Simpson, Guthrie and best should all be fine by the end of the international break, so it's hardly a crisis. We do miss Steven Taylor and the experience of Harper. We deserve some luck with colocinni, if he is out for a month then at least half of that is an international break.

We miss Guthrie loads in my opinion, he offers us something different.

I dont think its the centre mid where we are missing though at the moment. Losing Arfa means no cover on the wings and no replacing Nolan if it ever needed to be done. He obviously gave us something different and Im gutted that it could be a long lay off before he really gets a chance to shine.

Positives though. From the first half that I watched Jonas really looked up for it and Tiote looks like he has settled straight in.

Gutted for him, he looked like he was going to be a top player for us. Will he play for us again? I'm assuming that no permanent move will now follow.

I'm guessing he is out for 6 or 7 months. So who knows, they may just send him back to France.

It said that he is out for 6 months. If we are wanting to sign him permantely then I would keep him at the club, as the loan fee has been paid so we are only talking about extra wages, when he came he said that he wanted to work with a club that cared for him, so why not show it. If we keep him let the medical staff work with him and have the coaches and manager regular see him, then he will want to stay longterm.

Obviously totally gutted for the lad, as he wanted to do well, but know is the time to look after him, plus it sends out the message for other players who may think that atleast we are a club that gives a sh@t unlike others

I wonder about the fee. There may be some sort of insurance to cover that-American sports teams always have these policies on players.

Real poseur in terms of what to do long-term. How are NUFC supposed to decide to buy him (for a significant fee, surely) after only getting to see him in 3 games during the loan period? Of course I think NUFC should stand by their players, but I have to think a permanent move is off and if so it's only appropriate to send him back to be treated by the club who holds his registration.

De Jong is a dirty muthafucka, and I hope I'm watching when he gets his.

De Jong has been withdrawn for the Holland squad because of this.

I can't see Marseille gaining anything from this as it would set a dangerous precedent.

Of course I'm ignoring the fact that De Jong is a complete @#$%& who should get everything that is coming to him.

However, I do think it's rather funny that people are talking about De Jong like he is some new breed of nasty player.

Roy Keane was ten times worse and has confirmed he deliberately set out to injure people on numerous occasions.

Shawcross broke Ramsey's Leg as well as knocking Adebayor out for 3 weeks with a tackle out of play. Danny Guthrie broke Craig Fagan's leg, in a much more brutal attack than De Jong's. The difference is not that De Jong did anything worse than other players have, but that he wasn't booked for it, nor for the one on Xabi Alonso in the WC Final.

When Shawcross broke Ramsey's leg, he was actually the player with initial control, but he went in hard, the ref originally waved safe then saw the break. Shawcross got sent off because of the severity of the blow, honestly, it was amazing that both of them didn't end up with broken legs.

The real fault is not with De Jong, regardless of his history, but with the officials. De Jong should have been immediately shown a red card. Yes De Jong got ball, but he went in two footed and followed through unnecessarily. Was there intent to injure, probably not, was it a bookable offense, absolutely. I guarantee that if Barton or Smith had made that tackle, he'd be suspended for a prolonged amount of time.

would we have stayed up in 08/09 if both beye and barton had been fit? remember, one more point could have saved us. a goal, or a clean sheet more than we got. lee cattermole put both these players out for months each. which means he relegated us. then signed for sunderland.

Good point. If we *ahem* have trouble at the end of the season, the kind of trouble where one point is huge-we're going to be looking at every 1-0 loss and every draw and wondering if HBA could have made the difference.

I have to disagree with you waffles. This is about De Jong. More than any other player I see these days, he just doesn't give a damn about hurting guys. Not that he sets out to do it, but avoiding it isn't a priority to him. He's broken two legs in six months and kicked Alonso in the chest along with myriad other offenses during the WC. Roy Keane is a fair comparison-another dirty, dirty @#$%&. Even Shawcross has earned a reputation for careless tackles-but he seems to have reflected on that a bit. You bring up Martin Taylor, however, which highlights the contrast. He's been playing pro football for 14 seasons. When did you ever hear of him injuring guys? De Jong does it all the time-it's not a coincidence. He's a dirty player. Cattermole is another dirty player. At a certain point, you gotta remember these are people on the field. Is winning so goddamn important that you'll make a limp for the rest of his life?

It was an obvious red card. When you lunge at someone two footed getting the ball with one foot is not a defence if you break the guy's leg with the other. Simple as that.

It like going up for a header. Winning the ball with your head and elbowing the guy in the face. You get sent off for elbowing the guy in the face, despite winning the ball. Same thing goes here.

I don't understand why some knobs are suggesting that winning the ball in one instance in some way excuses anything that comes after.

Absolutely right. I ref and I hear the complaint "I got the ball" all the time. For younger players, I use it as an opportunity to teach: you're responsible for your entire body and if your trailing foot takes out the opposing player after you get the ball, it's a foul. Older players I tell to beat it before they're sent off...

I hope he gets done by Marseille, the only problem will be is City will pay all the fine so the lad doesn't get punished. Their has to be a crack down as some of the tackles will finish peoples career, and it seems that the players who play for the big teams get away with everything and the players who are at the small clubs get punished. To me though 3 matches isn't enough and when you look at what that @#$%& at City has done recently with breaking legs and the world cup tackle then he needs to be kicked out for atleast 3 months with a hefty fine.

Paulo di Canio got a 12 match ban for pushing a ref, and there is no f@cking way that is worse than the De Jong tackle

I'm an ice hockey fan-the line between rough play and criminal violence has been defined in that sport here in NA. I think if footballers ran around with 4-foot-long pieces of lumber it would be better defined in this sport. Truth is, your body can be used as a weapon, too.

For the record, I don't think this tackle crossed that line-it wasn't assault, just completely insensitive to the likelihood of injury. Still, the idea that a certain level of violence on the field is criminal should be part of the dialog.

defo more the referee to blame for this occasion but it does bring up a more criminal side of football and in this specific case, a more criminal side of Nigel De Jong. He has had 3 or 4 occasions now where his tackles have made international headlines for the wrong reasons..I would think that alone would be cause for action against him.

Agree about the ref. One of his foremost responsibilities is to protect players on the field from dangerous play. He failed.

I recently explained to the organizer of my pub league that my complaining about the refs not giving penalties isn't just whining because it's going to lead to an injury. It's unreal in this league. Keepers just come out at your feet, flailing-because they know the ref will not give a penalty.

This is good news. Even if he was fit to play by the start of March, thats a good few games for him to help us with. It could be a great push for the final quarter of the season.

I wonder if the quicker return has something to do with the bone not breaking the skin. Either way its very welcome and Gosling also.

That would be great news if he could return as early as January. We do have to make sure he is ready though and not rush him back so let's see how things go.

Great news if we can get the lad back early, won't be a quick return and can see it being late Feb or early March but enough games to make a difference in the run in. Having Gosling back will make a big difference as we will have more depth and be good to see what the lad can do

Agree with everyone here. This is great news, but he'll definitely help more if he's truly 100% when he returns. Would rather get him full-strength in February or March than a diminished version in January. We really could use him and Gosling, though-the article's right about that. Barton's suspension threw our midfield into disarray.
