Barnsley visit Luton

The Reds lost 1-0 at Stevenage midweek, although they could have been on the end of a heavy defeat if it wasn’t for a few disallowed goals for the hosts. 

Barnsley looked poor when attempting to play out from the back, often gifting the hosts the ball in dangerous positions. 

You must wonder if a possession-based style will still be adopted next season under a new manager, considering how it has unravelled The Reds at times this campaign. 

On team news ahead of the trip to Luton, soon to depart head coach Conor Hourihane said: “Josh Earl is OK. The million dollar question is Didzy (McGoldrick). We’re umming and arring. We will train on Thursday then we will see how he reacts.” 

Hourihane also said he was thinking about the best interests of the club in the future when asked on why he decided to include Georgie Gent and Kelechi Nwakali in the squad on Tuesday. 

The duo have not played much under the Irishman, especially Nwakali who made his first appearance of the season against Stevenage. 

Barnsley currently sit 13th in League One and can no longer mathematically finish in the top six or get relegated. 

As for opponents Luton, they are involved in a fight for a playoff spot, as they are currently 7th and three points off sixth placed Stevenage and fifth placed Stockport County who have a game in hand. 

The Hatters are currently unbeaten in 10 matches in all competitions, including an EFL Trophy final victory at Wembley against Stockport. 

They won away at relegated Rotherham in midweek. 

Luton are managed by former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, who replaced Matt Bloomfield in October. 

The Hatters have former Barnsley players Mads Andersen, Jordan Clark and Devante Cole in their ranks. 

Barnsley beat Luton 5-0 at Oakwell in late November, in what has been their best performance of the season so far. 

The two clubs have played 66 times over the years, with The Reds winning 29 matches and losing 27.
