Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v West Brom

Newcastle United host West Bromwich Albion in tomorrow’s final game of the season, and what is probably the closest game of the year. Just 1 point separates the sides, whilst they have scored an equal number of goals. Newcastle take the pitch with the better goal difference, but it’s not just West Brom who will be hoping to secure a top ten finish. Just 3 points separates 8th from 13th and so it’s all to play for for Aston Villa, Newcastle, West Brom, Stoke City, Fulham and Bolton Wanderers with a financial incentive for a higher League place.
Newcastle go into the game on the back of an positive draw against Chelsea last weekend and have three draws, one win and two defeats from their last 6 games. West Brom travel to Tyneside on the back of three wins, one draw and two defeats from their last 6.
Alan Pardew has had a consistently high number of players out injured this season and the ends marks no difference as the club continue to have the highest number of injuries in the League. He will be without Kevin Nolan (ankle), Steve Harper (knee), Hatem Ben Arfa (leg), Dan Gosling (knee), Danny Guthrie (shin), Stephen Ireland (ankle), Tamas Kadar (hamstring), James Perch (knee), Haris Vuckic (knee), Mike Williamson (broken arm) and Jonas Gutierrez (minor knock).
Cheik Tiote will be sidelined so he doesn’t pick up another yellow card and with that a 3 match ban, whilst Sol Campbell may still be listed on the club website as a player until June, but has failed to be available for most of the season.
Shane Ferguson will start in place of Jonas Gutierrez after recovering from a minor ankle problem, whilst Leon Best may start on the bench after returning to training having also recovered from an ankle injury. Tim Krul will finish the season in goal, with Ole Soderberg on the bench, whilst Alan Smith (ankle) is also available.
West Brom manager Roy Hodgson could retain the side which beat Everton last weekend, which included Chris Brunt (previous hamstring problem) and Steven Reid (calf injury). His only injury concerns are for Graham Dorrans who is out with an ankle injury and Pablo Ibanez (hamstring).
Fact: A win for Newcastle tomorrow will have secured them 12 points from home games against sides from the Midlands this season.
Fact: Newcastle have won 6 of 18 home games this season (including Aston Villa, Wolves and Birmingham).
Fact: West Brom have won just one of their last 18 games against Newcastle United and haven’t won a league game at St James Park since 1977.
Fact: West Brom will finish in their highest Premier League position ever.

Really hoping for the 3 points today. would be a great way to end a good season. however, if you look at that team, especially the midfield and forwards - its essentially a carling cup squad.
Just goes to show, you can never have enough depth. Would like to see Smudge and Besty get on end the season on the pitch.
Still, I think the crowd will be worth at least one goal today, new strip and all that!

Newcastle have the lead through centre-back turned centre-forward Steven Taylor, who has now netted three goals in as many games. Ryan Taylor's inswinging corner isn't cleared by West Brom and Taylor, with his back to goal three yards out, turns the ball into the net. Not a classic but they all count. As they say.

Newcastle have a second - and it's almost a controversial one. Shola Ameobi beats Abdoulaye Meite in the air and the ball drops to Peter Lovenkrands, who volleys an effort towards goal. Scott Carson palms the ball into the air and scrambles back to stop it crossing the line but is unable to prevent the whole ball going over. The assistant ref immediately gave the goal - and TV replays appear to suggest that was the right call.
Very happy with the 2-0 half time scoreline. Would be awesome if there was more of the same in the second half.

It's not the biggest of games of the day - though a look at Roy Hodgson's face would tell you he disagrees with that - but it's comfort zone time for Newcastle, Jonas Olsson deflecting Enrique's low cross into his own net six yards out.

It's the game only the club's fans' care about... but Somen Tchoyi evades the Newcastle offside trap to slot the ball past Tim Krul. Neat finish but surely too little too late for the Baggies.

This match is determined to muscle in on the limelight isn't it? Somen Tchoyi has scored another and West Brom are back in this. Collecting the ball at the far post, Tchoyi sidesteps Fabricio Coloccini rather easily before firing into the roof of the net from close range. Game on.

Well that was typical wasn't it. 3-0 and cruising...and blow it. In the end lucky to get a point.
Defo leaves a sour taste and in all, it was a good season. We all knew that we would concede but the subs came too early for me. Should have waited for the 80 minute. Smith looked totally off, Best couldn't stay on his feet.
Shame, but now we have a busy summer to look forward to!

That bloody goal has cost NUFC about 2 million quid moving them from 9th to 12th. I actually think that is the most annoying thing.

