Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Tottenham v Newcastle Utd

By Tyne-Talk
February 8 2013

Newcastle United travel to White Hart Lane tomorrow for the lunchtime kick off against Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs host on the back of two wins, three draws and a defeat from their last six games in all competitions, whilst Newcastle travel on the back of two consecutive wins against Chelsea and Aston Villa, three defeats and a draw against Norwich City.

Spurs will be without Jermaine Defoe, after he picked up an ankle injury last weekend against West Brom which also meant he missed out in midweek against Brazil. Emmanuel Adebayor could replace him, however he has only just returned from the African Cup of Nations and could face a fitness test.

Spurs are also without Younes Kaboul who is out until the end of February with a knee injury.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has one of his strongest sides of the season available to him after several January signings and very few players unavailable through injury. However, Danny Simpson (broken toe) remains absent, as does Hatem Ben Arfa who was expected back from a hamstring problem, only to pick up a virus which has pushed back  his recovery date.

Cheik Tiote returns from the African Cup of Nations.

A win for Newcastle could see them go up to 12th (11th is unlikely unless they score 4 or more and don’t concede) for a short while, whilst Spurs are chasing 3rd place in the League at least until the 3pm kick offs.

Newcastle will benefit from Fulham playing Norwich, the two sides immediately above them, whilst 12th place Sunderland face 6th place Arsenal. A win for Newcastle, a draw at Carrow Road and a defeat for Sunderland at The Stadium of Light will see Newcastle in 12th by the end of the day.

Pardew’s side played with determination for much of their game against Chelsea in midweek and just when everyone thought it was all over they scored in the 90th minute to take all three points. Fans will be hoping that they can keep the winning momentum after two consecutive wins, their first this season.

Fact: Spurs have lost just 1 of their last 13 League games.

Fact: Newcastle have conceded 18 goals in their last 7 games

#nufc still trailing 1-0. On a brighter note, we were 3-0 down in the corresponding fixture after 20 minutes, #thfc

I must admit I'm enjoying watching us going forward these days, but still hold my breath and tense up every time we have to defend!

FFS How difficult would it be to place a man, where he could get the ball when it goes straight past our players in the box.
Nothing annoys me more than the waste of these corners.(Sm31)

Also it was a good corner and whilst Cabaye takes breathtaking free kicks.....he can sometimes be less impressive from the corner flag

Probably the better side in the first half there, after a rocky start.

I think Sissoko used up too much of his magic last week, hasn't been sharp today. (I blame the French national team)

I thought we played quite well but two defensive mistakes and the magic of Bale have done us. Good results elsewhere for us Wigan,Reading and QPR all lost so that makes the result easier to come to terms with.Still disappointed that we didn't get a draw I think we deserved at least that.

take bale out of the equation and we were the better team, a draw would have been a fair result but can't be too downhearted if someone had said before the villa game we would get 6 points from the next 3 games I would have been delighted!
