Harper On Leaving Toon For Brighton

Newcastle United goal-keeper Steve Harper has finally decided that he is no longer prepared to play second fiddle at the club as he moved to Brighton & Hove Albion yesterday in time for their game against West Ham United last night.
Harper went straight into the starting eleven but failed to keep a clean sheet and West Ham won the game 1-0.
He told the official Brighton website, that he was no longer prepared to sit around waiting for his turn on the pitch;
“It's a great stadium, with a great set of fans and a club that has just gone up, so it's going in the right direction. It's a long way to move from Newcastle but I didn't want to wait around for a club nearer to home.
The manager and goalkeeping coach also made it attractive. They are both highly recommended and the gaffer was first class on the phone when I spoke to him. Now I'm here it's time to get stuck in.
I don't want to sit and do nothing for the last few years of my career and I'm excited to be here. There are a lot of characters and we are going to need that to get away from this bad run."
Manager Gus Poyet said of the 1 month loan deal;
"Steve was available and with the huge amount of Premiership and Championship experience he has, we felt he would add something to the squad.
He will use that experience to help the defensive players and the goalkeepers, and help us get back to the defensive form we showed earlier in the season.
Of course, our fans will know all about Steve and his qualities. He is a top player and will bring a great deal of experience to the defence."

A good servant to NUFC. A good keeper but not as brilliant as some think.

Good luck to him and I dont blame him. He must have made this decision after seeing how well Krul has been.
For him I hope he makes it permanent. That would leave us with a problem though. Do we try and get Forster to stay for a season or two to try and push Krul.

I wish him nothing but the best. It's too bad it ended this way. Krul has to start, he's earned it, but I would feel much better with Harper behind him. Personally I would have waited until January and I still suspect that the club hierarchy want him gone. There's no way you're convincing me that Elliot is good enough for the top flight. That's a@#$%&shoot-at best from what we saw at Forest-and AP knows it.

I didn;t seen any news Monday and heard that Harper had failed to stop the goal in the game on the radio - was like wtf?

I watched the game due to him leaving, and he was to blame for the goal, really bad positioning bt it wasn't a bad finish by Nolan. I put the goal down to him being rusty and if he had time to settle in first I would imigane he would save that shot all the time.
Even though we are short, and I hope the toon have something up the sleeve, as on the looks of it our back up keeper isn't good enough, Forster has made it obvious he wants to play week in week out, which wont be the case with us, when he comes back.
I am pleased for Harper and if he makes it permenant then hopefully he will treated right and get to play every week, which I reckon he will as Brighton don't seem to have the budget to go and splash the cash around, and reckon it could be a great move for him

i dont think Pardew had ever planned for this to happen, i think Elliot was brought in as a young keeper who they thought would improve with good coaches and would be better as 3rd choice than Soderberg!
Question is will Forster be coming back to fight it out with Krul if Harper leaves permanently

I would rather have Forster back next season giving it a go but if he is going to have the lip on then maybe it is better if we sort of cash in now. It says he has a contract until summer 2014 but he would be old enough to walk away for nothing then.
If Harper moves on and we dont sign anyone I would want Forster to stay for at least a season then we would still get a fee with him having a year left.
Krul new contract though after Colo's.

Still a year or two early for Alnwick, I suppose. You can cast an eye toward clubs circling the drain but I don't see much potential. I guess this is pretty much it for Forster & Soderberg too. The latter is 21 and would be sniffing around the first team if he were going to make it. If they're not given a chance in the first team next season it's over for them here.
It's a backup keeper we're on about anyway so I'll agree with Biffins that getting Colo tied up has to be our top priority.

I agree, Forster should stay and try and fight for the position as well as offer cover, but then he does seem to be a pain in the @rse as he has previously said that he wants first team football and isn't bothered where it will be, so a signing will be needed, even if it is a old one who is happy to sit and collect wages, and come in if needed. Cudicini would be ideal, great cover and not bothered about playing
Colo's future need sorting soon, especially if all the Liverpool talk is true, mind if it is a case of rumours being right about Colo and Jonas going there, then the american owners might as well bought us, with already taking Enrique and Carroll

the Sun quoted Harper as saying he's ready to leave NUFC permanently as he's enjoying playing first team football which he hasn't done for 6 months!
If he has said this then he has gone down in my estimation, he was injured for the end of last season and most of the closed season and then Krul has been in amazing form so far this season so how can he expect to have played, on top of this how many years was he happy to sit on the bench when Given was number 1!

He deserves to play first team football and has every right to want to leave permanently, that doesn't make me think any less of him, he's sat on the bench for us for the best part of the last 15 years when he could maybe have played for England if he'd gone elsewhere.

so why suddenly decide he wants to play when his best years are behind him, your right, had he shown any sort of ambition throughout his career he would have been a top premier league GK and an england regular!

I agree with i! on this one. He's not demanding to start, he wants to be in the first team. To be dropped below Elliot would certainly be galling to me if I'd served this club like Harper has. And that's what happened. He couldn't even make the bench.

How can anybody have a go as he wants to leave, not many players stay at a club so long even if they were playing week in week out, which he hasn't. He has probably clicked that he hasn't got long left and wants to play football
Regarding him dropping down, that is utter b@llsh@t, as he is far better than that idiot on the bench, so he has obviously had a fall out so why not move
To me I have the utmost respect for the lad, gutted that he wants to leave but fully understand it
