Barton Unhappy With 2 Year Offer

Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton is said to be unhappy at being offered a two year extension to the current contract he signed back in 2007, rather than a new 5 year deal which would tie him to the club for the rest of his playing career.
The 28 year old has an excellent season so far back in the Premier League and was a key player in the side returning from the Championship. He has also repeatedly stated his commitment to the club.
He reiterated this in December when he was quoted saying;
“I have been on record as saying I want to stay here for the rest of my career. Nothing has happened and no one has told me otherwise, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s what’s going to happen.”
Barton has 16 months left on his current contract.

No doubt the club had plans to sign him up with a wage reduction but with the form he's in it's got to be hard to argue for that. Maybe they've now decided that the way forward is to keep the wages the same and reduce the years: an extension. I assume an extension would keep his wages the same.
