Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton has admitted an interest in Bolton Wanderers defender Jlloyd Samuel, but has denied a bid has been made for the 29 year old. On Wednesday it was reported that Newcastle had had a £1million bid turned down by Bolton, but Hughton has rejected these claims.

He told The Evening Chronicle;

"I can't say there hasn't been a phone call to see what the situation is. But it has not gone as far as a bid, definitely not.

He would have been probably one of a few players we've enquired about from that club even.

At the moment we are in the process of finding out the availability of certain players and he was one of them.

But I can say that it is nothing more than that at this stage."

The Trinidad and Tobago International joined Bolton on a free transfer from Aston Villa in 2007 but has just 12 months left on his current contract. He has made 83 appearances for the club, never scored and was played just once after Owen Coyle was given the managers job in the middle of last season.
