Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Arsenal v Newcastle Utd

By Tyne-Talk
November 7 2010

Newcastle United travel to The Emirates tomorrow lunchtime for a 1.30pm kick off, on the back of a 5-1 win against Sunderland. Arsenal host on the back of a 2-1 Champions League defeat in midweek to Shakhter Donetsk. Newcastle have won two, lost three and drawn one of their last six games, whilst Arsenal have won five and lost just one of their last six in all competitions.

Whilst Arsene Wenger will be hoping a win will divert the Monday tabloids attention away from his personal affairs, Hughton will be looking for a far better result compared to the 4-0 Carling Cup defeat dished out by Arsenal just last week. With just six places and six points between the two sides there is all to play for. As things stand a win for Newcastle could put them in 4th place.

Wenger is expected to recall Cesc Fabregas (rested) and Andrey Arshavin (virus) after they both missed out in midweek and Jack Wilshere returns from suspension.

Arsenal are without Thomas Vermaelen (Achilles), Abou Diaby (ankle), Van Persie (ankle) and Kieran Gibbs (knee), whilst Alex Song (calf) and Denilson (groin) are both being assessed ahead of the match.

Newcastle have no new injury concerns but continue to be without Steven Taylor (dislocated shoulder) who is back in training, Steve Harper (collarbone), Leon Best (ankle), Hatem Ben Arfa (broken leg), Dan Gosling (knee) and Sol Campbell (thigh strain).

Hughton is likely to continue with the Andy Carroll and Shola Ameobi partnership with Gutierrez and Kevin Nolan in support. Danny Simpson is expected to start after a solid performance against Sunderland, whilst James Perch is likely to be on the bench alongside Ryan Taylor and Peter Lovenkrands.

Fact: Kevin Nolan is currently the (joint) top scorer in the Premier League this season with 7 goals.

Fact: Newcastle United have won just one of their last 15 games against Arsenal in the League.

commited to the cause grinning smiley

I dont know what to predict here for the first time in a long while i feel we have a strong system that works but i feel we could cave under the pressure of playing a top 4 side.

My head says 4-0 arsenal
My heart says 2-1 nolan carroll walccott

We should have 2 or 3 players back today.
And we need a good performance after our poor midweek display.
One bit of hope for you is that teams seem to suffer a bit who have played in the C/League midweek.
(Like our friends the Spuds. LOL (Sm22) )

But as you like to play football and there should be a good atmosphere with your travelling lot we should be up for it.
So I'm going for a 3 -1 win for us.

Fabregas and Nasri are causing major problems. Tiote needs to pick one and man mark him from here on.

Very good first half performance. We all knew it wasnt going to be like the mackem game and we would have to take the chances when they came. We have took one of them so lets keep up the same.

Hope Jonas can keep a bit more possession than he has but easier said than done.

Red card(Sm20) for Arsenal.

To be honest, Ranger would probably have fallen over anyway.(Sm100).

Unfortunately, we'll be in 5th regardless of what happens with the Brom/City game. A win for City puts them on 20 points, a win for Brom puts them on 18. A draw puts us 1 point behind City.

Either way, 17 points from 11 games is a fantastic start to the season. By the way, 4-3 at Stamford Bridge, 2-1 at Upton, 1-0 at Emirates. I love London.

Or is that what managing NUFC does to you-turns you grey?

Either way, this is a f00king unbelievable result. I'm starting to look forward to meeting LFC and breaking that hoodoo.

Again, those who claimed CH was on the way out look like real jerks now, don't they? At this point, we need 23 points from 27 games to hit 40. I like those odds!

Recorded the game. Couldn't be asked to get up at 6 a.m. for this expected shellacking. Just finished watching. Almost peeked at this post when we went up, but held off. Glad I did. Boy did we handle the pressure well. Nice dfending. (Yes, I wrote "nice defending" regarding NUFC.)

Our possession made Arsenal players a bit chippy--don't think they were used to other teams having that much against them, and they didn't like it.

Tiote brilliant again. (He turns out to get out of trouble so well.) Enrique solid all game. Hope Fabergas wanted Enrique's shirt as much as vise versa!

Barton's fade wins worst haircut. Bring back the 'stache.

Anyhow, I'll stop now. So damned happy. Enjoy the week!

(and players...enjoy tonight (except Carroll), and then forget it and get ready for next week)
