Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Tottenham
By Tyne-Talk January 21 2011
Newcastle United host Spurs tomorrow afternoon, with both teams going into the game on the back of draws. Newcastle have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games, whilst Tottenham have won four, drawn one and lost one of their last six games in all competitions. A win tomorrow for Newcastle could see them in 7th place by the end of the night, whilst a win for Spurs will see them go 4th.
Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has several injuries to contend with, including Andy Carroll (thigh), Alan Smith (ankle), Steven Taylor (hamstring), Sol Campbell (leg), Hatem Ben Arfa (broken leg), Ryan Taylor (ankle) and Dan Gosling who despite returning from injury last week is sidelined once more after the knee joint swelled up.
Cheik Tiote serves the 2nd game of a three match ban and Kevin Nolan is fighting off a throat infection but should start, whilst Wayne Routledge is on his way to Queens Park Rangers.
Once again Leon Best will start alongside Shola Ameobi.
Harry Redknapp also has several injured players with Jamie O’Hara (back), Jonathan Woodgate (groin), Tom Huddlestone (ankle), Ledley King (groin) all unavailable, whilst Jermaine Defoe is hoping to start.
Steven Pienaar who has signed for Spurs from Everton is expected to make his debut from the bench, but Benoit Assou-Ekotto (knee) and Wilson Palacios (knee) are both doubts.
Fact: Spurs last won at St James’ Park in the League back in 2004, when Jamie Redknapp was in the team. Spurs have failed to pick up a single point at the ground in the League since.
Fact: If Kevin Nolan scores, it will be his 50th Premier League goal. It will also be his 11th this season, putting him on the same number of goals as striker Andy Carroll.
Mark Halsey referees.

tunyc And Nolan has an infection?! The bench is going to be very light today. Maybe I should alert AP to my availability...
I'm calling a 3-1 win, since I've seen three magpies in my time in Europe!
HOWAY THE LADS!
Well, then. I'll call 1,000 to 1 win as they are ubiquitous here in Colorado!
Oh, and I don't know why Pardew's given up on Best-Lovenkrands. I think they match up better than Best-Ameobi. Lover has more hussle and and is a better passer. Who cares how he practices, HE'S A GAMER!
dammit those wasted chances 2nd half came to haunt us, we really need to capitalise on these opportunities and not try and hold on for the lead it doesnt suit us and it rarely works.
Brilliant game, kept thinking Lennon was gonna score though, given the space to move the way he does, Shame he just did not tire like the rest of the spurs team,
Was not as bad as losing the way we did last week, and we now need only 10 points form 15 games, we can secure that now i reckon, so im happy
painful to think that enrique had so completely shut out lennon that he was forced to swap wings - then he ran through on the right and scored. blame enrique for being too good!
quite right about ranger, he should have pulled it back. shola was guilty too, when he took a crazy shot instead of playing loven in. unusually poor ball by barton in the attack before lennon scored, too. he was still very good today, but i think some of his passing was down on recent showings.
jonas, jose, colo and williamson - heck the whole back four really - did well along with barton, but we should have fallen over the line here even more than last week, in my opinion.
we went up to 7th with this point by the way, not all bad...
It was very disappointing to have drawn again today but I suppose if I was told we'd draw earlier in the week I'd have taken it so its not all doom and gloom, nor would it have been had we lost. There were some really good performances and we've got to build on that. We've now got time to look to add a player or two so let's hope we'll have a better bench to call upon in the next game.
Too bad about the goal. It kind of felt like it was coming after Lurch came on, but I can't figure why Simpson kept showing Lennon inside. He has no left foot, he didn't even try to cross/shoot with his left once.
A fair result-both teams had chances they should have taken.
VDV disgraced himself w/his diving and @#$%& at the ref and should have been booked in the first half. Hutton went down real easy a few times, too. Pienaar doesn't look like the same player from a couple seasons ago.
From what I've seen I wouldn't mind trying Carroll & Loven when the former is healthy. Shola won everything in the air but that's all he did. It was funny the way he acknowledged the crowd when he was subbed. Everyone on our side of the ground just wanted him off the pitch!
Finally, I hope Guthrie's not hurt bad. He was immense and we jusT don't have the numbers to lose him.
wasim4nufc Alan Pardew has confirmed that Guthrie suffered from cramp and that he was not taken off because of an injury. There's some good news.
ah, at least that is something. we have a ten day gap now too, to get people up and running
It seemed pretty obvious when they were tending to him. They stretched him out, he limped a couple steps then jogged nicely. The lad hasn't had 90 minutes consistently this season, so it's not surprising for him to cramp up at that stage of the game, especially with how fast it was moving at that point. His long balls to open the first half were impeccable, and he ran hard. Good to see him get the nod in the middle of the pitch rather than on the wing.
