Chris Hughton has paid tribute to his skipper Nicky Butt after the 35 year old announced that today's game would be his last for the club at St James' Park. Hughton has given two interviews to the official website regarding Butt's departure, whilst Nicky Butt also said his thanks to the club.

Yesterday Hughton said;

"Nicky has been a wonderful footballer, a tremendous servant to this football club and a model professional throughout his career.

I would like to thank him for all that he has done both for myself and for Newcastle United. Any young player trying to make their way in the game should look to players such as Nicky Butt as an example of how to be a professional footballer.

It is fitting that his final season with the club should be one in which he captains us to promotion and I would like to wish him all the very best for the future."

Today he said;

"We are delighted to have had him for the period of time we have had him. He is of an age where it gets more difficult, but he has always been a great servant to this club.

For those who know Nicky and how he trains well every day, he is a great example for any young player we have.

He's 35 years of age and he trains well every day. He is able to do that because he is a quality player.

It was fitting that he came on today and was able to win us the penalty."

Nicky Butt said;

"I have had a wonderful six years here, ever since Sir Bobby Robson brought me to the club in 2004. But this summer I will be moving on.

It will always be a club that holds a special place in my heart. And I’d like to thank the players, staff and fans for everything they’ve done for me over the years.

I hope I will be back as a spectator in the future and see the club lift more silverware.

It’s a brilliant feat, now we’ve done it.

Many people were saying we were favourites but last summer some people were also tipping us for relegation again.

I don’t think many outside this football club would have tipped us to win the league."

Mentioned in the paper today that Keane might want him at Ipswich. Not sure he wants to carry on but wish him all the best whatever he does.
