Europa: Match Preview/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Atromitos

Newcastle United host Greek side Atromitos at St James Park tomorrow evening in the second leg of the Europa League qualifying tie. Alan Pardews’s side go into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw in Greece last week, but he will be hoping the side haven’t had their confidence knocked after a 2-0 defeat against Chelsea at the weekend.

Pardew made nine changes to last Thursday’s line up, with just Papiss Cisse and James Perch being called up from the team which started the Premier League season. It is expected that he will revert back to the same or similar team, perhaps resting Cisse after he also played at the weekend.

Cheik Tiote (calf), Sammy Ameobi (knee) and Shola Ameobi (hamstring) remain side-lined through injury, but Dan Gosling is fit.

Newcastle go into the game with a slight advantage thanks to Ryan Taylor’s away goal, but

The draw for the main competition is on Friday.

KO Thursday 30th August 2012 8pm

Just missed the goal.

Well done Vuckic

Very lucky Gevinho has just been booked for diving!

Because it should have been a penalty!

Why doesn't Obertan play like this all the time. He's like a different man.

We are going to concede a goal if we are not careful. They are pushing for one.

I never thought I'd ever say this but Obertan has been the man of the match for me. He even tracked back a lot to help the defence.

More of the same please. (Sm152)

Was enough - though a little worried about the likes of Ba and Colo playing a full 90 minutes ahead of the weekend.

Perch impressed me again. Not in a stand-out, amazing performance way, but while he was on he didn't seem to make too many mistakes despite being moved around everywhere.

Bigirimana I was glad to see play the full game. Still got a way to go, but he put in a solid performance today.

Obertan however...whether it was the shaky defence or the competition for the first team, he looked threatening and never stopped running. His crosses weren't great, but he was attempting them - grabbing us a few corners at least, and making his cuts inside more difficult to predict.

Shame he'll be too knackered to play a part in the Villa game!

....but he will have the International break to recover

I thought we did canny last night, good to see Obertan, Marveux and Vuckic all put good shifts in. Ba and Perch also both played very well.

I thought we road our luck on occassions especially with the pen claims, colo's not so much but thats football.

Best performance i can remember from Obertan and Gosling, they are obviously listening to Pardew's challenge to take the opportunity!

Obertan put quite a few good crosses into the box and was a threat throughout the more advanced role obviously suits him!

We made hard work against a very poor side, even though we could have been 4 or 5 up, we could also have been a man down and they could have had a penalty.

I do think though that Newcastle will do better against the better teams in the competition.
