Newcastle United go to West Brom for this Sunday’s only Premier League game. They travel to The Hawthorns on the back to two wins, two draws and two defeats from their last six games in all competitions. West Brom host on the back of three solid wins against Chelsea, Sunderland and Wolves, one draw and two defeats from their last six.
Newcastle have conceded 11 goals in their last six games and scored 7, whilst West Brom have conceded 6 and scored 12 in their last six games.
Newcastle are without long term absentees, Steven Taylor (Achilles), Sylvain Marveaux (groin), Peter Lovenkrands (thigh), Leon Best (knee) and Sammy Ameobi (knee), but Pardew is still sweating on the fitness of Cheik Tiote (thigh) who has been given a 50% chance of playing, whilst Ryan Taylor (calf) remains unavailable. Shane Ferguson is likely to be named on the bench after a good week in training.
Nile Ranger, who was available for selection last weekend, having recovered from injury, has now been loaned out to Sheffield Wednesday for the rest of the season.
Roy Hodgson is expected to recall Jonas Olsson who was excluded last weekend through suspension and top scorer Peter Odemwingie (hamstring) is expected to start despite being a doubt earlier in the week. However, Zoltan Gere (knee) Graham Dorrans (hamstring) and Steven Reid (foot) remain absent.
Both sides will be looking to take advantage this weekend, with Liverpool tripping up in midweek against QPR, 3 points for Newcastle could maintain the gap between 6th and 7th given them a little more room to breathe. Chelsea also dropped points in midweek and depending on how they do this weekend, a win for Pardew’s side could see them go back into 5th.
West Brom go into the game in 13th but disappointing results for other teams could in theory see them go 8th as the middle of the table is so close. Alternatively defeat at home tomorrow and wins for rivals Aston Villa and Norwich could see them drop to 15th.
Fact: There have been 40 goals in 12 Premier League meetings between the two sides.
Fact: Newcastle are yet to win a league game this season where they have conceded the opening goal.

I'm not at all confident about us winning this match. West Brom beat us 3-2 at home in the reverse fixture.

Colo will be off at half, I'm guessing. No need to risk it. We shouldn't need him to finish this. I hope he doesn't miss time-that's the main thing.

I agree that HBA's shown more balance in his game today. He's also worked in our half. I like that from any player.

Concentration and confidence. I feel a bit sorry for him Carys. He's obviously out of his depth in this league but has to keep playing as we are so short of defenders.

Tunyc, I don't think we were ever in a 4-4-2 this game. Ba was wide left the entire game, rarely getting in the center, and Jonas was tucked in level with Guthrie. I think we were 4-3-3 from the beginning.

I don't disagree that we need another CB, TvA. Yanga-Mbiwa or Vertonghen would be a crucial signing if we can get either.

1st half was brilliant and I don't any team could have stopped us with the way we counter attacked, 2nd half we werent as good but was always going to be hard, when you are 3-0 to keep going.
HBA was man of the match and did a excellent job, and passed more than usual, which makes him a far better player, as he still has it in the locker to go on the runs.
Thought Perch played well, and if Colo was going to be fit then would put him in there instead of Williamson, as he was cr@p today, not only for the Brom goal, but other parts of the game. Looks like both will start against Liverpool now with Colo out for 2-3 weeks.

I know waffles-I'm not very articulate today. I figured he'd go to 4-4-2 with the substitution but it was Shola. Then, he did complete that switch when Ferguson entered.
The 4-3-3 worked brilliantly and put them on the back foot. They didn't expect it. Good call by AP, great win.
I'd like to get both of those guys, waffles but I can't see it. One or the other would be massive.
What's the word on Tiote? Will he be back next week?

Ben Arfa was fantastic and was deservedly man of the match!
Again i have to commend Jonas for his performance, he was playing in a role i've wanted to see him in for a long time now, was great going forward and protected the 2 inexperienced LB's and also suprisingly sat in front of the defence to protect them in the 2nd half which i thought guthrie might have been expected to do!

I thought the tactics were spot on against Brom, but can see us setting up differently against Liverpool, with Colo missing and us changing our left back regular I can see us setting up more defensively, especially as AP will know that as long as we don't lose then we are basically guaranteed the 6th spot at a minimum. It would leave us either 8 points to possibly 11 points clear of them, and with the lack of games left and Liverpool form we won't be caught.
Could see us playing a 4-5-1, and porviding the players are back can see us going for Krul, Simpson, Perch, Williamson, Raylor, Ben Arfa, Tiote, Guthrie, Cabaye, Jonas and BA

We should stick with the positive approach v LFC. They have real trouble scoring goals. If we get one early I think they'll panic and play poorly-like they did against Wigan.

As Pardew said the squad we have now is quite fluid and we have the players on the pitch who can play in different positions so we can change formation if necessary during the match!
We need to start the match like we did agains WBA so we should stick to the 4-3-3, liverpool wont be able to cope with the pace we attacked with on Sunday and if things aren't going well then we can switch to 4-4-2 or 4-5-1!

I would like us to set up how we did against Brom, but can see AP changing it, I doubt he will get caught up with Liverpools form as they have quite a good record against us, and think he will it that by pumping the midfield full of men, will stop them scoring

The one when Cisse was played through against Norwich and a few times (from the bits of the match I was able to watch) against WBA. With the front three feeding off those types of balls from Jonas and Cabaye, it can only be a good thing.

Over the years i dont think any toon fan hasn't complained at some point about Jonas' crossing but the last 2-3 games when he's been playing centrally his forward passes have at times been amazing! He was asked to play a more defensive role against WBA but now Tiote is back it would be great to see him allowed to play alongside Cabaye playing those defence splitting passes which they both have been successfull with and letting Tiote sit behind them and protect the defence!
I always worried about playing 4-3-3 because of how exposed our fullbacks could have been but jonas and cabaye have shown they are disciplined enough to cover them and Ba i'm shocked to say it HBA defended a lot more than i expected them to on sunday

I don't think you need any particular tactical setup to stop LFC scoring. If you contain Suarez, that's it. They average 1.2 goals a match this season.
Completely agree with you guys about Jonas. He's been doing that since he came. I've never complained much about his crossing because he's right-footed and has played almost exclusively on the left.

Thats has always been Jonas problem the crossing and lack of goals, but I would like to see Jonas getting a run in midfield to see what he can do, as his work rate is second to none. At this stage of the season, it is worth trying things out as it may give us extra options next year
