Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Swansea City

By Tyne-Talk
December 16 2011

Newcastle United host this weekend on the back of three defeats, two wins and one draw from their last six games in all competitions, whilst Swansea travel on the back of two wins, two draws and two defeats from their last six.

Whilst Swansea have picked up just two points away from home this season, Newcastle’s flying start has hit the rocks with injuries stacking up and experienced figures being side-lined. Both were reflected in the Norwich game where the performance was poor in comparison to others this season.

The good news for Alan Pardew is that he will have Mike Williamson (ankle), Fabricio Coloccini (thigh) and Cheik Tiote (knee) assessed before the game, the bad news is it is unlikely that all three will return for this must win fixture.

Steven Taylor (Achilles) and Danny Guthrie (groin) are both certain to miss out whilst Dan Gosling is suspended for his red card against Norwich City last weekend.

Swansea manager Brendan Rogers will be relying on the amazing form of keeper Michel Vorm, whilst Joe Allen returns from suspension. However, away from home Blackburn are the only team to have conceded more goals.

Fact: Swansea have kept 7 clean sheets this season joint highest with Manchester United.

Fact: Yohan Cabaye will have to serve a one game suspension if he picks up a yellow card as it will be his fifth of the season.

We need a goal early in the second. If not, maybe AP should go for a change up front. We just need someone to finish. We've got 9 shots to their 1, but 6 were off target.

We have been playing very well so far, but without scoring, that doesnt really matter..

Hopefully a early goal from us in the second half..

Well that's two points lost, but there are actually some positives here as opposed to last week. Colo getting through a full match and Tiote coming close are huge. Seeing Williamson on the bench is also reassuring. And we actually played well from the stats and the 1st half highlights I've seen. But somebody-specifically somebody other than Ba-has to be able to finish. But what else can you say when you hit the post 3 times when you're up against one of the league's hottest keepers?

Oh, and Santon getting through another match is also great.

On the other hand: Kadar is clearly finished at NUFC. If he can't even get on the bench in this situation, he's done. Also: does Raylor have an injury? According to the beeb he wasn't even on the bench. Is that right?

Anyone know why Ryan taylor wasn't even on the bench?

According to the NUFC official site under the heading 'Santon: I love it here' Raylor has a 'minor ankle injury.

Totally agree pal and was going to write something similar. The doom merchants were out in force at the match which really p155es me off. I think Swansea have the most clean sheets in the league and came up here to park the bus.

We totally dominated the game and played pretty well with it but these things happen. The ref didnt give us the steam off his p155 and was very weak I thought.

But as Tunyc said, there are many positives to take. No further injuries as far as Im aware. Tiote and Colo back and a very good performance from Santon who really impressed me today.

Its a shame about Cabaye but I suppose I would rather him miss WBA at home especially as its reported that Morrison, Scharner and Mulumbu are all doubts. Im not sure who will play but with Tiote back and if those players are missing then maybe HBA can play the attacking mid role. If not It would be nice to see Vukic given another run out.

A few of the players looked a little off the pace, Cabaye included so maybe a game out will give him a nice rest before a winnable game against Bolton.

I would have taken a point before the game, as ok Colo and Tiote were back, but Tiote was always going to be a bit of the pace with being out for so long and obviously there could have been a risk had Colo pulled up

After conceding 4 goals it was important to keep a clean sheet and get the confidence back in the defence which hopefully this had
