Newcastle United host Arsenal tomorrow evening in their first game of the 2011/12 Premier League season. Both sides have problems with players leaving the club and unrest within the team. Newcastle said goodbye to Kevin Nolan at the beginning of pre-season, whilst Jose Enrique is the latest to leave, and Joey Barton was transfer listed after comments he made about the Board. Arsenal are contending with a young team and key players such as Fabregas and Nasri both preparing to leave the club.
For Newcastle, pre-season gave no rest when it came to problems and Hatem Ben Arfa, Danny Guthrie, Steve Harper and Shane Ferguson all picked up pre-season injuries.
Guthrie, Harper and Ferguson are now all fit, as is Mike Williamson (broken arm). Only Hatem Ben Arfa (ankle) remains absent through injury.
Cheik Tiote returned to England earlier this week after resolving visa problems in Ghana and is expected to be thrown straight into action by manager Alan Pardew, whilst Joey Barton, is expected to be named in the starting eleven.
Arsene Wenger hasn’t named Cesc Fabregas or Samir Nasri in his squad, and Jack Wilshire (ankle) and Abou Diaby (ankle) are both out injured.
Theo Walcott and Thomas Vermaelen return to the fold but Robin van Persie (knee), Kieran Gibbs (thigh) will both undergo late fitness tests.
Fact: In this game last season Arsenal were 4-0 up by the 26th minute – Newcastle then scored 4 goals in the final 22 minutes to draw 4-4.
Fact: Newcastle’s top two goal-scorers last season have now both left the club.
Fact: Arsenal had the best away record in the Premier League throughout the 2010/11 season.

Defensively, I thought the first half was good. Colo, Simpson, and S. Taylor have done a good job in the box. Going forward, the ball is not getting to Tiote or Cabaye. Too much long ball.

Disappointing half-from both sides.
Let's see if AP gets the sub right. I think Obertan will help, but he should come on for Ameobi, not Barton. Shola and Ba are not really playing off each other but if we can get one more in midfield I think we'll see a lot more of the ball.
Colo has been solid. Tiote is still a beast and doesn't seem any the worse for time missed. Ba looks bright at times.
Shola is still lazy, despite his talent. Cabaye is off the pace but then Gervinho looks rusty at times too, which I'd expect. We need a left back desperately.

I think the stats look worse than the game did. Very few oportunities for goals during the whole game for both teams.

Wasn't contact on Tiote when he fell, so I think he cramped up, as it wasn't a sharp turn that would hurt a ligament. He didn't get to play against Leeds or Fiorintina so I'm sure the 90 minutes just took its toll.

The game should have finished 10 v. 9 and the officials will be the talking point. Obertan had a few nice touches, and showed some fantastic pace running down some balls. Fullbacks struggled, but every fullback does against Arsenal. The crosses were limited enough, and Van Persie never had any clean touches, so credit to Colo and Staylor is due. Ba, Ameobi, and Best all looked like the same player. Ameobi worked hard in the second half, but his first half was lacking. Ba showed nothing, and Best worked hard for his 15 minutes.
Happy to take a point off Arsenal, but would have liked more chances.

I watched Bolton v. QPR on Fox Soccer Plus instead of Fulham. QPR got hammered, and old boy Fitz Hall was abysmal.

Done what was needed when have we seen a newcastle close a top 4 side out like that...its not pretty but its neccesarry stoke and fulham have been consistently doing it versus the likes of arsenal I'm glad to see us doing whats needed.

You're right Andrew. According to Wikipedia, we played 29 players in the league last season, and 4 more in cup matches. Sunderland played 29 the entirety of the season, cups included.
We named 23 at the start of the season, but Xisco, Forster (never played), and Routledge all left at some point. Ireland and Kuqi were added to it in January. Carroll, Ferguson, Gosling, Sammy Ameobi, and Ranger weren't named since they were under 21.
A lot of other teams named less than 23 players as well. Arsenal only named 20, but with Ramsey, Gibbs, Walcott, and Wilshire and a ton of other young players they made up for it.
I believe we have 30 "First-Teamers" at the moment, but Alan Smith, Ole Soderberg, Abeid, Donaldson, Ranger and Perch are included in that. Tavernier also has a first team squad number, but he's on loan.

I don't think it is the squad size that worries me, but the quality in who you bring in, for instance Ferguson didn't start and R.Taylor got the nod, so that is something that needs to be looked at. Some players should get nowhere the team like Smudge and he shouldn't be included in the squad as I would rather play the kids than some of the rubbish we have as back up.
Really good point about the likes of Fulham shutting out the top teams and that is what we need to do, even at home try and get as many draws as possible and then you never know you maybe to nick all 3 points. With some of the players we have I think we have a plan A and plan B, which we never had last year, but saying that Barton needs to stay if he winds his neck in, as you can still see him committed to the cause. We have enough options to pick a different style in midfield now, with workers who will put it about and others who can offer that bit of pace

I think Ferguson is still hurt, which is why Ryan Taylor had to fill in. Other than his pace lacking against Gervinho's, he did fairly well defensively, and covered well inside. I wouldn't want him there every week, but he did well enough to earn his choice yesterday.
If Pieters comes in, that will at least give us a first choice Left Back and Ryan Taylor/Ferguson can serve as cover/substitutes. A 4th CB would be nice, but arguably a luxury, as Simpson can deputize if needed. The problem is still our lack of true "quality" up front with Best/Ba/Ameobi all essentially being the same player.

Maybe Kadar also might finally be pushed up a bit more and giving the odd chance here or there as a 4th choice CB. Look at how phil jones turned out at Blackburn last year.

Fully agree with you waffles about the front line, I think BA will come good, best is ok as maybe a 3rd or 4th choice forward in ideal world. Never been a fan of Shola. I would personally would rather see Best than Shola up front. Thats why we need another forward, I would like to see us go for a quick one, as they can offer us something different, as the other ones are quite similar. Not to sure if AP is thinking about playing Vuckic up front, and I would like to see what the lad can do
I did think R.Taylor did a good job against Arsenal, but everybody can have one good game, for me he is another one that isn't good enough. Given the choice off a fit Ferguson and Taylor then Ferguson gets the nod for me everytime

It is getting the balance right fo us, of having a bit expereince who are good enough but at the same time letting the kids develop like Sammi, Vuckic, Ranger and Ferguson. If they are not going to play and we know it then they need to be loaned out, some of them will like Ferguson and I can see Vuckic getting used. If it is true what AP says we will get a forward and a LB in. So if we go on the numbers that you say will get time on the pitch properly I would probably agree with it takes us to 22 players with a couple loaned out who can be recalled. With those numbers maybe a couple of experienced loaners would be good which free's up up getting some of the kids time on the pitch at a lower league to develop

I'd just like to see two viable, PL-standard players in each position. If some are young, that's fine.

we need a proper LB and a striker no doubt about it, on top of that i would of bought a player such as john o'shea who can cover every position across defence and also go into midfield if need be! Hughton thought he had signed this lpayer when he bought Perch but he just didn't step up to PL level.
