Barnsley Visit Stockport

Barnsley are to visit Edgeley Park to face Stockport for a Saturday midday kick-off in League One.

The Reds will be hoping to build on a very impressive 5-0 dismantling of Luton Town last Saturday at Oakwell.

On Saturday, both Patrick Kelly and Jack Shepherd came off in the second half with knocks. On this, Hourihane said: “Yeah, all fine. They needed a couple of extra days recovery to come over a couple of knocks and bruises but nothing over the top.”

Hourihane also confirmed Jon Russell has been back in training this week after returning from international duty with Jamaica.

As we head towards the festive period, the fixture list begins to ramp up as Barnsley have more games including EFL Trophy and FA Cup fixtures.

The Reds will have 7 fixtures to play in December and Hourihane expressed the importance of needing everyone in the squad as the schedule gets tougher.

“We are gonna need everyone in the building for sure so everyone's gotta be ready and everyone's gotta take their opportunity when called upon.”

As for the hosts Stockport, they started off the season impressively and they do currently sit in 5th place.

However, they have lost their last two league games 3-0 at home to Luton and away to Peterborough respectively.

Stockport have had an incredible upwards trajectory in recent years after financial issues saw them drop into the 6th tier in 2013.

After six seasons in the sixth tier, the Hatters were promoted to the National League in 2019.

They returned into the EFL in 2022, before winning League Two and returning to the third tier in 2024.

Current boss Dave Challinor was appointed in November 2021, and impressively Stockport have never finished outside the playoffs in a season where Challinor has been in charge.

Stockport are missing influential midfielder Oliver Norwood through injury, who is arguably one of the best players in the division.

Barnsley and Stockport have faced off 95 times in the past, with Barnsley winning 32 and losing 30.

Last season, the two sides drew 1-1 at Oakwell in September and The Hatters won 2-1 at Edgeley Park in February.
