Barnsley 0 – 2 Newcastle

  Barnsley fought bravely against high flying Newcastle but simply weren’t good enough as they suffered another defeat to the better team.  

The reds were possibly expected to lose this encounter but despite Newcastle being the better team, the two goals that Barnsley conceded were very disappointing to say the least.

The start to the season had given reds fans cause for optimism but it is now obvious that Barnsley face a relegation battle this season. That was inevitable really wasn’t it?

It has to be said that the reds gave it a good go against Newcastle but the difference in class showed in the end.

Dwight Gayle was the main difference between the sides as he netted both goals for the visitors as the reds suffered lapses of concentration.

Coming away with another defeat was painful enough but the most disappointing thing to be taken from this game was the way Adam Hammill reacted to being substituted, more on that incident later.

The first half was dominated by defences and chances were scarce for both teams with James Bree having the best effort for the home team.

The second half came to life early on as just three minutes in Barnsley poorly failed to clear a corner and Gayle popped up at the far post to put the visitors ahead.

There still wasn’t much between the two sides and both teams continued to create half chances with Morsy firing inches over the bar for the reds.

In the 67^th minute the game was sealed as Gayle scored again with goalkeeper Adam Davies inexplicably coming off his line when we had covering defenders. The actions of Davies meant that there was only one outcome, had he stayed on his line or come initially instead of hesitating then it would have been much more difficult to score.

Newcastle were then able to see out the game with ease. The reds kept plugging away attempting to get back in to it but the gulf in class was all too evident on this occasion.
