Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Aston Villa

By Tyne-Talk
August 21 2010

Newcastle United host Aston Villa in their first game at St James' Park of the season. With a 3-0 defeat in the opening game of the season against Manchester United, Chris Hughton's side will be looking for a more positive result against Villa, who won their opening game 3-0 against West Ham United.

A midweek game for Villa which ended in a 1-1 draw may give Newcastle the advantage in tomorrow's lunch time kick off.

Both sides go into the game with a number of injuries;

Newcastle are without Steven Taylor (dislocated shoulder), Leon Best (ankle), Danny Simpson (ankle), Sol Campbell (fitness) and Dan Gosling (knee), whilst Peter Lovenkrands (groin) and Danny Guthrie (knee) who both missed last weekend's match are both hoping to get the opportunity to feature as they near full fitness.

Manager less Aston Villa, who currently have caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald in charge are without Agbonlahor (hamstring), Cuellar (hamstring), Collins (calf), Delph (knee), Sidwell (Achilles) and Weimann (ankle), whilst John Carew (knee) is looking at a return from his injury.

Richard Dunne will return from suspension whilst Brad Friedel, Luke Young and Ashley Young are all looking for starting places and Stephen Ireland is set to make his debut.

Games between these two sides hold many memories for Newcastle United, namely playing Villa at the end of the 2008/09 season then being relegated and also Newcastle's last home defeat against Villa at St James' Park in 2005 where Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer were both sent off after fighting with each other on the pitch.

Fact: Newcastle United are unbeaten in their last 4 games against Aston Villa at St James' Park.

Fact: Aston Villa had the 3rd best away record in the Premier League last season with 32 points behind only Chelsea (34) and Manchester United (36).

Referee: Martin Atkinson Assistant referees: Dean Mohareb & Patrick Keane

Fourth official: Stuart Atwell

I'm looking forward to watching the match on ESPN. I reckon it will be a draw.

Changed my mind,- as far as I can see there are only 2 Newcastle games scheduled to be shown on ESPN between now and November. So shan't be wasting my money.

Link for today's game, would be appreciated.

Teams:
Newcastle – Steve Harper, James Perch, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Wayne Routledge, Alan Smith, Joey Barton, Jonas Gutierrez, Kevin Nolan, Andy Carroll.

Aston Villa – Brad Friedel, Luke Young, Richard Dunne, Ciaran Clark, Stephen Warnock, Ashley Young, Stilian Petrov, Marc Albrighton, Stewart Downing, Stephen Ireland, John Carew.

I'm quite disappointed to see the same team that started against Man Utd. Thought Guthrie would come in along with Lovenkrands but now Guthrie isn't even on the bench!

Playing 4-5-1 here is just ridiculous, it just shouts that we will want to spoil their game rather than trying to cause them problems.

Cheers for the links Wasim

I would have liked to see a 4-4-2 at home and then go 4-5-1 away, unless Lovernkrands plays in the attcking midfielders role.

If people are not fully fit, it is better resting them for one more game rather than risk a bigger injury

Brilliant first half.

Awful penalty from Carew.

Great goal from Barton.

Our short passing game has been very pleasing, we look good.

Jonas and Enrique linking very well down the left.

Unbelievable I would have taken a draw at kick off, we murdered them after the break, very pleased,

Anyone notice Moyes was watching us for the second time in a week?

wonder who he's keeping an eye on?

The key is the home form, and that maybe sent a statement out to other clubs for when they come up here. We need to play the counter attack football away from home and on this form we can easily do it.

Well done to the toon, and you were bloody great

the guardian reckon moyes has been watching smith, mighty. we'll see though, they are another club with money issues, i dont know whether they would match his wages. another day for that though.
still cant believe todays result, or the fact that we played so much great stuff. maybe this year wont be so bad...

Im not sure CH will let anyone go at the moment. Maybe Smith might go in January if the new lad settles in.

Not having a pop but can you imagine the goals that Carroll would get if we had more coming from the wings. Both put in decent shifts today but we know that crossing is not Jonas' game. A Nobby or Robert pinging balls for him to attack would be great.

Was a great atmosphere today. I dont think anybody could have imagined that score but the feeling I got is that the fans still dont expect too much this season. Its great to not ge carried away. Love the spirit. Carroll is a beast, Barton is loving it and both Williamson and Colo looked good.

IF the new Ivorian kid is meant to free us to sell Smith, I'm all for it. We can get the best fee we'll ever get out of Smith now and the team will get younger. Win-win.