The big concern is that we finished 3 points above Blackburn who went into survival sunday and could have went down, major investment is needed and we can't do what we have done this year by selling players and not bringing in faces.
Still pleased though, as a newly promoted team we stayed in the premiership, todays result was not the best

I'm trying not to get caught up in the result (and I wonder if we would have folded like a tent if Tiote were on the field).
For a promotion season, it's mission accomplished as we've survived with some comfort. But next season will be a real test without Carroll's goals. We ended up in amongst a bunch of clubs who will likely be next years relegation strugglers.

Yeah defo, this is one of the biggest summers we have had in years, bar the promotion season. Next year there will be a few teams fighting to stay up the 3 teams coming up will be there, with the likes of Wigan, Wolves and possibly Sunderland, Blackburn (depending on who the manager is) and maybe us depending on the players we bring in or go out

Really disappointed we lost the three goal lead today but typical toon. We were not out played by a long shot but in true fashion we thought we were cruising and then spunked it.
The subs were very poor as well. Why take off Ferguson who was really up for it. F00king Smith, he isnt and never will be a CM and Best was just as Baffling. Two lads who havnt played in months when we were fresh and up for it with the youngsters at Chelsea.
Apart from that its mission accomplished and we have stayed up. Never mind finishing above the Mackems, I read that if we won today then all the back room staff (not coaches) would have shared a big bonus. Which is a shame as that will be cleaners to cooks that are out of pocket due to the players just eaking out the season. Shame.

Actually I thought LuaLua looked really good, other than losing his footing a couple of times (as did Best, weird). But agree with Best and Smith, neither looked ready to play, especially Smith - useless.

Do you think Norwich can survive having gone from League 1 last season to Premier League next? Granted, Norwich scored tons of goals this season, but still.
As far as the play-off sides, Reading is not much changed from last season. Swansea still needs to learn how to score goals, and more than 1/3 of theirs this season were scored by Sinclair (on loan from Chelsea).
I see 2 of the 3 promoted sides going down next year. QPR will probably stay up, in part because they are likely will spend heavily this summer.

I wouldn't be surprised if Norwich aren't as dire as WHam. And the rumor is that Mittal wants to gain control of QPR and turn them into City mark II.

I don't think that the step up is as massive as it used to be, and reckon Norwich could stay up with the team bond, good tactics and some lucky signings, yeah they are one of the favourites to go down but you never know
I think QPR may go tight, as it is expected that they are going to go wild, but we will know if they stick with Warnick on the future of them, if he stays then they will be tight if he goes then they will blow money

I think the ease with which we stayed up with more or less the same squad as we had last season highlights the amount of utter shite there is in the division. We had a lot of Premier League players on the books I know, but with a very modest investment on a team that were relegated without a fight (less than £10m maybe even £5m? If I'm missing someone glaringly obvious I apologise) we were two points off a 9th placed finish, and most seasons would see you in Europe for finishing 7th.

The above estimates I think are quite generous, and seem to suggest we have invested only the money brought in by sales of players on relegation.
I think Wigan will struggle again next year, Norwich too (2 promotions on the bounce - Premier League is a LOT different to League 1 - I'd love them to stay up, but not at our expense
) but I reckon it will be tight at the bottom again.

Thing is: we only finished 7 points above the drop ourselves, we lost our top scorer and we also had the luck to get a player for 3.5M who would cost well upward of 10M now. We'll possibly lose two more starters. Staying in this league is still challenging. Just ask Alan Pardew.

All goes on the summer and who we bring in or more inportantly who we lose, if it is going the way that we expect then staying in the division is the priority and we shouldn't be talking about Europa Football.
Think Wigan will struggle as the are looking like they are going to lose 3 big players, but they are getting better under Martinez
The division is weaker and it is easier for teams to stay up, Norwich will struggle but I hope they stay up as long as we don't go down in their place.

Martinez has them fairly well drilled, but I don't think they can handle the losses of N'Zogbia (definitely gone), McCarthy (very likely gone) and Rodallega (no rumors yet, but give it time). Still, even if nobody leaves we still need a forward who can score. As long as that's taken care of we'll probably survive. But if we can actually improve the squad, a well-placed top half finish is not at all impossible.

Fully agree, we need a centre forward who can bang them in, I suppose it goes on what formation we play and who plays on the style of forward and if we need two, but I would like to see us getting two forwards anyway.
I would like us to and bring in somebody who is quick so we can start to counter attack teams and stretch the play. But if we play in a 4-5-1 I can see us going for a big player who can hold up and free up Nolan to get behind the defence.
I would flog Shola if the money was good, you never know somebody might pay some decent money for him. I would keep keep Loverkrands and Best as they are capable of getting goals and you would not get any money for them. Loan Ranger out for the season. So if this happens two forwards are needed
