Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Sunderland

Newcastle United host this weekend's Tyne-Wear derby as the chaos kicks off at St James' Park tomorrow lunchtime. Newcastle play on the back of a Carling Cup defeat against Arsenal and have lost three of their last six games, winning two and drawing one, whilst Sunderland have drawn four of their last six, won one and lost one.
Sunderland might have conceded fewer goals than any other team but Chelsea; but, their record for hitting the back of the net also remains low.
Newcastle manager Chris Hughton will not be giving Steven Taylor his comeback game after he failed to be fit in time, whilst Sol Campbell (thigh) is also 50/50 for pitch time.
Hatem Ben Arfa (broken leg), Steve Harper (collarbone) and Dan Gosling (knee) all remain sidelined. Hughton may give Shola Ameobi, who was not even on the bench in midweek an opportunity as the striker has shown his potential against Sunderland in the past by scoring 4 goals in their last three clashes.
Sunderland manager Steve Bruce also have several injuries to contend with, Fraizer Campbell (knee), David Meyler (knee) and Andy Reid (hamstring) are all absent, whilst Kieron Richardson is hoping to make an appearance having recovered from a hamstring problem.
Ahmed Elmohamady also returns to action after recovering from a foot injury. Sunderland fans will hope their luck is in, as they cheer their side to what they hope will be the clubs 10th Premier League Sunday win (of 56 games played).
Fact: Sunderland have won just 3 of their last 16 games against Newcastle in the Premier League.
Fact: Newcastle have only lost 6 of 42 North East derbies (this figure includes games played against Middlesbrough as well as Sunderland).

Here i as stat for ya from footy focus yesterday newcastle have had 24 shots against us on target in all prem games this season that is the least amount in the whole league

Ameobi may very well be the best penalty taker NUFC has ever had. I'm pretty sure he never misses and he tucks it in the bottom corner every time.

haha, sure i said bent gets plenty consolation goals in the bent vs carroll thread! not much consolation today i bet!
one point on tiote - he didnt start for 15 mins and i was worried. brilliant once he got going but malbranque and cattermole threatened to destroy him early on.
what a pen, by the way! whole team did well though, once we went ahead the whole bloody team forced the issue right through to half time, and game over

Ameobi was awesome today! he is a good player who always gets stick but scores often if he's given a run & not 10-20 mins a game! nolan, caroll, barton, williamson, simpson were all immense!!

this is why you should keep some of those 8's and 9's back, so you can throw em around after a match like that and they mean that little bit more!
personally, i thought every one of them did significantly better than last weekend. hard to pick a motm, but with barton playing like the guy i have denied he ever was all these years (yes, thats an apology, or as close as i'll be getting to one, get over it, you-know-who-you-are!) i'll go form him by a small margin
they all played a part though
this is why you should keep some of those 8's and 9's back, so you can throw em around after a match like that and they mean that little bit more!

Yeah lmk, I think 8's and 9's are going to be very hard to get after the standards that were set today for the remainder of the season.
Barton was outstanding and he really has impressed me this season. His balls into the box were excellent and he is now getting back to the form that won him an England cap. He may be getting another one soon if he keeps this up.

It's Ameobi for me. He showed me that he can do more than just score a goal out of nowhere. He put himself around the pitch well, showed good touch and vision in the final third, and took his free-play goal with authority and skill. 2 goals and an assist for the lad.
Next challenge for the lads, show some consistency. I don't expect three points at Emirates, but a good strong effort will do just nicely.

i dont think anyone really expected the shola/carroll combo to work much at all, nevermind as well as it has so far.
on reflection, i think today sunderland got the tactics absolutely spot on - for about 15 minutes at the start of the match. they sat in and waited, then broke well. the tackling was suberb, clean and effective, and with tiote being hurried into mistakes, i was fearing the worst. then they did the daftest thing they could have done - they got ambitious, thought they had drawn our sting, and came out to play. cue a prolonged period of newcastle pressure, and a couple of corners/free kicks, and a scrappy goal puts us ahead. frankly, sunderland went down like a house of cards after that, but this was because we raised our game and kept the pressure up for the rest of the half. the two strikers were important to this, chasing the away defence down, denying space and forcing long balls from a team playing a five man midfield. this gave a platform for the victory, and the way tiote screened and tackled, alongside lungbusting efforts from jonas and barton, allowed nolan the license to chase behind the strikers, to great effect. his ability to do this without the risk it brough when smith was in the side, won the game.
from a dodgy start, hughton won the tactical battle with this formation. it has to be the way forward for the foreseeable, surely. i do still wonder how we'd cope at 0 1 in a home match against a defensive set up, but get ahead and we'd make life very difficult for better sides than sunderland, who had conceded less than a goal a game so far this season, despite playing some of the best sides already. bring on arsenal, no way that lot will sit back!

I am actually home and phoned up and got tickets, bloody great game and great performance. The atmosphere was one the best it has been and on that form Sunderland didn't stand a chance. Great to hear the gaffers name being sang out.
Big performances and even though Carroll didn't score I thought he played a blinder, Strolla goals were well taken, and what a performance by Nolan, getting his goal. Barton played fantastic. Really impressed with Colo, and he looked strong
