Newcastle United host Stoke City this weekend on the back of five consecutive wins and just one defeat from their last six games. Stoke travel on the back of one win, two draws and three defeats from their last six games. Newcastle are looking to secure a fourth place finish, whilst Stoke are seeking to push into the top 10 with just 1 point separating 9th from 14th in the League.
Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew will be pleased to have several players back from injury, but continues to be without, Steven Taylor (Achilles), Peter Lovenkrands (thigh), Haris Vuckic (knock) and Sammy Ameobi (knee).
Cheik Tiote (hamstring) is set to return to the starting line-up, whilst James Perch (thigh), Danny Guthrie (calf) and Leon Best (knee) all face late fitness tests ahead of the game. Gabriel Obertan (knock) could also be fit to start on the bench after being sidelined for several games.
There was good news for Sylvain Marveaux (groin) this week after he returned to training, but this game comes far to soon for the French midfielder.
Stoke City manager, Tony Pulis, is without Jermaine Pennant who is suffering with an illness, Salif Diao (knee) and Mamady Sidibe (knee) but Andy Wilkinson should return to the bench having recovered from a groin injury.
Fact: Papiss Cisse has scored 10 goals in 678 minutes of league action since he signed for Newcastle United.
Fact: Stoke haven’t won in their last 7 League games away from home and they are the lowest scorers in the league with only 32 goals from 33 matches.

Heres hoping the break doesn't have a negative effect on us and we are wide awake for this game, rather than sluggish and lacking in concentration as is often the way when we haven't played for a while

I notice though that Stoke have only conceded 3 more goals than us. Makes me wonder how much higher up the table we would be with a decent defence.

Games like this always make me nervous, but the lads have been proving me wrong all season so here's hoping the trend continues!

So that's 6 games straight won, 5 of which we kept a clean sheet with an average goals scored per game of 2.16.
Some might say the opposition has been fairly weak, but it's still a decent run.
Hopefully Barton can do us a favour now!

If we lose all of our remaining games, and Everton win all of theirs and make up the goal difference they can finish ahead of us. As soon as they drop points or we pick up one more, it's official.
(I think. It's still not perfectly clear to me what happens if Chelsea win the CL. I'm hoping we finish 5th or higher and make that moot.)

Not quite in our own hands. We still need Chelsea out of the Champions' League, as we are 3 points behind Arsenal and well behind on GD.
Regardless, win out and we're 4th at worst, if Arsenal drop a single point we take 3rd with 12 more points.

Bloody fantastic result, and the goals were well taken and I am starting to get nervous but excited where we are sitting now, but the remaining games will be hard. Wigan is probably the hardest of the bottom teams as they are so unpredicatable. I think if we can get the 3 points off Wigan then it could be on, but it will be interesting to see how the players can handle the pressure now as up until now we have been chasing where we are in the driving seat.
