Newcastle United have postponed tomorrow’s pre-match tribute to former midfielder Gary Speed, so that his wife can be in attendance. Louise Speed, who has received nationwide support after her husband’s tragic death will already be attending a tribute in Leeds tomorrow afternoon.
The club had organised for Welsh tenor, Gwyn Hughes, to sing “Bread of Heaven” ahead of a minute applause before kick-off, but that has now been rescheduled for 17th December 2011, the sides next home game.
Derek Llambias said;
"We have today received a request from Louise Speed to postpone the club's planned tribute to her husband Gary in order that she can join us at the stadium when our tribute takes place.
Louise has been very touched by the plans and expressed a desire to be present. As Louise will be at Elland Road tomorrow, on her request we have rescheduled our tribute and it will now take place at our next home game against Swansea on December 17.
A minute's applause for Gary will still take place before kick-off."
The minute’s applause will still go ahead, and the club have sectioned off an area at the ground to allow supporters to show their respects for the Wales Manager.
I think it is the best thing, and it will be really good if Gary gets a great send off by us and Leeds, and what a woman for being brave enough to do it
Yeah, and suppose with the match being against Swansea it will make it all the more Poignant. Bad thing I suppose it will get them right up for the game.
Be really good if you could publish some of the articles in the programme Carys for us and I could imigane it was a great read under the circumstances.
I thought the crowd were brilliant today and it must have been so hard for the players that knew him so well, and Carver was in a bad way which is understandable.
Well done to Leeds for their part and hopefully Mrs Speed can take some if any comfort from the way the football world has reacted
I hope you all don't mind but as we share a common grief/loss i thought i would post a brief clip of the send off we gave Gary today at Elland Road. It was a really emotional day for everyone but i feel Mrs Speed and family will take some comfort in the knowlege that Gary was truly loved. I know she will receive the same from you guys.
The Leeds thing was bizarre (the way you scored straight after the 11 minutes of chanting). Living in Nottingham I have a few Forest friends who were there and said it was incredible.
