Player Profile: Mathieu Debuchy - In Newcastle For Talks

Mathieu Debuchy has arrived in Newcastle to confirm the terms of his move to the North East. The 27 year old has been a target of manager Alan Pardew for a while now, with both an initial bid and an improved bid for the player rejected last summer by Lille President Michel Seydoux who said it was his “duty”. 

Debuchy has made it clear he wishes to join former team mate Yohan Cabaye at the club and it is understood that Newcastle have agreed to double his wages, whilst full terms and conditions were negotiated with the player last summer.

The bid which is on the table is €7million (£5.6million).

Last summer Yohan Cabaye confirmed Debuchy’s intention to join Newcastle. He said;

“Mathieu has made a very difficult to decision to leave Lille, but he has made the decision. Now I hope Newcastle push for Mathieu and I want them to do the deal.

I spoke with him two days ago and he told me he wants to come. I hope Derek (Llambias) and Mike Ashley will do the business now.

He wants to play for Newcastle and I hope that he comes to Newcastle because, of course, he is my friend, but also a very good player for Newcastle."

Debuchy is expected to be in the stands for this evening’s game against Everton. With a medical due to take place this signing could be announced by the end of the week.
