Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Wigan Athletic

October 15 2010

Newcastle United host Wigan Athletic at St James’ Park tomorrow afternoon, their first game back after the International break. Wigan travel on the back of three wins, two draws and one defeat in their last six games, whilst Newcastle have lost three, drawn one and won two in their last six games.

Chris Hughton will be looking to restore his sides success on home turf after two consecutive defeats at St James’.

Andy Carroll will be pushing for a starting place after being dropped in favour of Shola Ameobi in their last league game, whilst Fabricio Coloccini has recovered from a groin problem which saw him substituted against Manchester City.

Steven Taylor (shoulder), Hatem Ben Arfa (broken leg), Steve Harper (collarbone), Dan Gosling (knee), and Leon Best (ankle) are all sidelined, whilst Danny Simpson (ankle) and Danny Guthrie (knee) could feature after recovering from their respective injuries and playing for the reserves.

Roberto Martinez is likely to rest Gary Caldwell who has a hip injury and Antolin Alcaraz (ankle) is a doubt for the game. Goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi is fit after recovering from a virus.

I agree entirely Andrew, any score as long as we win.

A game at St James's would have once given even the likes of Chelsea and Man U. pause for thought.

We need to return to the old days of 'Fortress Newcastle'

.

26. Krul
14. Perch 2. Coloccini 6. Williamson 3. Jose Enrique
8. Guthrie 7. Barton 24. Tiote 18. Jonas
9. Carroll 11. Lovenkrands

Bench:
33. Soderberg
16. Taylor
28. Kadar
10. Routledge
17. Smith
23. Ameobi
30. Ranger

Shook it up a bit, we can also switch to 4-5-1 easy enough, but I think this is how we're starting.

He could score two more in the second half and still be overrated.

At least if he gets interviewed at the end of the match he can let everyone know that Wigan is a stepping stone club for him, because he's never told anyone that before. Well at least not this far out from a transfer window.

In all seriousness though. He shouldn't have won the header for the first goal. Terrible defense by Williamson. He stumbled right before he should have leaped for the header. And the second goal Krul got beaten at his near post from a tight angle. Which should never happen.

Come on lads. We are due a come back. God knows its been awhile.

Lets go.

Football First - speaking positively of Newcastle's current play. Hopefully we can pull one more back and get a draw.

bloody hell, well a point is better than none but still we have lots of work to do. We cannot rely on last minute goals and draws at home all season. IMO there are a few players who looked poor today. Again perch, williamson didnt look that good at times and looks prone to the odd mistake also routledge when he came on got 100% pass completion ... to the opposition.

We need to buck our ideas up and fast at least coming back from 2 - 0 down will give a little confidence boost. What is so wrong with Raylor ? He has to be giving a chance ahead of perch.

We got lucky today lads.
Our passing was absolutely appalling to say the least.
that is the worst passing I have ever seen in a premiership game. Barton just kept on giving the ball away and when Wigan missed a chance we were giving them the ball back! Why?
Thank god we got a draw because I am thinking of suing Newcastle United for hair loss. I aged 20 years watching that game and I was nearly ripping my hair out.

I don't remember being this happy to draw a game.

At least we've stopped the losing streak at home stretching to 3.

Gotta be happy with a point after being down 2-0.

Hopefully we can string some results together at some point. We are clearly better than half the teams in this league.

Things just have to start going our way. Our players are definitely good enough when they play well.

I really think we have shown we have the squad to stay up for me now this is CH's real test to get the best out of what we got more often than we have seen so far we are too up and down.

Also i think the squad should now be over were back in the prem syndrome and maybe we will see some better runs of results even just a couple on the bounce would see a big diff in league position early season as it still is and give us that little lift of confidence that is so vital in the top flight

Still wonder if we have the goals and our persistent frailty on set pieces and long balls into the box is worrying.

too many of the sides we will face this season play the percentage game, focussing on the passages of play tunyc has pointed out. if we dont get used to this quickly, we'll not get the run of results senyab talks about all season. every other coach in the league will have noticed our weaknessess, now our coaches have to step up and put it right. maybe then we can at least hope to force OUR game onto the opposition, something we dont look like doing at the minute

Exactly. When it comes to games against other teams worrying about relegation, they're going to throw football out the window and try to beat us the easy way with set pieces and long balls. We have to find ways to defend those, simple as.
