Pardew To Read Up On Red Card Rules

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is set to read up on the rules after David Luiz got a yellow card for a his foul on Demba Ba in the 4th minute of the game. The defender was the last man in a clear goal scoring opportunity, yet referee Mike Dean failed to send him off. The early decision would have put a whole different swing on the game, had the ref shown a red card to the Argentine.
Pardew said;
"I thought he was going to get sent off. It was the fourth minute of the game but it doesn’t really matter when it happened. He was in on goal, he was behind Luiz and the goalkeeper wasn’t going to get to the ball.
Therefore it was a goal-scoring opportunity and he brought him down. I could not understand why he didn’t send him off. I was quite angry about it because if that happened at Old Trafford to one of my players they would have walked and I thought he would have walked.
If you have got a goal-scoring opportunity and the defender brings you down from behind you go off. There was no man covering so I don’t understand.
I am going to have to look at the rule book. It's a sending-off, it's as simple as that. It changed the game."
Whilst Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas seemingly admitted his lack of confidence ahead of the game, in his post match interview by suggesting that they didn't expect a win at St James' Park, he said;
"We have been treated unfairly for quite some time as well. Today, maybe the decision fell our way. So, it was his (the referee) decision, I have to respect it.
It is a win that nobody was expecting, so it is a big, massive win."
Mike Dean allegedly told Pardew that the offence was not a red card because Demba Ba did not have control of the ball. However the rules state;
A player is sent off and shown the red card if they commit any of the following seven offences;
- Serious foul play.
- Violent conduct, such as throwing a punch.
- Spitting at an opponent or another person.
- A player other than the goalkeeper denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball.
- Denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player's goal by an offence punishable by a free-kick or a penalty kick.
- Using offensive or insulting or abusive language and/or gestures.
- Receiving a second caution in the match.
A player is yellow carded if they commit any of the following offences;
- Anything that can be deemed as unsporting behaviour .
- Dissent by word or action.
- Persistent infringement of the laws, for example, a series of fouls.
- Delaying the restart of play.
- Not retreating the required distance at a free-kick or corner.
- Entering or re-entering the pitch without the referee's permission.
- Deliberately leaving the pitch without the referee's permission.
