Hughton Sacked - Ashley A Disgrace To The English Game
By Tyne-Talk
December 6 2010
Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has sacked manager Chris Hughton for what would appear to be no good reason whatsoever. Hughton who took the manager’s position in October 2009 had successfully guided to the team to promotion from the Championship as Champions last season when the critics had him penned to take the club further into misery by failing to even keep them in the Championship.
He has gone on to secure points against Arsenal and Chelsea and celebrated as his side dished out a 5-1 thrashing to rivals Sunderland just a few weeks ago. Hughton must be wondering where he went wrong in gaining promotion and seeing his team (because that is what he has formed) mid table, ahead of Liverpool and just a win away from 8th place.
The club released a statement which read;
“The board would like to place on record their thanks to Chris for his considerable efforts during the clubs transition from Championship to Premier League football. Chris has shown exceptional character and commitment since being appointed manager in October 2009.
The club wishes him well for the future. Regrettably the board now feels that an individual with more managerial experience is needed to take the club forward.
The task of appointing a new manager now begins. An announcement will be made shortly regarding transitional arrangements pending the appointment of a successor.”
Since that statement Peter Beardsley has been announced as caretaker manager with the support of Steve Stone.
However, the above gives absolutely no substance to the shock sacking, which is not supported by Hughton’s fellow football professionals, the players who have repeatedly backed their manager or the fans who cannot fathom Mike Ashley’s logic.
Hughton joins Sam Allardyce, May 2007 – January 2008, Kevin Keegan, January 2008 – September 2008, Joe Kinnear, September 2008 – February 2009 and Alan Shearer, April 2009 – May 2009 as the 5th manager to be discarded by Mike Ashley since his arrival at the club in 2007, during this time Nigel Pearson also took charge of the team on a temporary basis. Prior to this Glenn Roeder (2006 - 2007), Graeme Souness (2004 - 2006) and Sir Bobby Robson (1999 – 2004) were all in charge. A host of managers does not bring stability, nor does sacking a manager who has done no worse than over half the other managers in the Premier League since the season started.
No person can walk into the job of Newcastle United manager without failing to feel they will be sacked within months. With no clear goals, Mike Ashley is continuing to push away the fans and baffle the profession with his decisions.
What manager will come to a club who has no realistic targets, a track record like Mike Ashley’s and expectations which would precede even the top Premier League clubs with the lack of money available and inability to attract “star” players?
Whats next Mike? Offload Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan in the January sales? Nothing would suprise!

Really at least state what you think is wrong and then we can debat.
we dont know what ashleys reasons are, yet he is a disgrace?
do you, carys, think hughtons results have led to his sacking?
i seem to be rubbing people up the wrong way here today. but i expect the kind of digs we are aiming at our own club from those on the outside, so when it comes from our own side it isnt easy to take. it would be much easier if there was some balance, and we avoided hyperbole and insults. this is to me another PR disaster, but beyond that none of us know what has happened, what each side asked for, or how the discussion went. i think its clear that recent results have had no bearing on this though.
it'll settle, and so will we all.

Based on previous sackings - it wouldn't suprise me if Mike Ashley did use results as a reason. Article does refer to the lack of substance in the press release does it not?
I sadly put a lot of time into this site which could be better placed elsewhere, for very little credit if any. You want people's opinions? Then start contributing or encourage others to.
Because like I said this site is lucky to still be online.
Who are we going to get thats better?
Unless Mart leaves holland.
Carys-thank you for all your hard work for this site. Obviously, I enjoy coming here and having banter with y'all a lot. I'd like to contribute and I've tried to work up items in the past, but I always ended up feeling frustratingly behind the European soccer world's news cycle.
Not sure on how to punctiate photo, (not actually english)
carys, what did you mean by ashleys track record? are there any specific decisions which you disagreed with before today, and are any of them, with the benefit of hindsight easier to understand now? i stand by my earlier comment, i dislike the opening post for reasons already stated. what do i know, though?
I mean don't pick me up wrong I am not CHRIS'S biggest fan, but I ask again who can we get that is better?
I have just re'read this and frankly I need to stop repeating myself
was hughton offered a deal he refused to sign? was the appointment of his choice of assistant a deal-breaker? or was hughton not wanted at all? that seems the least likely, given his record at the club.
that is my one and only point. we have done @#$%& since Robson and last time I was on this site hoping for a manager we enee=ded off with the scotish cnt,
Ashley didnt mind us thumping Villa 6-0 or whopping the Mackems 5-1 or dumping Chelski out of the carling cup!
Why does he think Beardsley will do any better in the interim?
What sane half decent manager will want to Toon job anyway?

