Barnsley ins and outs and the January transfer window.
Barnsley have already been busy in the transfer market this January and I expect a lot more ins and outs before the window slams shut at the end of the month.
In already has come striker Carlton Morris from Norwich City. At 6 foot 2 he is the big man centre forward that most fans having been calling for but his goal record leaves a lot to be desired. At 25 he has been around the block a bit in terms of the sheer number of clubs he has played for, mainly on loan. But 22 goals in 147 appearances mainly in the lower leagues and Scotland is far from impressive.
I’d guess that his all round game must be pretty good in terms hold up play etc which is why we have signed him and hopefully they see raw talent that can still be coached in to an end product even at the age of 25.
Also incoming is Liam Kitching, a 21 year old left back from Forest Green who can also play centre half. Whether he will be competing for the left wing back role or left sided centre half remains to be seen. But if he is ready for Championship football then we certainly have a lot of options across that back five.
Out goes Elliot Simoes, on loan to Donny for the rest of the season. I see this as a good move for all parties. Hopefully he can get regular football and help Doncaster’s promotion push and come back to us a better player who can compete for a first team spot.
The big news of the window so far for me however is that Matty James won’t be returning and has instead joined Coventry on loan for the rest of the season.
Barnsley are adamant that is was their decision not to take James again as Styles, Kane and Palmer are all ready to be given the opportunity to prove themselves in midfield.
Whilst I agree with the above statement and I also don’t think James pulled up any trees in the games he played, but was getting more up to speed the more he played, I am not sure that is truth for not bringing James back and this is just Ismael giving the players a confidence boost.
It seems odd to continue to pick James above those three if Ismael believes they are ready to play and there was no intention of bringing James back. Unless that is there was a clause in the loan deal saying he had to start so many games?
Perhaps that Coventry were willing to pay more towards his wages was the reason or that James himself wasn’t happy with our style of play so wanted to go elsewhere. Not that I am criticising our style of play, after all it is getting a lot more wins than losses, but at times it can be a thankless task in midfield as it can get bypassed in a lot of games.
Only time will tell whether or not it was a mistake not to bring James back. I don’t think it was as long as we keep Mowatt and Styles who are both reported to be attracting interest from Championship clubs with Brentford poised to make a bid for Styles.
We need to keep both of those if we are to maintain this current form. Mowatt being out of contract at the end of the season could mean that we are tempted to cash in and if an offer too good to refuse comes in for Styles then …… well, we know the story. We’ve been here before. Hopefully it will be different this time round but I fear another repeat.
