In a sensational game at Tyencastle Motherwell came back from three goals down to take a point.
There was no hint of the excitement to come in the opening stages with neither side threatening until the 20th minute. An Ian Black cross was flicked on by Suso Santana for Rudi Skacel to head at goal but Darren Randolph pulled off a stunning save.
The home side took the lead on 25 minutes through a soft penalty award. Saunders pushed Stevenson as they waited for a corner to come in and Willie Collum pointed to the spot despite the ball not actually being in play at the time. Craig Thomson took the kick and left Randolph with no chance with a well hit spot kick.
Stevenson then hit the post minutes later before Skacel doubled the lead on the 36th minute. Skacel combined with Stephen Elliot at the edge of the box before going on to hammer a shot high past Randolph from 10 yards out.
Motherwell came back into the game after this and Kello did well to keep out a Saunders header and then to stop a Murphy shot at the front post. As the half time whistle went things were beginning to look better for Well.
Despite that it was Hearts who started the better, Stevenson could’ve scored a third after 49 minutes but his shot from a tight angle bounced off both posts before bouncing clear. The third goal was only delayed until the 53 minutes, a Suso cross was met by the unmarked Stevenson who bulleted a header home from close range.
Two minutes later, we did pull one back, Steve Jones left a number of Hearts defenders for dead before picking out the head of Sutton with his cross with the big Englishman leaving Kello helpless.
On 58 minutes we were only a goal behind, a driven Tom Hateley free kick from the left deceived Kello at his front post and went straight in, despite many believing Sutton had got a touch.
Kello then pulled off two great saves to deny Hateley and Jeffers from long range, and he then had to stay big at his front post to deny sub Maurice Ross. We followed this up a Jones shot that hit the base of the post as we went looking for an equaliser.
Then in the 89th minute the equaliser did come, a Gavin Gunning cross from the left was met by a deft head flick from Sutton at the near post to secure an unlikely point.
