NUFC Player Ratings v Chelsea

Steve Harper was judged Man Of The Match for his performance against Chelsea this afternoon, by Tyne-Talk's resident player rater Wasim4nufc. Read on to see how the rest of the team faired during Alan Shearer's first game in charge.......................
** Please Note I did not watch the entire game, so these ratings may be a bit different to what you had in mind. **
Player Ratings
Steve Harper (6.5) - Made a few good saves, and couldn't have been blamed for either of their goals.
Ryan Taylor (5) - Out of position for their 2nd goal, and his set pieces weren't great either.
Fabricio Coloccini (2) - Was absolutely poor, and he was at fault for their first goal, while he also struggled with route one balls.
Habib Beye (6) - Filled in decently at the back, but his positioning could have been better.
Jose Enrique (5) - Did not get enough balls into their box, while he struggled with Kalou's pace.
Jonas Gutierrez (6) - Tried hard, but again, did not get enough balls into the box. He did look like one of our more dangerous players though.
Nicky Butt (6.5) - He looked decent in midfield, but didn't really have good support from Nolan.
Kevin Nolan (5) - Not really the player he once was, and was rightfully taken off. Would be lucky to start the next game.
Peter Lovenkrands (N/A) - Went off injured, which was a big blow.
Obafemi Martins (5.5) - Looked rusty, and wasn't the threat we know he can be.
Michael Owen (5) - Wasn't given many chances, and his deflected shot should have been given as a goal. We need someone more physical up front, as these two are not going to win us matches at Stoke for example.
Substitutes
Damien Duff (5) - Its his silly pass backwards that led to their 1st goal, and he never really got a decent ball into the box.
Danny Guthrie (6.5) - Had a good impact when coming on, and it was no surprise that some good chances were created when he was on.
Andy Carroll (N/A) - Not on long enough
Positives
* None that I can think of, perhaps Guthrie's return?
Negatives
* We are now falling further away from the pack and safety is getting harder and harder now.
* We have two away games next.
* Coloccini was horrific at the back.
Man of the Match: Steve Harper (no one really stood out for us).

i think over all its bit on the low side with the ratings especially jonas ok he did not pose a major attcking threat but he put a end to ashley coles threat from the wing and never stopped working for the cause colo's 2 if well justifed and i think its harsh on owen and oba as they had nothing to work with no service at all from are midfield we really need barton back soon as possible and rayn taylor looked like he has never had any quality and needs a kick up the ass as he is better than he showed today but if we work as hard as we did for 60 mins at stoke the game could be over by then and we should have a goal or two's cushion and be able to bring home the points

Thanks for your input Senyabtoon, I agree with you in that we need Barton playing as soon as possible, because he is the one player who could spark things for us. My ratings may have been low, as I thought we should have done a little better, with the atmosphere being as electric as it was.

Agreed, we had very little creativity on show today and gave the ball away far too often.
Colo 2 agreed - needs to be rested - hopefully Bassong/Taylor partnership next week.
Jonas put in a good shift and was actually spotted in the oppositions box late on! Opposite wingers need to get into the box when the ball comes in. We dont get enough players in or around the oppositions box.
Taylor's deliveries today were very poor but who else can take them? Has Jonas ever taken a corner for us?
Didnt really expect anything from today... but wish the commentators would stop calling Shearer the new Messiah!
We still have time to turn this around and if Shearer didnt know before today what a task that is...he does now.

Didn't expect anything from this game so Shearer's managerial career starts next week properly in my eyes.
Looking to next week we could have certain personnel problems sorted with S. Taylor, Bassong, Barton and Viduka all possibly returning. A defence of Beye, S. Taylor, Bassong and Enrique with midfield of Jonas, Barton, Guthrie and Duff looks good to me. Although that may be a bit unlikely.
Hopefully Lovenkrands' injury isn't too serious, though;

We need depth in the squad. Truth is, Colccini is on abysmal form right now. But because we have no alternative, he plays.

quite right tunyc, we're waiting for shearer to inspire the present squad, none of whom have shown enough quality this season. forget chopping and changing personnel, we need to hope standards rise throughout the whole playing squad to somewhere near what they should have been all season. we have the players, its up to the various off field staff to get them playing.

Think 2 for Colo is a bit harsh. You have to be going some to get a 2. Yeah, crap for the first goal but why did Duff have to play it back. It wasnt his fault for the second goal and we had kept a clean sheet going in at half time. Its no excuse but I think we have sucked all the confidence out of him.
Taylor looked more comfortable at right back but he just isnt good enough. Beye is far better and Taylor is no winger either.
Dont agree with Enrique. Thought he has continued his good form lately. He was not afraid of the ball and was always ready to take it and try to push on which put our W$%K midfield to shame.
Jonas, again a lot of running but he goes down to easy and no end product.
Butt was ok, got a couple of tackles in but his legs have well and truely gone.
Nolan does not look like the same player. He looks like he is carrying weight and was just wandering around. Very disapointing as thought he was a good signing. Hope he snaps out of it.
Duff, I cant believe how bad a player he has become.
Owen was up for it in first half, Martins didnt seem bothered. Niether had any service.
Plus points, thought Guthrie looked good coming on. We have missed both him and Barton so much. Both these players can not only pass but can hold onto the ball for longer than two seconds.
Bad points, thought atmosphere at match was canny until they scored then it all went quiet. Then half the ground emptied with 10-15 minutes left. Disgrace after all the Shearer hype.

Terrible performance against a Chelsea side that didnt get out of first gear.
Beye was good as was Enrique, the rest were hopeless and did not even try to run their socks off.
As all season our problem is creativity and as long as we continue with Jonas and Duff we are screwed.

totally disagree about jonas on the tackling side of things if you had seen some of the tv replays he could of been sent of for some of his lunges the terry one springs to mind but anyway nice to see ya back been on ya hols bart ?

The lad is 17 years old, and doing well in the reserves, and while Utd are in a massive title race, his manager still had the confidence in his ability to potentially change the match. My thinking is, surely with players like Duff and Jonas (according to some) not performing, why don't we give Kazenga Lua-Lua or Nile Ranger a chance. If other clubs can do it, why can't we?

Was at the reserves tonight to watch a cracking match finish 2-1 to us over Man City with a brace for Carrol.
The best game Ive seen at SJP all season. Drop the dross and get some of the young'uns in.
P.S. Smithy played very well and will probably start against stoke.

Agree with you Wasim. Players like duff just dont give a @#$%&. Before coming to the town he was one of my favourites but cant believe what he is like now. Its like he has come here to retire (with others).
Youngsters wanting to make a name can really change a game.
On the other hand Man U's youngters are always a cut above. They finished the game with two 17 year old forwards.
The toon have never given young players much of a chance. Even this season JFK played Cacapa away to Fulham saying that he is better than Bassong (who had never really played granted). Bassong has showed how much he knows about football.
