Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has confirmed that Cheik Tiote is a major doubt ahead of next weekend’s opening game of the season against Tottenham Hotspurs. Tiote picked up a calf injury in the 4-1 defeat against Cardiff yesterday afternoon, in the clubs final friendly of pre-season.
Pardew said of the Ivory Coast International;
“Cheik has a calf strain so we will have to monitor him. We are sweating on him for next Saturday. Cheik looks ten times better than he did last year, and I absolutely mean that.
He did not come back well last summer, if I am honest. However, he has summered well this time and is in great physical shape.
It is going to be a big season for Cheik. All my, what I would call big players, are important if we are to progress as a team, and Cheik fails into that category. He is in a good place."
Captain Fabricio Coloccini also picked up a knock and Pardew has confirmed that the Argentinian is expected on International duty this week but will now be assessed ahead of that.
