Perch Defends 4 Cards In 4 Games

It's pretty clear to me that he's not a dirty player (though Wenger would probably think so). He's just off the pace in his first season in the top flight. Considering we've played teams with the quality of Manchester Utd and Villa, I'm not surprised he's been late with tackles. I'm looking forward to getting Simpson back so there's competition at the position but going forward we need something better at RB than either of those guys.

I agree, it would be good in January to bring in a top right back if we could afford one

I can't see us buying another right back, less than 6 months after we just signed one and have 3 in the squad.

I don't think Perch was bought to be a dedicated RB. He's a utility man, and right now RB is where he's needed. I believe that's why we kept Raylor, for insurance in case Perch was a flop. If a better option is available on loan in January I wouldn't be surprised if we took him and either sell or loan out Raylor. I have no idea what role in the squad CH envisions him having. It'll be interesting to see the lineup for the game against Chelski.

I dont think we will look to buy another RB. Probably not even next season if we stay up. We have three of a similar standard and age and there is room for improvement.

The main reason I wouldnt buy another RB though is the performance of Tavernier in pre season. He looked very good and is a lot younger than any of the other three. Would like to see him progress and start against Chelsea.

I don't think we will bring in a right back, but said it would be good, but if a good loan is out there I think it would be a good move, but the gaffer likes to put faith in people so I can't see it.

I think a lot will depend on the transfer policy next season on what happens this season, if we finish higher than expected and I think there is a chance, then Ashley may be tempted to splash the cash a bit, as it was expected that we wouldn't be able to buy somebody unless we sold first, which didn't happen

I agree about Tavernier; hopefully we can build from within all over the pitch. That's why I think we'd consider a loan.

BB-I don't think those guys other than Simpson have much room to improve. I can't see Raylor getting any faster or more physical and Perch can't change the fact that he hasn't specialized in any position as a professional.

I would agree with that, perch should be a player that gets used if we need him, Raylor does well when he gets in but not a top class player and I think Simpson needs to improve

Personally, I think Simpson is easily the number one choice. And we don't need to replace him because he has quite a bit of quality about him. Although he hasn't come up against PL opposition yet.

Raylor, as we seem to be calling him, is a massive liability defensively, despite his quality in the final third.

Perch is solid. I like him, I think he has done a good job and nobody has really made him look terrible yet.

Pity that Northern Ireland lad is right footed, he looks quite good. The cross for Ranger's goal and a few other moments throughout the match.

Simpson has 12 PL caps to his name, as well as 3 Champion's League, so he has experience, just not consistent experience.


Both Simpson and Perch have a lot of potential and are still raw. They've got the pace, just need some work. Simpson has the occasional mental lapse during the game, but gives up less free kicks, and is excellent going forward. Perch, on the other hand, takes a little while to get going, but only gets better and better as the game progresses. Hughton will done wonders for them, just as he has for Enrique, because he knows how to play full back (albeit on the left).

As for Ryan Taylor, he's off the pace. He's a great worker, has an amazing right foot (as one commentator said, the 20 yard direct freekick is essentially the same as a penalty for him), and he can pass/cross. As a player on the flank, he's too slow. He'd probably do best in a 4-2-3-1 as the right sided holding mid. Problem is, we have 5 players (Tiote, Smith, Barton, Guthrie, Gosling) who can also fill that spot on the pitch.

I don't want to see Ryan Taylor leave the club. I think he's good for the squad as he keeps his head down, works hard, and does his job. I just wish he didn't have two players ahead of him, with another young lad not far behind (Tavenier)

I wouldn't want us to lose anybody in the window, at the moment we have depth, and think with a bit of luck we could have quite a good season.

As it is such a short window, it is easy to somebody, but to find a better replacement is hard, especially as you always seem to get done on the transfer fees, unless the deals are sorted in advance

Maybe Best will go in January, but I actually think he'll be loaned before that. Ranger could be loaned out, too. Gosling's return has been pushed back to mid-January per physioroom. (We're down to 10th on the PL injury table!) So I don't think we'll move a CM, though that's the position where we have the most depth. Simpson's return could push someone out of the squad-likely either Raylor or Smith. But again, I think the injuries in the squad will dictate that we keep what we have.

Forgot about Best, I would let him go out on loan so he could maybe put himself in the shopping window for the summer

Ranger looked really good in the LC playing as a right winger. Should be interesting to see how he goes against Arsenal in a few weeks.

Six games, five yellow cards, a suspension, an OG and was beaten at the far post for Stoke's first yesterday as well.

I won't rip the kid. He was brought in to be a utility man and thrust in the starting XI at a tough position. It's not his fault he's overmatched and Stoke targeted him.

I hope Simpson can give more. If not, upgrading at that spot should be our first priority personnel-wise.

give the lad time, for a lad who has just moved clubs and has never played in the premiership then he could have done a lot worse, saying that Simpson will do a better job
