Taylor Open To Olympic Call Up

Ryan Taylor has said he would be interested in a place in team GB, managed by Stuart Pearce in the Summer Olympics. The defender has also confirmed he has received a letter from Pearce about the competition, which if selected could see him line up against David Beckham, who has promoted the competition from the early stages.
Taylor said;
“I got a letter from Stuart Pearce saying I was in some sort of squad. I am open to it. If anybody turned down the chance to play for your country on home soil in the Olympics they would be stupid. But it’s not my decision.”
The final decision would be down to Manager Alan Pardew, who would have to release Taylor for three group games, which clash with pre-season friendlies
He added;
“If Stuart Pearce is the manager then it’s between him and the club. As I say, I’m always available. There are only a number of players eligible over the age of 23.
I would always put my name in the hat. I’m available if selected.”

It totally wipes pre-season out for any player participating and they could get injured (which they could do in friendlies anyway).
On the flipside for some of these players it will be their only opportunity to play on the International stage (made way by current internationals being prohibited from playing) and they will maintain their fitness....

You only get 3 23+ players, and most of those will be playing in Euro 2012. I think this is an acknowledgement of 3 things: he's had a good season but will likely never make the England team, he's versatile enough to use on a small squad in a tournament, and the lack of quality full backs in England/Scotland (especially Left Backs).
I still don't get the point of Olympic soccer. Does it really mean anything?

Olympic Soccer is a waste, especially due to is timing. If it was 1 year earlier/later than it wouldn't interfere with the major tournaments. Essentially, it's just a glorified youth championship, that's great for scouts and national teams to get some fringe players a couple games.
