Newcastle United midfielder Cheik Tiote has been red carded for a challenge on Steven Fletcher in the 25th minute of the game against Sunderland. The Ivory Coast International, who was being pulled back by Jack Colback prior to the incident, went for the ball but caught Fletcher instead. The sending off is Tiote's 1st red card, despite having picked up 27 yellows in 54 games and has angered fans. Immediately after he left the field Newcastle were awarded the free kick.

Shola Ameobi was also booked in the aftermath, for dissent, after he waded in and told referee, Martin Atkinson exactly what he thought of the situation.

Newcastle are now 1-0 up after a goal in the 3rd minute from Yohan Cabaye and a man down.

Sunderland are yet to see a card despite Larsson kicking Shola Ameobi in the chest.
