are in the hunt maybe rather than find every negative possibility out of things.....

Not a good day for groundsmen at the ECB`s `precious` Test match grounds.

Aside from Old Trafford, which if it had been Somerset`s backyard there would have been an immediate points deduction for deliberately preparing a wicket for one type of bowling, 19 wickets fell in the day at Edgbaston (Warwick v Essex), where on Saturday capacity crowds were denied for the second year running of any significant stroke-play (surely the main aspiration of T20) by a dead wicket.

No penalty to come there either of course.

Personally, I thought only Craig Overton was close to his best in that morning session (although, for all I know this could have been Randell’s best).

That, combined with the first ball drop of KKJ enabled them to lunch at 108/4 when conditions were, in my view, more of the 70/5 variety.

Not surprised that our batters struggled on the green surface.

Pitch might flatten out which could help us but, either way, we are likely to fall further behind Surrey, who will surely pick up multiple batting points versus a severely weakened Durham attack.

Did Somerset drop the championship with the first ball of the match at Old Trafford?

That drop might go on to cost us this match (and might not) but it is scoring fewer batting bonus points than Surrey (which looks hugely probable) that will make it even harder to win the CC from here.

Thought Lewis bowled well this morning as did Kasey - we got the decent one today😁👍🏼 Still not overly one way or the other about Randell.

Anthony said we were mostly got out rather than gave it away. The changes in the line-up can also @#$%& up flow etc

Stand by the questions from this morning. Understand the idea of Umeed & Vaughan though it may go the way of many others. No idea what the basis for TKC instead of Goldsworthy with Tom's present level of output having made a decision about LG last week.

None of these guys can really show what they can do if they find themselves somewhere new each week.

I didn’t see the collapse from 40-1 until 7 down but I do agree with earlier posts about Davey being a better choice than Randell and LG junior being better than TKC.

Getting Keaton Jennings in second innings is massive . Bohannon is a really good bat and Balderson pretty good but both wretchedly out of form and the best bat Lancs have otherwise is Matty Hurst .

I agree with WSM that it can still be done. I think Somerset would always have needed Essex winning against Surrey next week . I must admit , both at local league level and County Championship level I can never be bothered with all the point ramifications even though I know they are important. I just see games of cricket as things to be won. I think as far as lost points are concerned, I more regret the appalling strategy against Tom Curran last week and the poor batting on the first evening . However, who knows , if the tail had batted decently then , might have run out of time on last day.

Although Randell looked lively in his first spell last week and I felt was underused, overall I think he fits my theory of only getting overseas in if they are world class or can give a whole season.

I just hope that in two weeks time, that first innings drop of Jennings isn’t crucial. Also hope that damned game of football ….

Agree with Grockle . Will be tougher than the Warwickshire chase even if the wicket is completely dead because of the weight of the situation.

I don’t know the law well enough but can the bowler umpire intervene and give a run out at the opposite end when it is so obvious?

Won’t be able to watch today with a couple of work commitments but will keep eye on score. No mixed priorities as relegation is a necessary though not sufficient requirement for a Lancs improvement.

I can’t see us winning this by way of application, in the sense of the patient Lancs style batting, Grockle.

BUT - after another flattening with the heavy roller, maybe this might be flat enough to allow our guys to play the attacking style they prefer and prosper?

If we get set 350?

I say we either get them in 85 overs or we lose.

Can’t see any world in which we are patient enough to bat 110+ overs under pressure, in the way that Lancs have done.

What on earth has happened to Andy Umeed this season ? At the beginning of the season I was very keen on him getting a start as a solid opener. Since then he seems to have had a long sequence of crashing innings as though he was auditioning for a t20 position. I don't get it.

Re: Gathering red roses in autumn? - Lancashire away
Posted by: Grockle (IP Logged)

Last season there was a feeling that he had been told he needed to push on in his innings. He got out to rash shots in the friendlies flashing where it had been unusual. He then had a phenomenal Metrobank and was solid in the middle order in the later 4 days.

He's not been consistently tried and has usually partnered our least likely opening partner in TKC. He seems to drop back into solidity in the 50 over where the confidence must be higher. He IS susceptable to the early moving ball but once past that can be a real problem for sides

Is he an answer to our problem? Not at the moment. Should he get a run with Archie as partner? Doubt it will happen. Is he presently one of many looking at 4/5 in the line-up? Probably.

There's a X (Twitter) clip doing the rounds. If you're going to drive for 4, make sure you don't miss

Oh well, another year, another disappointment.

