Newcastle United travel to White Hart Lane this evening for a 5.50pm kick off. Tottenham Hotspur host on the back of three wins, two draws and one defeat from their last six games in all competitions. Newcastle go into the game on the back of four wins and two defeats from their last six games.
Harry Redknapp returns to the dugout after a headline grabbing week, having being cleared of tax evasion and then put forward as the most likely candidate for England manager since Capello quit. The 64 year old has promised that his attention is on today’s game and nothing else as Spurs push for the title.
Tottenham are without Van Der Vaart, Sandro and William Gallas (all calf) and Tom Huddlestone (ankle), whilst Younes Kaboul (knee) and Ledley King will undergo a late fitness test.
Aaron Lennon and Jermaine Defoe both return from hamstring injuries.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has seen his luck turn in recent weeks with injuries to Ryan Taylor (swollen ankle) and Leon Best (medial ligament damage) both going off against Aston Villa last weekend, and joining Steven Taylor (Achilles), Sammy Ameobi (knee), Sylvain Marveaux (groin) and Nile Ranger (ankle) in the treatment room.
Cheik Tiote is still on International duty with the Ivory Coast, whilst Yohan Cabaye completes his 3 match suspension.
Papiss Cisse made his debut last weekend, slightly earlier than anticipated after replacing Leon Best and had the crowd on his side as he scored the winning goal. Today he is expected to start alongside Demba Ba.
Both sides are looking for three points from this game and will both be playing for a win. It’s set to be an interesting game.
Fact: Newcastle have won 6 times away from home at White Hart Lane, but Spurs have lost just 1 of their last 29 Premier League home games.
Fact: Newcastle have won 4 of their last 5 League games and kept 5 clean sheets in their last 9 League games.

Against Tottenham at home with the injuries they have and media coverage of recent times, go for the jugular.
Back line isn't really one to discuss - we seem to be down to our only choice.
Midfield, Guthrie has been doing well, I'd reward him with another start. I'm wondering whether with Enrique gone, perhaps it would be wise to get Jonas playing on the right - seems at the moment Simpson could do with the defensive help more than Santon, but either way I'd put Ben Arfa on the other wing.
Part of me wants to suggest Perch in the centre as well given he's impressed me the past couple of games, but I fear he'd be found out against Tottenham. But, for the same reasons as Guthrie, let him play. Worst case scenario we lose a game where we're underdogs, and he can be dropped for Cabaye the next game.

This is a game, where I have no expectations of getting a point, so we need to attack it, and hope for the best. A Sunderland draw keeps us in 5th no matter what, and Everton are currently up 1-0 over Chelsea. If both of those results happen, we have nothing to lose other than Goal Differential (which we are getting hammered in anyway) against Tottenham. If we lose 4-0, no big deal. If we snatch a win or a draw, all the better.

Sub out Obertan and Perch, both have been dreadful. Sub HBA in to Perch's position, switch Guti out to the right wing, and put Ferguson on the left. There haven't been any good feeds to our strikers, but horrendous defense coming from our right and ending on the top of the 18

Balls. Can't even argue with the scoreline as it stands, we've been second-best for the first half.
Still, even a loss here and we're within a point of 4th, with Cabaye returning and Tiote arriving back in the near future. Could be a lot worse at this point in the season...

We were poor, but f00k me. We were playing arguably the best team in the league, at home, after Harry got off at court and all the talk of the England job. Now we are pure sh17e, Guthrie and Williamson can f00k off and Ashley is a fat cnut. Last week everything is great. Get a grip man. I thought we were the best fans in the land.

The inability to keep the ball for more than two passes was pathetic and yes they were utter sh*te biffins but stop being so dramatic people have a right to be upset with that showing
They may arguably be the best side at the min but this is no exscuse
It was always a tough ask to get anything from this game but the way they rolled us over looked like they were playing a school team , the tactics were wrong and we were over run through the middle Guthrie is an ok stand in to cover injuries to either cabaye or tiote and perch can fill in there at a push but against decent sides they were found out yesterday
I'm not saying we would have won or got a draw with tiote and or cabaye in the side yesterday but I think we would have controlled the game more and score line would have been a lot better for our goal difference

It was hard to watch yesterday especially first half, but any team playing against tottenham yesterday would of been stuffed, everyone of their players had a stormer especially adebayor. I dont understand wh Williamson, Perch and Guthrie are getting so much stick when to be fair I thought our worst two plaers were Colo and Simpson by a mile. Guthrie was probably our best player. We just need to keep our chins up and move on to next game. Wqe are still 6th and only 1 point behind Chelsea and Arsenal, and still 9pts above the @#$%&.
It would be lovely to finish 4th but even me the most optimistic of fans would be well chuffed finishing 6th or even 7th so for now just let things roll. If we lose all our remaining games above teams who are currently above us we will still be doing alright. And this whole season has been a massive success already adn a huge step forward for us as a team and a club.

