Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Tottenham v Newcastle Utd

Newcastle United travel to White Hart Lane for today’s match against Tottenham Hotspur, on the back of one win, two draws and three defeats from their last six games. Spurs host on the back of 3 wins and 3 draws from their last six games in all competitions. Both sides come into the game after playing Boxing Day fixtures and wins for both teams are vital during this heavily congested period of the season.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has no fresh injury concerns but continues to be without Shola Ameobi (hamstring), Hatem Ben Arfa (broken leg), Dan Gosling (knee) and Ryan Taylor (ankle). Tim Krul will maintain his place in goal ahead of Steve Harper, whilst Skipper Kevin Nolan is absent through suspension after collecting his 5th yellow card of the season against Manchester City on Sunday.
Andy Carroll should also feature, despite landing awkwardly on his ankle at the weekend.
Spurs manager Harry Redknapp is unlikely to have William Gallas (hamstring) available, but could see the return of Luka Modric (cramp), whilst Jermaine Defoe begins a 3 match suspension and is unavailable.
Newcastle will be chasing their 3rd win in London of the season and have a good goal scoring record against Spurs. Prior to Spurs 1-0 at White Hart Lane in April 2009, Newcastle had won the previous 6 fixtures and scored 18 goals. However, Spurs go into this game unbeaten in 9 league and cup home games.
Fact: Newcastle are unbeaten in 4 League games in London this season, picking up wins against West Ham and Arsenal and drawing with Chelsea and Fulham.
Fact: 5 of Andy Carroll’s 11 League goals this season have been headers – all assisted by Joey Barton.

Im afraid I cannot agree with your optimism above. I think we've got little to no chance of getting something out of today's game. I'd like to be proven wrong but with Perch and Smith starting, and Enrique not playing today, I just can't see it.

nolan is suspended and enrique I'm not 100% about they mentioned it on real radio's build up to the match but i only caught the back end of the conversation tbh. personally I would of played 442
with krul, simpson, colo, williamson, s taylor
routledge, barton, tiote, jonas
carroll and ranger.
but I really cant seee us getting anything today, with a poor looking team imo. Hopefully some long balls into the box from our packed midfield might throw in a suprise result but its a lot to ask of carroll.

I hate not being able to watch them every week here in the UK even though I have the top Sky package out ~
Its annoying sky have just brought out red zone for the NFL so you never miss a touchdown as it happens and yet they never think of doing it for our own beloved EPL. Give me NUFC Vs Anyone very week rather than Arsenal V Chelsea from last night, we should have the red button choice that you get when the champions league is on so you decide to watch which ever match you want.

watching a decent link of it now, and the ref is all for them that was never a freekick against smith. I have muted the commentators also as there biased towards tottenham I hate it when commentators are like that.

Well, I'm not seeing any of this though I could have predicted it would go this way by the lineup. The squad still lacks depth-one defender out and Perch right back in the starting XI. Also: Smith. Maybe AP needs to learn a lesson, but then again I heard claims that he's watched all our games from this season on DVD so I'm not sure what more he needs to see.

We've just not looked good enough on attack today. Playing at least a quarter of the game against ten men and we still looked so poor. It's very very frustrating.

That was the case on Sunday as well, when City ceded possession of the ball time and again but we couldn't do anything in the final third. Somebody other than Carroll and Nolan needs to score occasionally.

Pretty safe to say this is our worst performance for the year in attack.
The first goal was completely Perch's fault. He gave Lennon way too much space. Apart from that we defended ok for the first 55 minutes.
The attack has been completely useless. Only Barton and Carroll look like making anything happen in open play and they only have each other to pass to. You can't beat a team when you attack with two players.
Why didn't Guthrie start in place of Smith? Smith has defended reasonably but he offers nothing in attack. Never has and never will.
And don't get me started on the free kicks. I would have said Barton had played well today if he hadn't wasted half a dozen free kick opportunities.
Pitiful performance at a very important time of year. Not what I expected today after the performance two days ago. I can safely say I have never seen the side play well with Smith in the side.
I would actually be interested to know the last time we won a PL game with Smith playing. He hasn't scored in the PL for 5 years and probably hasn't won in it for 4.

