Thompson Leaves Newcastle United

Newcastle United have confirmed the departure of reserve team coach Alan Thompson. The 36 year old ends a two year stint at the club, where he started as Academy Coach before being promoted to coach the reserves and is likely to return to Celtic in a coaching role where he spent many years as a player.

A club statement issued earlier today read;

"We can confirm that Alan Thompson has left his role with the club by mutual consent.

Alan served Newcastle United exceptionally well as academy coach during the 2008-09 season, and as reserve team coach last season.

The club would like to thank Alan for his commitment to player development and coaching at Newcastle.

Newcastle United wish him every success in his future career."

Ideally we should've given Shearer a position like this. It won't happen now because we threw him in straight in at the deep end, and maybe it would've undermined the manager's position anyway...

Either way, would've been nice to have put some thought in to a decision like this instead of throwing him to the dogs like we did.

I think it would be a great idea to bring in a geordie or somebody who played for us. They will then know all about the club. The good, the bad and the Ashley

I would like to have Roeder back to be honest. He did a good job with the kids and would probably be working with a few he brought through.

If not him Carver would be good but would he settle for less than assistant manager.

Roeder would do a good job. With eventually seeing some talent come through, this has to be the right appointment otherwise we could set the toon youth back a few years
