Nolan Pulls Appeal & Wastes Court Time

Newcastle United skipper Kevin Nolan has been slammed by the courts after withdrawing an appeal against his conviction for speeding, which was set to be heard at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday. The 28 year old, who was caught doing 65mph in a 30mph zone in May of last year failed to attend the trial back in February as well as yesterday's appeal hearing.

The judge said of the situation;

"The abandonment of the appeal only came 24 hours before the hearing was due to start, by which time the court had already been booked.

This is a waste of court time and costs, so I see no reason why Mr Nolan should not pay further costs, knowing something about his financial circumstances.

I take the view that the full amount should be paid within 28 days, but I see no reason why this shouldn’t be paid sooner.”

Nolan was sentenced to a 60 day driving ban plus a £1000 fine, £2731 court costs and £15 surcharge back in February, an amount which remains outstanding. Yesterday's hearing saw the judge add on an additional £415 on top.

The appeal was withdrawn on the basis he had already served his ban.
