Newcastle United have confirmed that they have signed Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa on a five and a half year deal for approximately £7million. The 23 year old will wear the number 13 shirt. The club broke the news several hours after Montpellier confirmed that their captain had passed a medical at Newcastle and was no longer their player.

He said of the deal;

"It is an honour to be able to come to Newcastle United and have the chance to play in the Premier League.

Newcastle are one of the biggest clubs in the league, and I'm going to try and give everything I have so that the team can do well.

I have experienced a lot of positive things so far in my career and one of those is joining this club."

Manage Alan Pardew added;

"We needed to strengthen the team and bringing in Mapou will give the whole squad a boost. He is precisely the sort of player we've been looking to bring to the club.

He is a good age for us but has plenty of experience at club and international level.

Mapou is a talented footballer, good in the air and on the ground and has all the attributes to succeed as a quality defender in the Premier League.

He's a good character too and that will be important for us over the next few months."

Yanga-Mbiwa is the second signing for the club in this window after Mathieu Debuchy signed earlier this month.

Great signing, hopefully two more will complete tomorrow then there are various reports that Sissoko will complete before the end of January too which would be a massive step forward for us imo.

Nice to see the club eventually getting their finger out and trying all they can to get us out of this mess.

Nice to see someone through the doors too. If we can get Gouffran and sissoko in too that would be great.

Sissoko I reckon will be a tough ask this window.

If he doesn't agree this window, then he'll be on the radar of almost all of the top division European clubs come the Summer.

We'd have to bid above his value to bring him in early; or compete with a large number of other suitors (which will drive up his wages, signing-on fee, etc.). It may take a bid of £6m.

If we can get a pre-contract signed and sealed; great. If we can bring him in sooner; so much the better, but I reckon Ashley and Llambias will try and gamble on getting him to agree the pre-contract.

On the Chronicle website it seems to suggest he will be arriving sooner rather than later. I shall keep my fingers crossed on that one though.

I'm feeling a lot more positive today with Gouffran and Haidara close. It begs the question why didn't we do any of this in the summer? Hopefully we can keep Colo to play alongside this fella.

The fat controller thought we would just carry on like we did last season, not realising we got lucky with injuries and suspensions last season, at least he's learnt his lesson!

Its all very well and good but how are we going to come up with a chant?

I mean what rhymes with Yanga-Mbiwa?

Really they simply don't think things through.

I've heard fans just refer to him as mapou but that will still be a hard one for a chant!