We could have easily equalised after going down 2-0. And we looked a constant threat from set pieces.
Today was the complete opposite.
There was no movement off the ball and we looked utterly terrible. That was definitely not the case against City.

I did watch the game Sunday.
I think back to the WC. After Germany lost to Spain everyone pointed to Spain's 60+% possession as the reason why. But Germany gave up that much possession to Argentina and England as well. It's how they play-they don't place high importance on keeping the ball for most of the game, rather they try to make all possession count by breaking quickly and creating scoring chances off of those breaks. City, a team that starts 3 holding mids (Germany only use 2) play the same way.
Other than lots of possession in midfield-we did hold the ball well, moved off the ball, found open teammates and passed well-what about that performance impressed you? Remember: our one goal came off a set piece. Other than Ranger's knockdown that Nolan missed, I don't really recall our ever threatening City's goal. They didn't have us under siege, but that's always how Mancini's City is going to approach a game in which they're up 2-0 in the first five minutes.

Nolan, Enrique, Williamson all not featuring was a huge loss, I think the manager will think he owes Taylor some games due to him signing a new deal, but Williamson & Colo was a better partnership imo, & with the injuries & suspensions, means we had nothing to compete with, Nolan would have pushed up with Carroll, Enrique would have supported Gutierrez, And give Lennon a harder time,
But the lads that fill in cant cope at this level,
heard someone say Routledge had his 98th PL start and has never scored a goal, (or delivered a decent cross)

If there was one lesson from today's game it should be to get Ben Arfa signed on a permanent deal for we need his creativity and goals as well as getting another attacker on loan I feel. Anyone know how far off Gosling is from getting to match fitness? Would be interested to see what he'll bring to the team too.

A winger who can score is what this squad needs, assuming we want to keep Nolan in the squad. Maybe there's something to the SWP talk. For all the protests that he's too similar to Routledge, he does have 35 PL goals to his name. While he has declined, he had nine in his last 56 appearances (many as a sub) before this season.
Wayne Routledge has indeed never scored a PL goal in 98 appearances. He did provide 10 assists in 2004-05 with Palace. I'd be happy to get that, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I like the sound of SWP if true, but West Ham rumoured to be looking to him also!
Would be nice if we renewed the intrest shown in Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who has weighed in with 11 for Utrecht this season, we were rumoured to be close at the end of last window!
we do need some PL standard players just to stay in this division, Cos also we have been lucky this time not to have too many injuries compared to other seasons!

No way we're getting RVW-he's been linked to some of the biggest clubs in Europe. He'll cost waaaaaaaaaaay more than we'll be willing to spend. SWP and Keane are the realistic options.

you say big clubs in Europe, But look at what happened to Huntelaar, RVW would just be a bench warmer for a top club,
I think the asking price would be 7million or there abouts, but I dont think wages would be an issue, he cant be earning much in Holland?
Its always a gamble for big clubs when signing from Eredivise, cos you dont know how they will turn out, Kezman Babels, Huntelaar's,
Guess it would be down to him, should he want to play more football, and not hinder what future he has sitting on Inter or Liverpool's bench

I don't disagree that he's not a nailed-on worldbeater on whom Manchester United will spend 15M and stick him right in the starting XI. But if the asking price is 7M for example, I repeat: we're not going to spend that on anyone in January and probably not over the summer either.
As for Huntelaar-I'm confused about people's take on him. Since he left Ajax he's scored 22 in 58 appearances in the Serie A and Bundesliga. One could certainly do worse. Real overpaid for him but that can't surprise anyone. Their answer to any problem is always to throw money at it.
