Player Ratings v Blackpool (H)

Tyne-Talks resident player rater Wasim4nufc has voted Fabricio Coloccini as Man Of The Match for his performance against Blackpool at St James' Park yesterday afternoon. Despite the 2-0 defeat, both Mike Williamson and Hatem Ben Arfa also managed to pick up good scores. Read on to see how the rest of the team faired.
Player Ratings
Steve Harper (6) - Apart from picking the ball out of the net twice, he didn't have that much work to do.
James Perch (6) - Was troubled by Varney for large parts of the game and yet again got another booking. He's one away from a one match ban now. He did manage to go forward more in the second half though.
Fabricio Coloccini (7) - It was a steady game from him. Conceding twice does make it look worse, for our defence but it wasn't as bad as the scoreline suggests.
Mike Williamson (7) - Unlucky not to have scored in the first half and like his centre back partner he was steady for most parts of the game.
Jose Enrique (6.5) - A mixed game from Enrique today. He made some good runs going forward but his final ball was lacking the desired outcome and he also gave the ball away a few times too many.
Wayne Routledge (5.5) - I may not have watched the whole match but he was largely anonymous today. He was rightfully substituted as he was starting to get frustrated. We needed more from him.
Alan Smith (5) - Unfortunately today was not his day. He foolishly gave away the penalty while he was also caught giving away silly fouls and it came as no surprise when he was the first to be substituted. I'd expect Tiote to start next week.
Joey Barton (6.5) - Along with Smith, he did not control things in midfield as we'd hope. He had an improved second half though after a first half in which he gave the ball away far too much. Perhaps could have done better when through on goal but that may be being a bit too critical.
Jonas Gutierrez (6.5) - He lacked the final ball, but one cannot fault him for his effort. He was on the ball a lot more than Routledge and did cause Blackpool a few problems.
Kevin Nolan (5.5) - Much like Routledge, he didn't feature enough on attack. What worries me, is that Hughton doesn't seem prepared to substitute him when he has an off day like he did today.
Andy Carroll (6.5) - It was a day where he lacked good service consistently but he was at blame for trying to take too long when through on goal which could have given us an equaliser early in the second half. He was denied late on with a better effort but there will be days where he won't score so I can't be too critical on him.
Substitutes
Peter Lovenkrands (6.5) - Seemed to have a good impact when coming on and one could argue he should have been on a bit earlier.
Hatem Ben Arfa (7) - Some good touches by the Frenchman and I'll be looking to start him next week. Why he was only given 17-18 minutes is beyond me.
Shola Ameobi (6) - He didn't really make an impact but then again he wasn't on for too long.

I don't mean to nitpick. I appreciate the work you put into this but I imagine you want the ratings to start a discussion...
