Papiss Cisse - A 5.5 Year Deal & The No.9 Shirt For NUFC

Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Papiss Demba Cisse from Bundesliga side SC Freiburg for an "undisclosed fee". The Senegal striker has signed a five and half year contract for the club and will wear the number 9 shirt on his return from the African Cup of Nations, a tournament during which he can build on his partnership with International and now club team-mate, Demba Ba.

In his first interview as a Newcastle United striker, Cisse said;

"I would like to thank everybody for their welcome, and for inviting me to sign for the club.

It is an honour to play for such a big club and I am looking forward to it. I want to pay back the confidence the club have shown in me, and give the supporters something to be proud of.

I am aware of the huge importance of the number nine shirt, and when I spoke with the manager he made it very clear how important this shirt is. I will treat it with respect and I hope to do my very best in this shirt."

Manager Alan Pardew said of the deal:

"Ever since Andy Carroll left, Papiss was my first choice in the specific role he has at the end of the play.

He is a finisher with an already-established CV in the Bundesliga, where we have monitored him for the best part of two years.

Unfortunately he was out of reach, financially, for us in the summer, but it recently became apparent that Derek Llambias and Lee Charnley could do the deal in this window.

It has become obvious this season that the team and the club have done exceptionally well, and (owner) Mike Ashley has backed me to bring this player to the club. I would like to thank Mike, Derek and everyone involved for getting this deal over the line."

Don't want to be pessimistic but I hope this isn't because BA is leaving us.
BA deserves the number 9 more than this guy.
BA should have the number 9 and give Cisse another squad number.

Ba has said he wants number 19 its lucky to him for some secret reason he does not want to be no.9

Mint. Dunno whether to be suspicious or delighted that we've spent £10 million on one player.

That's ok then.
Can't wait to see both of them upfront for the Toon.
God forbid anything should happen to either of them or Tiote at the ACON.

Great signing and hopefully with him being Ba's international teammate they're meant to be a partnership. Though I do wonder if this means Best is available for the right fee. So I'm still gonna be on pins and needles until midnight on the 31st. And we do still need a defender. If we'd go out and get any of Tomkins, Ridgwell or Pieters we could make a bona fide push for Europe.

But again, great great signing!

Was thinking about Best myself Tunyc. To be honest, like Raylor and Guthrie (posted about these two on QPR ratings thread), I wouldnt be against him getting a new deal. He wont be on much but has shown to be a useful player and always puts a shift in.

I would like to think Loven and Ranger would be away at the end of the season and Xisco could be either sold or paid up (cringe at how much money has been lost on him). That would leave us with four strikers.

Saying that, along with Simpson, you could see us cashing in. Those two players cost us around 1.5 mill combined. You could see us getting 4-6 mill combined for these two even with them having only a year left.

We shall see.

Had heard a rumour that Simpsons contract dispute has taken a turn for the better and could possibly get good news on the situation soon if this is true and they can get colo signed id be delighted as I think having a settled back for has been the biggest factor in our success this season

i can see Colo signing in feb once he sees how commited the management are!

I can see us going with Ba and Cisse, HBA and Shola as our 4 main strikers with young prospects filling in but that would leave Shola as our only real target man so Best may be kept for this!

Stories about cissokho and pieters aren't going away so if either of these come in Santon will go to the right and simpson out the door!

Loven is leaving in the summer along with Smith and i very much doubt Xisco will be a NUFC player by the start of next season which will lighten the wage bill by about 100k!

Ranger will be sold if we can find a buyer!

Perch will be sold if we buy another defender and i think Willo will also go if another central defender comes in!

Note: AP says he doesn't like HBA out wide but does play him there while HBA playing at forward never comes up. I don't understand the enthusiasm for this. Just because he's a technically-skilled midfielder doesn't mean he's a forward. See: Duff, Damien.

I'd give Best a new deal especially if we can see Loven and Ranger out the door. We're stuck with Shola as nobody else will touch that contract. Perch won't be sold now as he's needed with Tiote away, Saylor injured and Cabaye possibly missing time.

Xisco and Smith I'm guessing will remain unsellable.

Good news if we can get Simmo signed, and hopefully it will be on to Colo's new deal from there.

I can't help but note PSG's continuing interest in Ba, though, and I'm going to wait for 1 February to evaluate the window.
