Jon Russell has departed Barnsley to join Mansfield on loan until the end of the season.

The 25-year-old midfielder has six months left on his contract so may have played his last game for Barnsley.

Russell scored 11 goals and got two assists last season in League One and many expected him to be a part of Hourihane’s plans going forward.

However, he has struggled for game time this season and has found it hard to break into the team.

The midfielder probably lacks the mobility to play in Hourihane’s system, however, has shown himself to be a useful player at League One level, often being a presence in the opposition box and managing to get on the end of crosses.

He gets regular minutes for Jamaica internationally, and he will be hoping to be involved in their World Cup qualifier on March 26th against New Caledonia, and if they progress, The Reggae Boyz will play one of Bolivia or Suriname for a place at the World Cup in 2026.
