Saunders called up to full squad

Young full back Steven Saunders has been promoted from the Under 21 squad to the full squad friendly with the Faroes tomorrow night.

Craig Levein made the decision to promote Saunders, along with call ups for another nine players today, after a series of call offs.

The Saunders decision does seem a strange one to me, given he is the least experienced defender in our side. Two of his colleagues may have expected a call up ahead of him, Steven Hammell and Mark Reynolds.

Hammell already has one cap to his name and has been consistent over 300 games or so at Motherwell.

It is also baffling what Reynolds has to do to get a call up. There is an argument he isn’t an International player but this argument is blown out of the water by the inclusion of Saunders along with Gary Kenneth and Paul Caddis.

It therefore comes as no surprise that only about 6000 tickets have been sold for a friendly that is becoming more and more meaningless….
