Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Blackburn Rovers

By Tyne-Talk
September 23 2011

Newcastle United host Blackburn Rovers tomorrow after as both teams play on the back of Carling Cup wins in midweek. Newcastle have won four and drawn two of their last six games in all competitions, whilst Blackburn have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.

Alan Pardew is expected to name Hatem Ben Arfa in his starting eleven at St James’ Park after he played 70minutes in midweek, but has stressed he will not rush the midfielder in his return.

Mehdi Abeid and Dan Gosling both returned from injury against Nottingham Forest, but are unlikely to start against Blackburn, whilst Shola Ameobi picked up a shoulder injury and is a doubt. Tim Krul will return in goal with Ryan and Steven Taylor re-joining Fabricio Colocinni at the back.

Long term absentees include Alan Smith (knee), Haris Vuckic (broken hand) and Mike Williamson (broken arm), whilst Davide Santon will miss out after having fluid drained from his knee, despite returning to training this week.

Blackburn manager Steve Kean will welcome Vince Grella (Achilles) back for his first League game after playing 90 minutes in midweek, but will be without Morten Gamst Pederson (hamstring), David Dunn (hamstring) and Ryan Nelson (knee).

Fact: Newcastle United have conceded just 2 goals in 5 League games.

Fact: Blackburn Rovers have won their last 5 games at St James’ Park.

We dominated the last 35 minutes of that half, but one error = 2-1 instead of 2-0 or even 3-0 had Best put his header on frame.

Best and Ba have had great movement and ball control, Jonas didn't see the ball for a long time but started coming to life. Cabaye needs more touches, and Tiote needs to gain half a step.

It's been a long time since we were able to decisively beat the teams we were supposed to at home. 12 points in 6 games, best defensive record in the league (3 Clean sheets), Ba and Best are finding their stride, Obertan has looked threatening the last three matches, and Tiote isn't getting booked (how much do you think having Cabaye's pace as opposed to Nolan has helped that).

We're finding form and we're getting healthier (Guthrie, Ben Arfa, Marveaux, and Ferguson all got run outs mid-week, and Santon should be back either next week or after the international break). We've got 2 winnable League matches in October, Blackburn away in the Cup, and Tottenham at home after a week off.

(Sm22) I remember that link

Great start for the toon, had a good feeling that we would have won today. Hopefully with getting the players back like Ben Arfa and Santon then we will be stronger. Hopefully we can see Marveaux get a start as I think he will add something. We need to be getting maximum points against teams like these at home, and I do believe that our midfield is better than others who are expected to finish 7th down. If BA can get going and with the goals off Best then maybe we should be ok, as you would reckon that Cabaye and Ben Arfa will provide chances for them.

The toon seem to have some pace now to attack teams, and defensively we are looking good which has been the biggest thing for us, especially with the past of not being able to stop teams.

Well done lads

happy days (Sm60)

Re: Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Blackburn Rovers

Upon review, I maintain that Obertan should be dropped from the starting XI when everyone's healthy enough to start (I know, I know). Yesterday five NUFC midfielders:

Ben Arfa
Cabaye
Jonas
Marveaux
Tiote

...completed 186 of 214 passes = 86.9% = quality. Add Obertan and it's 216/258 = 83.7% = still good but there's a dip. He is an obvious candidate for impact sub. Even if we go with a 4-man midfield, I think he's the guy to drop to get HBA/Marv onto the pitch.

In news that makes us all happy, Colo and S. Taylor completed passes at a rate of 66/71 = 93% = (Sm128)

Simpson & Raylor let us down a bit, though they did put themselves about: 93 of 159 passes found a teammate or 58% = confused smiley

Let's hope young Santon can get into the lineup soon. This first team is looking great and could be dominant...

Another fantastic result. I've been buzzing all day because of it and hopefully we can maintain our good start. I thought Ba, Obertan and Coloccini were outstanding although Cabaye, Tiote and Best weren't far behind. Well done to Pardew and all the players, for the wonderful start to our season.

great result, mick martin was on talksport last night saying how we shouldn't get carried away because the fixtures have been kind to us and we should have been aiming to win every game we'd already played!

waffles-yeah, throws are included. That flatters both of them, as they were mainly successful with throws. Simpson was 11 of 13 for example.

I see Martin's point, mental-but f00k him. Should United not have been looking to win against Stoke? Twelve points from 6 matches is what it is, and that's handy going in the early season. It's a good time to pick up points off of teams that haven't gelled or whatever and we're taking advantage.

people just can't seem to give us credit, pundits are always going on about the start we make but then come our with some @#$%& like we've been lucky, fixtures have gone our way the opposition have under-performed! blackburn beat Arsenal a week ago and we totally dominated them yet we were lucky to be playing a poor team!

What they going to say if we beat a full strength Man Utd or Chelsea?

Don't worry about it mental. Because then you'll worry about what they'll say if we don't win those games.

Fully agree with you mental, typical people who are nobody's now trying to sl@g the club off, as they have nothing else to do. Pundits predicted at the start that we would get done over, yes it is early stages but we have shocked a few and in a position now which we won't be at the end of the season, but the way I look it is we are beating teams or getting results against teams fighting for the mid table position, bar Arsenal.

We got a point against Arsenal which nobody thought we would have. Went onto beating our rivals which was always going to be one of our hardest games due to it being a derby and it was also away from home. Beat Fulham who are better prepared than us, with all the games they had in pre season due to the Europa Cup, so would have had more match practice and also a bloody good team who have performed on a regular basis in the premiership. Drew with QPR, after all the investment they had and had players trying to prove a point, and ok we got out done throughout the game, but came away with a point which would never had happened last season. Drew against Villa who are looking a stronger outfit than they did last year and then beat Blackburn after they did Arsenal.

For me the club has done fantastic and should be given all the credit in the world, especially when you take into account the money spent/money sold, as we are looking up compared to a Arsenal who are looking down. At the end of the day you can only win/draw against what is in front of you. Maybe we haven't played the likes of Man U, Chelsea, City and Spurs, but then how many teams gets points against these anyway. Our big games of the season are against the teams that are predicted to finish 7th and below in the league

Of course you're right TTID-truth is, these pundits have been found out as their predictions are available for review and our lads have confounded them. Now they're doubling down, insisting that they must be right and hoping for us to hit the skids.

This sort of coverage for NUFC will never stop. The line "All is going pretty smoothly without a sign of controversy up on Tyneside" doesn't sell papers. It's best to ignore it.

Its right that we dont get carried away but I dont think anyone is. Im just so pleased to keep chipping away at the points with more and more players either coming back from injury or settling in.

As far as not playing anyone I would much rather be in our position than Bolton's who are at the other end of the scales having played most of the top teams. We have a cushion and will go into a tough November with some confidence. Bolton are as low as you can get and will have to come up against teams who smell blood.