The entire team bar Ba & Cisse, who put in good effort with no service, and Krul was poor. Literally everyone. We were mistake prone and horrible in possession. We've actually played worse and gotten away with it this season. Individual mistakes cost us at least 3 of those goals. A depleted, tired, mistake-prone squad against a squad on an emotional high, very talented, on form, with a debutant wanting to prove something = a sound beating, which we got. Tottenham were better all over the pitch. Gosling couldn't even put in what looked a sitter of a consolation!
Let's not be so capricious. Guthrie has proven himself to be a useful player and he still deserves a new contract. Perch is what he is, a squad player. Whose squad players can cover Bale or Modric or Adebayor on form? Same with Williamson-likely 4th choice next season. Should Arsenal have dumped half their squad after being beaten 8-2 by the mancs? Or are they actually the team that beat Chelsea 5-3?
AP got the tactics wrong again too, which bothers me more than anything. Obertan needs dropping for HBA or Raylor. Cisse showed he can play wide-food for thought. I still think we need 5 in midfield to get the most out of this squad.

Tiote will be rather @#$%& after that final and he didnt play particularly well in it.
That's a bummer we could have done with him coming back on a high now he's just going to be tired and annoyed.
There have been times this season we've played worse and gotten away with it, our flaws have been there all along and Spurs have been the ones to really uncover them, but only about 2 3rds of the way thru, which is a huge bonus for us really.
IMO we were probably overdue a thrashing by one of the true top 4 contenders, which honestly, we are not to be counted among.
Sometimes I think with our small squad, we'd be lucky to finish in the top 10.
But we will finish in the top half and probably 7th or 8th, which is still punching above our weight imo.
It's been a great season, we've gotten quite a bit of luck but determination and some great team spirit has also played a big part.
5-0 is hard to take but we need to learn from it.
Anyway I think the wolves loss is a far worse result for them than this one was for us, so we need to beware of a backlash from them in the next game.

Lets not get carried away with the loss, yes it was bad and we were never in the game but as Biffins said with Harry's court case, linked to the England job and Spurs being the best football team in the premiership it was always going to be a loss, the spurs fans, players and gaffer were always going to be geared up and we hit unlucky that we got them after the week that Harry had.

Thing about Simpson is you can't just say "we can do better." I mean, sure we can but I don't think we're in the market for Maicon either. So who, specifically, would we get? I'd be just fine with getting Pieters for LB, moving Santon over and all but we'd still need cover.

7/8th has to be the goal now-improvement on last season and I can't assume we'll have any unduly barren run. Basically, we have 6 tough games (the derby, City away, CFC away, LFC at home, Arsenal away and Everton away) left and the@#$%&shoots of games against relegation candidates but 20 more points is very possible. That will put us in realistic contention for Europe.

I am not saying that we could draw a top quality right back, but we have got players of Cabaye, Tiote, BA and other players who are a far better standard, I am saying that he is one of the weak players in a full strength team and probably the other position would be right wing unless Marvaeux shows the potential he is capable of. I am not slagging of the players as I think they have done fantastic and would rather have our team than the likes of Villa who would be classed as a big club
Regarding europe, we would need more depth without the finicial gain of the Europa as you don't get a lot of cash, so as a fan you have to weigh up if it is worth it, yes great to have european football back at SJP, and if the club invested in a bigger squad, kept the players who are good enough and brought in similar quality then great, but if we had the same players without nobody added then you would say that we would be to thin in numbers

Honestly, I think based on our current total and position, 7th should still be the expectation, as Mackems shouldn't finish in 7th ahead of us. 5th should be the goal.

That was probably going to be the most difficult match of the season for us, and its over.
I was really dreading it before kick-off tbh.
Last time I was in London Dec 06 I went to WHL and saw us beat them 3-2, but that may as well have been decades ago because Spurs are real title contenders now and they play so aggressively.
It was really hard to watch us go down like that.
3-0 I would have been happy to accept but those 2 early goals just ended the game for us.
Simpson and Obertan just prove to me that Fergie doesn't let anyone leave Utd unless he knows something the rest of us don't. Basically, they're both a load of sh1te

Anyway-TTID: you say Cabaye, Tiote, Ba and I reply with Perch, Raylor and Obertan. We can't get ahead of ourselves. I'd rather see new faces in areas where there are gaping holes before we go replacing players who aren't worldbeaters but aren't a problem.
waffles-I would call 7/8th the baseline expectation. I look at the squads and our form head-to-head and I can't honesty say I expect us to finish ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool. It's possible-but I'd call that the absolute ceiling for us this year, not an expectation.

Tunyc I agree with you, that we are needing new faces and I am not getting ahead of myself, I picking out a couple of positions that need to be looked at in the summer, of which may not cost a lot of money if we got lucky again in signing players of Cabeye and Tiote standard for the sort of fee that we got them for.
I think the toon did a bit of a clear out and bring in some players who can compete. At the same time I over the moon with what the lads have done as we have rammed it down some of the media who slated us before the start of the season