long contract, high wages, expensive assistant (which woul drequire a climbdown as the club stated they would appoint from within in future, months ago) and final say on transfers. hughton digs in, tells ashley he has the goodwill of tyneside with him, and to meet his demands.
whether we agree or not, we all know what the owner would do if my scenario was even close to being correct. he'd look fo r a replacement while the offer was on the table. its a business.
i happen to agree with the stance mike ashley has taken (apparently) over steven taylor. new contract on his terms, or transfer listed. this isnt because ashley wants to lose taylor, its because he only wants him on the right terms.
please, anyone who sees this as heresy, i'm only here to talk to the grown ups, and i've only posted a 'what if' for the purpose of discussion. (i may need this last statement as a sig before long if the next few months are as turbulent as we all fear)

It has quite a foreign following, not many UK members here!
If you require it to be over-run with bell-ends just pray the new managers first signing in January is to re sign Nacho Gonzalez,
then this place will be rocking again with Nico & his numbskull mates

How ironic would this theory be!
We never replaced our assistant manager! Jol was Leaving Ajax, Hughton was asked to step down & become assistant again and work under Martin Jol,
just being ridiculous, but nothing suprises me with the clowns running the Toon

I think you do a great job, and I don't think people are having a dig, but trying to discuss and have maybe came across in the wrong light. I think it would be good for people to help out and I would love to, but as you maybe have noticed in the last few weeks, I haven't been on the forum much, with being so busy.
Don't get down and if things get really bad I will try and chip in with the odd story, but maybe a load of gash or plenty of swear words with how I feel at the moment

Well Mighty I havnt commented on the whole incident yet but that is exactly what I thought when I heard about Jol leaving. I believe that CH was either his number two or a coach for Jol when at spurs, so it wouldnt be out of the question for Ashley to suggest to CH to work under him again. This could make CH walk out or at least to put his foot down which in turn could force Ashley's hand.
I am planning on being back in Newcastle for christmas (but unless santa has been really kind I am not buying Newcastle).
I have had a few hours now to be annoyed, and now its time to move on. Chris should not of been sacked but now its happened we need to move on.
I really hope the Martin Jol rumour has truth (what I don't want is anoother keagan soap opera, which is what O'Neil will give us).
I will say again although its not going to happen but Oscar Hitzfeld is still available.
I'd be useless at writing an article but try to support by turning up.
I had no problem with the article, Chris Hughton has been treated shamefully in my opinion. I don't care if the 'Special One' replaces him. He should not have been sacked.

The Eastenders of football.. Newcastle!
And when I am next back in toon I will happily buy you a pint.
But I have to labour this point who can we get that is better?
Firstly, Martin Jol. I think he did a good job at Spurs as well as Hamburg, even though he was only there for a year. He also led Ajax back to the champions league after a few years absence so I think he could well be somebody better than Chris Hughton (although as I've stated before I was gutted to see him go) for Jol does have more experience than Hughton.
Secondly, Alan Curbishley. I thought he did a remarkable job at Charlton under a small budget, which is something he could face at Newcastle so there again is somebody with more experience and potentially better than Hughton.
The third name I thought of was Martin O'Neill although he left Aston Villa for something similar to what we facing so although he may be better, he may not be a realistic option.
The papers seem to think that Alan Pardew had a discussion about taking over, some ten days ago, so he may be the manager we looking at but I do feel he may not be better than Hughton even though he has more experience.
At the end of the day, I'm sure the club has a plan and I'm eagerly waiting to see who they appoint, for I don't think they would have sacked Hughton if they did not. Yes Ashley made mistakes before, but over the last year or so, the club has been very well run, so as much as I was sad to see Chris go, we need to move on and see who the new manager is, before saying Ashley is a disgrace. I do feel he should not have sacked Chris, but then again we don't know what goes on at the club so let's see what happens.

Something was sorted as they are talking about appointing somebody come the weekend, which means that maybe Jol is the bag. Out the managers who have been thrown around he may be the best one. Curbs and Pardew are not for me even though I think they did ok jobs, O'Niell I quite like but with the way the club is ran he won't last long and would be a bad move.
I am still struggling to get to terms with what happened, and what direction the club wants to take, as I can't see us having loads to spend so we are never going to get a top manager, and anybody coming in are going to want to spend cash to bring in their players.
Just another of my crazy theories