Hopefully Sunday will give some joy.

Well, we've taken it to the wire - almost. With a team/squad that most of us probably thought might struggle this season they've done really well with some youngsters really coming to the fore.

Perhaps we can get close and even do it tomorrow - to be fair this team doesn't really seem to know when it's beaten.

Just hope we haven't completely runout of energy and mental strength for the final this Saturday or the last CC game.

If only they hadn't played football that morning!

I'd like to see us do our utmost to keep all our young players for next season and release TKC to allow that

James Rew holds the key to this, the game isn't over yet. At least Farmer got value from his advance 4 day ticket purchase

Agree Somerset LLL. Rew well capable of 100 ; usually gets them against Lancs and Craig and Lewis well capable of 40 each. Maybe Randell will be the hero. Must admit, I would prefer Davey there.

Whatever indignant pretence to the contrary Jason Kerr might feign, almost nobody expect this squad to challenge for the CC - probably only Big Jim did so!!!!

So, it's been a good red ball season, with Taunton turned into a fortress.

Zero wins on our travels, however.

If England stick with Bash over Leachy and leave Archie alone for the forseeable, then one can see a route to being strong at home again, next year.

I think Andy H will have to bring Renshaw back again - what's the alternative, really?

I'd like to see Migael back as overseas paceman.

Here's how I'd phrase it:

If you're not Viv?

Don't try and hit the cover off good balls before you've played yourself in.

I think that's pretty fair!

I am sure that in my cricketing days I WAS Viv and so bowlers tried all the harder to remove me. Life's so unfair...

James Rew surely has the skills, maturity, ability and talent to open.

Yes, it's a lot to ask someone of his years to fulfill the opener & wk. positions, but Alec Stewart did so for England and James is wise way beyond his years.

He doesn't have to. We have Banton as well. In a couple of years we may also have his brother. Even TKC if he can adapt to red ball cricket

Congratulations Surrey. You won more games than us and deservedly are champions.

Although our side has many championship winning players, we have seen too many holes this season. Obvious weaknesses are an opener and the ability to bowl sides out.

I'm not sure who recommended Randall, but it didn't work out. Losing George Thomas is my biggest regret of the season

A very tame end to what had at times looked a good contest between two evenly matched sides.

Umeed, alas, does not resemble a first division batter - note that his one-day runs have mostly come against sides with reduced bowling strength. I do not agree with promoting Rew to the opening spot; let him concentrate on keeping and on his splendid middle-order batting. Goldsworthy is a better candidate and in my opinion Lammonby an even better one - he has almost always had to come in very early in recent matches. (apparently in Somerset's six most recent innings a wicket has fallen to the first or the second ball)

Today's end was an anti-climax but the side still deserves huge congratulations on a season that far exceeded most people's expectations,

The good news for me from today's disappointment is that I shall probably survive until this time next year, my intention being not to die until we have won the championship.

Agree with LOL and skittler . Think made at least two bad selections in this match but accept they know more about it than me. Feel very hollow at present .

I don’t suppose we should have been surprised . Before this match

“Somerset have an extraordinarily poor Championship record at Old Trafford considering some of the great cricketers who have played for them.

They have only ever won 8 times in Lancashire, once at Southport and 7 times at Old Trafford in 80 matches.

At OT the record is Lancs won 27, Somerset won 7, draws 22. Total matches 58”

At the moment , one positive is I don’t have to brave the trains next weekend. I was going to come for Sat and Sun if there was hope.

Hope there is some solace on Sunday.

Ahh well that didn't go the way the heart hoped but the head had probably already accepted. Thought there might be a bit more fight than that.

Now hope it doesn't colour the side for Sunday as our one trophy needs to come to us (if it does) courtesy of those who.gotbus to the final rather than those who abandoned that tournament to earn money elsewhere while leaving the hard graft of qualification to others who deserve early time in the spotlight however brightnthe ECB will alliw it to be.

Stat of the day:

Tom Curran (who spent his day gloating vs our fans on Instagram) has spent as many games banned by the ECB for disgraceful intimidation of an umpire (4 games) as he has made appearances for the Brown Caps in their hat-trick of title triumphs.

Strongly agree with LoL viz not giving Rew the opening slot and, unless somebody else is signed as keeper (or his brother is promoted to do it) I also happen to think there's no chance of it happening.

For anyone who missed out on the pain of the last day, all half an hour or so of it, here is a report on it, written through the fog of a vicious cold I have had since the end of the first day. A short day so a short report, at least for me.
