Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Chelsea

By Tyne-Talk
November 27 2010

Newcastle United hope to host Chelsea tomorrow lunchtime at a snowy St James’ Park as the first signs of winter creep over the North East. Newcastle have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games in all competitions, whilst Chelsea have won and lost three of their last six.

United manager Chris Hughton has had to respond to critics this week who have labelled his team “dirty” after having four players suspended in the last two weeks, and will be without Joey Barton, Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson as they all serve bans.

Cheik Tiote will return from his one match ban and is likely to slot straight back into the starting eleven, whilst Steven Taylor looks set to start in his team-mates absence as could Sol Campbell, who made his first official start for Newcastle in their 4-3 win against Chelsea in the Carling Cup earlier this season.

Hughton is also without Steve Harper (shoulder), Ryan Taylor (ankle), Leon Best (ankle), Dan Gosling (knee) and Hatem Ben Arfa (broken leg).

Carlo Ancelotti is without John Terry (back), Frank Lampard (groin), Zhirkov (calf) and Benayoun (Achilles) who are all injured, whilst Michael Essien is absent through a one match ban. Alex and Bosingwa however, both return from injury.

Chelsea will be looking to regain the top spot and their goal difference after both Manchester United and Arsenal secured three points earlier today knocking them down to third in the league; whilst Newcastle will be hoping to move back up the table having been pushed out of the top ten and just four points away from the bottom three.

Fact: Chelsea have not lost in three successive league games since October 1999.

Fact: These two sides have met 130 times in the league. Newcastle have won 44 and Chelsea have won 52, however Newcastle have not scored in their last 3 league matches against Chelsea.

Referee: Andre Marriner

Assistant referees: Jake Collin & Scott Ledger Fourth official: Chris Foy

Its on mate. Just been on SSN. They spent all morning clearing it.

Heading off myself for it soon.

Tiote back will be massive for us. With their defence a little rocky but having a packed midfield I would like to see Tiote and Guthrie in the middle with Rout out wide. Nolan off Carroll.

Lets get amongst them.

Nolan's taking a day off to nurse an ankle and Ameobi has the armband.

Gave up a goal at the stroke of half-time, which is never good, but held on well. Can't complain too much about a point against the defending champs. Though, I don't like helping Fergie out.

It's a point I'll definitely take. Well done lads, a point against the champions is never easy.

It's especially nice to see how much depth we have in the Central Defense. Taylor and Campbell were superb in controlling Drogba and clearing the lines. Interested in seeing your ratings. We barely saw the ball in the first half (I think Guardian's chalkboards logged only 8 passes, most by our defenders). Second half though, Tiote and Guthrie combined for 53/60 passing on non-set pieces after neither touched it for the first 45 minutes.

Good point about the depth, waffles. Can hardly remember when we had four top-class CBs like we do now, and Kadar is maturing nicely as well.
