Motherwell battled through to a League Cup Quarter Final after seeing off Brechin City with a struggle last night.

Motherwell battled through to the League Cup quarter finals against a spirited Brechin side last night.

It looked as though Well had made the best start when they took the lead just after the quarter of an hour mark. A Ross Forbes corner was met powerfully by the head of Jonothan Page to power past veteran Craig Nelson in the home goal.

Not long afterwards Rory McAllister was given a great chance to score when he was put clean through by Craig Molloy but the striker could only hit the body of the advancing Darren Randolph.

The second half saw the home team start the better once again, and after missing a couple of early chances they were punished when Page made it two nil. Once again he rose to head a corner powerfully past Nelson, this time from a Hateley delivery.

Molloy and McAllister spurned more fine chances for the home side, while Nelson pulled off a couple of fine saves to deny Nick Blackman and Alan Gow.

In the end the home side could feel hard done to, but they were punished for not taking their chances while Motherwell were clinical from two set pieces.

It is also time to dust down the old cliche that getting through is all that matters in cup football, and when we lift the Cup in March no one will care how we played last night!
